Yonder Alonso supplied the late fireworks to help kick off Players Weekend, crushing a go-ahead homer off Aroldis Chapman as the Mariners celebrated a 2-1, 11-inning victory over the Yankees on Friday evening at Yankee Stadium.
Alonso’s two-out blast off the left-hander’s 100.1-mph heater landed on the right side of Monument Park, restoring a Seattle lead that was erased when Didi Gregorius’ eighth-inning single was misplayed by center fielder Guillermo Heredia, allowing Aaron Judge to race home all the way from first base.
As a favor to our readers, I’ve omitted the nicknames that they worked into the recap.
Well, THAT was an awful loss. This team really knows how to have really shitty losses. The Mariners are now 4 back in the Wild Card, so a couple more losses and this Wild Card race could get way too close for comfort.
Good job by CC. Terrible job by the offense.
Hopefully Austin Romine will begin serving his suspension tomorrow and then Sanchez can take off just the Cleveland series.
