I was puffing on the objective pipe earlier today, and I noticed something interesting. Somewhere in the last two years. Bruce Chen turned himself into a solid MLB starter. He’s not necessarily someone you want at the front of your rotation, but he’s given the Royals 234 innings of 4.47 RA, 4.16 ERA, 4.75 FIP, 98 ERA+, 1.395 WHIP. That may not seem like much, but there are teams that are paying $33M for two years/340 innings of 5.37 RA, 4.97 ERA, 4.88 FIP, 86 ERA+, 1.452 WHIP.
So Chen should be a wealthy man this offseason. Either that, or the team that’s paying $33M for two years of worse than Chen pitching should reconsider how they spend their money.
