Yes Network: Pettitte, Teixeira to play for U.S. WBC team

New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte and first baseman Mark Teixeira will compete for the United States this March at the World Baseball Classic, according to a report from CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman. Pettitte will be reunited with Team USA manager Joe Torre, who piloted Pettitte with the Yankees from 1996 to 2003 and again in 2007.

Maybe the early start will help Teixeira, but I’m not particularly happy to see Pettitte pitching in what are essentially meaningless exhibition games given his age and his inability to stay healthy in 2010 and 2012.  Add in Joe Torre who’ll probably make Pettitte throw 130 pitches a start and you have a recipe for disaster looming.

I am astonished that Pettitte is participating. It makes very little sense.

I’m fine with Teix going, though. Maybe he can use up his early season woes in the WBC and be hot to start 2013.

I’m astonished they want Pettitte.

Who cares. Tex is still probably going to OPS < .800 this year.

Teix is there for defense.

I just hope Mo doesn’t decide he wants to pitch for Panama.

It’s time for the WBC AGAIN???

I wish Jeter could have played. The last 2 times they did it he had MVP-level seasons (‘06 and ‘09).

I’m astonished they want Pettitte.

Have you seen the rotation? Pettitte might actually be the ace of the staff!

It’s Vogelsong, Dickey and Pettitte at the moment (Verlander might join later).

The lineup is fairly disappointing:

C Mauer/Lucroy
1B Teix
2B Phillips
SS Rollins
3B Wright
LF Victorino
CF Adam Jones
RF Stanton
DH Braun

Obviously this is a great lineup, but not as far as All-Star lineups go.
