The White Sox are still probably favorites to win their division, but if they don’t the wild card implications for this game could be huge.  The Yankees are not going to win the AL East, but they have a slight chance at capturing the second wild card and if they get exceedingly lucky and everyone else falters they could even sneak into the first wild card spot.

The Yankees have gone 2-3 against the White Sox this year with two games vs. them remaining, so losing tonight clinches the season series for Chicago.  That may end up being a tie-breaker if the White Sox are the other wild card and finish with the same record, which means the location of the play-in game could very well be determined by the results of tonight’s game.

If only Ivan Nova wasn’t pitching.  I’ve given up on my belief that he’s been unlucky for large parts of this season.  The fact is, no pitcher in the AL has allowed more extra-base hits this year, and I can’t just hand wave that away anymore.

Jeter! Can’t GIDP when you leadoff.

That’s a decent start.

Who’s the guy wearing No. 2, and what has he done with Jeter?

WO Arod maybe Jeter should hit 3rd vs lefties

Dammit, Jetes, trying to make the loss more painful.

“There if goes, ” effing Serling.

There won’t be another base runner after this inning, so they better score more runs.

K coming?

productive out!

I can’t believe they scored there.

Youkilis shaking his ass.. just asking to be hit.

They work on that in spring training

That was lucky for Nova.

Way to work that pitch count.

Just witnessed Trumbo hit a ball all the way to Cambridge.

I’m inclined to believe that particular XBH wasn’t Nova’s fault. Ibanez-level defense by Swish there - a good play probably holds Rios to a single.

I guess Anaheim has transferred their “lay down” ways from Boston to Tampa Bay. Whichever fucks the Yankees over the most, I guess.

That was a pretty good throw by Jones…

Tampa Bay is just toying with us.

Glad our lefties hit lefties so well.  Liriano like Lester experiencing a renaissance vs us.

Welp, can’t blame Swisher for that XBH

[16] Oh, *that’s* why my window is broken this time…

In all seriousness, what are the odds that both the Yankees win and the Rays lose?

I say a 1 in 4 chance.

Is my estimate too high or too low?

We had our chance in the 1st but our lefties failed.  When did wolf turn into the Taco Bell Chihuahua vs lefties?

Deadspin ran a Q&A with an anonymous PR rep. Two good ones:

“is josh beckett as big of asshole as he seems to be?”
“Yes”

and

“Best athlete feud we don’t know about?”
“Yankee players and Nick Swisher?”

[26] The second one went right over my head, especially as to how it defines ‘best’.

Andruw Jones with a .729 OPS against lefties.

Come on, Billy Butler you son of a bitch.

Phil Hughes second on the extra base hits allowed list.  Of course.

Nova is going tio the minors after this start.

ugh. super nova.

[27] I imagine in that context it means “active” and “vitriolic.”

somebody kill me pleaseeeeee

Suddenly, the Joba plan doesn’t seem so ridiculous.

Is it fair to say that Nova gets sent down when CC returns?

Please?

This season really sucks.

Two outs and nobody on for Kansas City in the top of the 10th.

So, essentially, our worst fears are coming true exactly as we figured. Ugh.

I am not even going to hope for Hosmer to try to single in Franky from second base with two outs as there is no chance it’ll happen.

Are they going to keep this POS in the rotation over Phelps? Guess we can’t send Nova and Joba to AAA.

Okay, so the key was to take away any hope I had for Hosmer to succeed and it worked, as he singled in a run. Kansas City up a run in the 10th. They’ll still lose, but I am happy about it for now at least.

I can’t believe Liriano is going to get a quality start after the 1st inning.

Nova is going to be sent down today.

Phelps has got to be a better option than Nova at this point. By a wide margin too

Doesn’t matter what TB does.

Doesn’t matter what TB does.

Of course it does. The key is to stay in first place while dealing with their injuries. When CC and A-Rod return, the team will be in much better shape. They’ll have A-Rod against lefties and they won’t have to pitch Nova.

