Yankees vs. Red Sox, Monday March 14, 2011 **Spring Training Complaint Thread**

What to watch for: Manny Banuelos starts in place of Sergio Mitre (oblique) and will be followed by Dellin Betances, Romulo Sanchez, Mark Prior and Luis Ayala. Pitching for the Red Sox is ex-Yankee Alfredo Aceves.

Tune in to watch Manny Banuelos get schooled by the best team in the history of MLB.

Mexicano a Mexicano.

Shit is getting REAL!

BTW this is the lineup Banuelos will be facing:

Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Dustin Pedroia 2B
Carl Crawford LF
Kevin Youkilis 3B
Adrian Gonzalez 1B
David Ortiz DH
Mike Cameron RF
Jarrod Saltalamacchia C
Marco Scutaro SS

Are you sure?  I just got twittered the following Boston Lineup:

Earle Combs, CF
Mark Koenig, SS
Babe Ruth, RF
Lou Gehrig, 1B
Bob Meusel, LF
Tony Lazzeri, 2B
Joe Dugan, 3B
Pat Collins, C
Waite Hoyt, P

[4] I’ve needed a good laugh today.

On tap for me this evening: mlbtv and Tuborg-fueled midnight Banuelos!

[4]
Phew!  The line-up in [3] had me scared for a minute there.

Mark Koenig followed up his 1926 wRC+ of 80 with a big jump to 83 in 1927.  I wonder how many more runs that team would have scored with say Lazzeri batting second.  And no bunts.

The espNESN3 pic for the game is Jeter rounding the bases in a fashion that indicates he isn’t just running out a GB to SS then turning back trotting to the dugout. Nice subtle jab there with the pre-2010 pic.

[8] Or if that fellow in the 3 spot wasn’t on Joba’s diet and exercise regiment.

[10]
Ted is in mid-season complaint form, at the very least.

Jeter and ARod not at the game. In Jeter’s honor, Gardner grounds out to 2B to start the game.

[12] On the first pitch?  Doesn’t count past three pitches.

It was the 4th pitch, I think. Anyways, anyone know why they non-tendered Aceves but kept Mitre around?

I can’t bring myself to dislike Ace. I wonder if boston schooled us on that one, it’s not like they’re some dumb organization that can’t read medical records.

Monstero is huge back there. Jacob Ellsbur has had a good AB.

The Jesus and Pederoia are the same height. Jesus is squatting.

These games remind me just how much I dislike the Red Sox.

Yeah…Montero’s a pretty big kid.

Manny pitching very carefully to the ‘27 Yankees.

I can’t really see Montero having much trouble blocking balls in the dirt. He is just so frickin’ huge that balls will bounce into him.

Banuelos should win the 5th starter job just for getting through an inning against that lineup without giving up a run.
/Gammo’d

I’m rooting for Chavez.  I always liked him and was bummed out by his injuries.

He’s an angry elf.

I believe we have found our new BattleCat.

[24] I was about to post the same thing.

@#$%$#@ ESPN isn’t ahowing the game on my cable provider. could someone briefly describe how Manny B. looks - velocity, poise?

Nice opposite field stroke by the Jesus.

[27] I have the game on NESN.  According to the NESN gun, ManBan’s fastball has been at 92-94.  He also is throwing the change around 80-81.  Has anyone seen another pitch from Banuelos?  A curve?  I haven’t.

I really dislike the Sox.

Gardy drives in the game’s first run.

I took a screen grab of the last time the Yankees led against the best team in the history of sport.

[30] You know, however, that we are DOOMED.

[28], thank you.

AdGon says he is going to try not to dive this year to protect his shoulder. I don’t think Sawx fans will like that lack of grit.

I wish we hadn’t given up on Ace.

AdGon says he is going to try not to dive this year to protect his shoulder. I don’t think Sawx fans will like that lack of grit.

Perhaps Jeter should direct his wormburners in his direction when they play each other.

Only Big Papsmear has hit the ball solid off Banuelitos so far.

I wish we hadn’t given up on Ace.

Penny-wise and pound-foolish comes to mind.  They dicked around with Damaso Marte and ended up paying him about $1 million per pitch, then they non-tender Aceves so they don’t have to pay him like $500K?  He sure doesn’t seem unhealthy to me.

I guess what I’m saying is I agree.

[35] Jeter’s 4-year contract provides that he hit solely first-pitch wormburners to short.

Nice change to K Jewkilis.

That was the best pitch so far from Banuelos…lovely change to K Youk…and apparently his last pitch.