47 Absolutely but given management I wouldn’t bet on it.  Binder will say how we have to straighten him out.

[48] because Baltimore is going to go on a streak?

Baltimore and Tampa Bay still play each other a lot, I believe. That’s good.

Do you believe in miracles? Tampa Bay lost!

49 Yeah I know just that last night and tonight have left a sour taste or was it the lemon ljmd sandwich?

Just got back. This is disturbing stuff. It really seemed that Nova had become something worthwhile.
I guess we should throw those stats in the East River.

Yay Royals! Yay win!

Martino!

Martin is so shitty that instead of not getting over .200 he’s going BACKWARDS!!

EDITED TO ADD: He was irked by my comment so he homered. I approve.

By the way, note that one hit got his average up three points from .194 to .197 because his average was so low. And yet he can’t get over .200. What the fuck?

Noises from the crowd mic: “I’m thinking fastball, Nick. Nick, what do you think?”

While I am very happy that the lead won’t become three after tonight, it will now be just five games up on Baltimore.

Why is Lowe pitching when Nova had a low PC. Why burn him?

I wish Nova had given up more runs to force Binder’s hand so we won’t hear except for
that one inning.

[64]
Now that’s complaining. It’s a three-run game. So first, you’d give up; and second - you’re really, genuinely, honestly worried about burning Derek Lowe?

I think the purpose of Derek Lowe is to burn him.

Lowe is good

I thought the purpose of Lowe was for the dunk tank.

I see Ol’ 6-or-6-Girardi was up to his old tricks tonite. Sweet.

Hey, Nova, see that? Could you do that sometimes?

Way to work the count, Teix.

Nova’s long ball problems have dated back to spring training.

Question - while I am sure most of us would say send Nova down when CC returns, what do you think will ACTUALLY happen?

I think its 70/30 Nova gets at least one more start and more likely Joba will be sent down.

Damn, Ichiro gave that shit a ride. Too bad it hung up too long.

Question, when A-Rod returns, will we actually see the optimal lineup with Ichiro in left, A-Rod at DH and Chavez at third (or A-Rod at third/Chavez at DH) much? I somehow doubt it.

[63] Not so fast, my friend.

Not so fast, my friend.

Is Kansas City going to forfeit their win?

But yeah, if Texas could pull this off, I’d sure be pleased.

a triple. that’s a good sign.

That was a weird hop, so I can’t blame Swish like the last triple, which was all Swish being awful.

I see the sucking has continued while I walked away after the Youk slam. There goes my theory that I was the problem. Safe to report, Ivan Nova: Still the suckiest bunch of suck that ever sucked.

You can pinch-hit Ibanez for Nix and then Chavez for McGahee, right? I mean, it does not matter as they’re down four runs but still…

Nice to see our groundball machine doing his thing.

Can it be that this is the real Nova? That for much of is 2+ years until now he has performed over his head, and has somehow finally been figured out/run out of gas/just plain regressed? Not that anyone is being unfair, just saying that perhaps this type of performance should have been expected.

The White Sox got swept by the Royals? and are going to sweep us tomorrow?

Remember we left Nova off the 40 man a few years ago and the Padres returned him so up until two or three years age he wasn’t considered a prospect.

I am so glad that I didn’t watch this game, just the recap was enough to burst several blood vessels. I’m going outside now to smash things.

[83]
Wait… doesn’t most of your post say that we SHOULDN’T have expected this?

[83] Pretty sure I saw a Cashman quote regarding Nova and Hughes (or was it Joba and Hughes ?) saying they’re no longer in the mode of dreaming about the upside, they (the Yankees) have accepted they are currently the pitchers they are going to be.

I wouldn’t be buying green bananas if I were any of them. That signals trade bait, to me.

If it turns out he wasn’t talking about Nova in that context, well, just ignore everything here.

Pretty sure it was Joba and Hughes.