I missed the first 2 innings. But Banuelos looked good in the 3rd. Looked like he was trying to be a bit fine on the edge of the strike zone.

That change of his has some nice downward movement on it. Hitters didn’t seem to be able to square up on his fastball. Good stuff. Like how he joked with Girardi that he wanted to get the next guy when Girardi came out to remove him due to pitch count.

[40] That’s how he walked three in the first two innings. Got ahead, tried to get too fine. Even with hitters on, he still seemed in control of the situations though. Basically, watching him pitch, I have the opposite feeling I have when watching AJ Burnett pitch.

[41] Agreed, he looked good and kept his cool when the Sox got a couple runners on.  Did anyone see ManBan throw anything beside the change and FB?

Dennis Reyes has the body Joba is hoping to achieve.

[43] I didn’t.

More importantly, The Navi Grand Slam Express is in the game!!!!

[44] haha!

tedbrogen is killin me

[38] Still not fond of this nickname.

Ronnie Belliard is a bit Joba lite himself.

[48] Seconded

Think San Diego will give up CGOATK for Banuelos and Montero?

[53] Who is CGOATK?

Papelbon gets away with a hanging splitter.

[55] He got a gift of a strike call to Montero, too…just before Jesus missed one by a bit as well, absolutely crushing it foul.  I don’t want to say he’s toast…but is he?

[57] He shouldn’t be closing.  Bard or Jenks should.  The odds are small that he returns to the Sox after his contract expires this year.

Betances just a tad wild.

I hope Kalish makes the 25 man roster…..

Weird double play.  Thanks to Kalish for Jorge-like baserunning.

Betances WPs the run home, averting a Nava grand slam.

[63]
I resent that.

[63] Why do you resent yourself?

Joba Jenks into the game.  He looks like a cast member of ____________.  Fill in the blank.

[48] Third.  (Usually Malhell can do no wrong with me.  Not there.)

Alright already, point taken.

Though one would think that as a member of the tribe I would be permitted the ironic usage.

Blazing speed to beat out the bunt

You play for Cleveland Mel?  What’s Pronk really like?

Pronk has the intelligence of a small soap dish.  But at least he’s a free man.

I think the question we need to ask is, why is Youkilis pretending to be Lithuanian?

[52] That must be the first time in my time of using the internet that an angelfire site actually loaded.  I assumed it was some shitty hosting thing from the early days of the web that had surely by now gone out of business due to crappy service.

Did Betances get DFA’d yet?

Betances and Brackman for Blanton

This thread began with a bang and ended with a whimper.

T.S. Elliot Maddox

I would like to complain about all the complaining having stopped.

Joba Jenks into the game.  He looks like a cast member of ____________.  Fill in the blank.

Done.

Earle Combs, CF
Mark Koenig, SS
Babe Ruth, RF
Lou Gehrig, 1B
Bob Meusel, LF
Tony Lazzeri, 2B
Joe Dugan, 3B
Pat Collins, C
Waite Hoyt, P

Whew, for a moment I thought it’s

Willy Mays CF
Lou Gehrig 1B
Babe Ruth DH
Barry Bonds RF
Hank Aaron LF
George Brett 3B
Honus Wagner SS
Roger Hornsby 2B
Mike Piazza C

Oh you wanted to complain? This is getting hit over the head lessons.

[77] Put Johnny Bench in as a catcher. They may be asked to play some defense, even though Teh Best Team Evah!™ might consider that insulting.

[66] In private discourse, sure - well, I wouldn’t write this myself except to a landsman who knew me very well, and I still wouldn’t because, well, it’s not even funny.  Here in public, unless you can bribe SG into putting a little symbol by your name indicating proud ironically self-mocking Jew (maybe a rakish yarmulke with a propeller?), I’d steer clear.

In the process of buying this on a whim, I came across this awful or amusing image.

[81] Are those the actual Sox socks ? I mean the official rendering ? ‘cause the socks don’t match. I can’t think of anything pithy to base on that, but it’s three hours later somewhere…

Also, bet the model’s name is “Sully”.

On Ace, I think the problem was with dates.  He got hurt pretty bad in his accident.  They had a date where they needed to DFA him or renew his contract (or offer arb, but I don’t know if he was eligible).  On that date, they didn’t know if he would be healthy enough to start the season, and you can’t put someone on the 60-day DL until the season starts.  And they wanted that 40-man roster spot available.  By the time they felt he was healthy enough to pitch, 40-man was full, so they offered him an MiL deal, which he rejected.

It’s unfortunate that it happened, but I don’t know if there were too many other options.
