Tonight’s game will mark the 18th straight day the Yankees have played. They’ve gone 11-6 over the past 17 days, which is roughly a 105 win pace. They’ve pretty much done about as well as we could have realistically expected.
Unfortunately for them, the Rays are making a mockery of the rest of the league. So the Yankees’ reward for going 11-6 over the past 17 days was to lose two games off their lead over Tampa Bay in the AL East. Since the Rays will be sweeping Oakland over the next three days, it’s imperative that the Yankees at least win two of three against the White Sox. Tonight would be a good game to take since there’s very little likelihood that Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes will pitch well in consecutive games.
Comments
Youkilis has been pretty decent since changing uniforms. .241/.358/.457. Next years bench?
[1]
I know some glory in acquiring former enemies, but I don’t want to root for Yucky, the Greek God of Pissy Complaining.
I can’t believe how well Tampa Bay has been playing. Finishing in first place is so important and while a five game lead is great, the Rays’ schedule looks pretty damn easy right now. Kansas City and then Oakland? Yikes.
Unless Youkilis convinces Cashman that he is able to play the outfield, I don’t think Youkilis is particularly useful on the bench.
Also, this parade of random people’s torsos and children walking by is far more interesting than your typical pregame show.
I am shocked, SHOCKED that Tampa Bay is already leading Kansas City.
[5] the wild card game does a good job of making winning the division matter, but it’s a big step backwards in terms of getting the best teams into the post season. really annoying.
[2] This is the right answer.
Brian, are you shocked that KC has tied it up again?
[8] Ummm…
ooh, close swish.
[10] There’s a reason not to throw strikes on 0-2 - they don’t get called.
even when he hits it hard…
Wow. WOW. spectacular stop.
I hope Cano is at least coming out of it.
Welcome back, you Portuguese goof-face.
Needs more grand slams.
I’ll take it.
This team would definitely in the 2003 world series.
Take a strike Ichiro!
I like Sunday Ichiro better.
Put the Katana in their heart, Ichiro.
The guy can’t throw strikes, let him walk you with the bases loaded
Adequate first inning. Barely.
Close but not cigar, Anusface.
Ugh, this is a regular clown show from Stewart.
Not every game is lost in the top of the 1st. I feel they lost this one right there
Stewart can’t block a pitch
Kenny really excited about the Big Hurt sighting. me too!
I was sure the Yankees would lose when Chavez swung 3-0 with the bases loaded and popped out last night. I’m giving up on omens and signs and portents.
Jorge approves.
Adam Posado.
If he did that as a trap on purpose, I’d say genius.
But he actually just sucks at catcher. Probably a better hitter than Montero though.
[28] If you’re really excited, you can go out and buy a sixer of Big Hurt Beer.

Damn, Rios was playing deep.
Not a K or home run!
Cano!
At least *pretend* to slide, Robbie.
Thompson is an idiot!!!
Floyd is really getting squeezed. Is Garcia?
Robby Thompson finally makes a risky send with two outs. I approve.
What a horrible send.
Posado has his fingerprints all over tonight’s game.
To a certain extent, though, I guess Tampa Bay fan can be kinda irritated that as much as his team wins, it is not picking up all that much ground on the Yankees.
It’s gonna take a few more than 3 for the Yankees to win this.
Thompson seems to make a lot of bad decisions. Maybe runners should interpret everything opposite.
Wow, Alex rios is actually good now? I had no idea.
Breaking Bad is amazing this season
[45]
After all the hue, cry and hand-wringing, you’d think we’d have heard of that.
Swinging on 3 and 0?
What happened? Why the pitching change?
(48) Aye.WTH?
Ventura was disgusted with Floyd’s suckitude. The facial expressions were wonderful.
[50]
Except he didn’t; after last night, I thought he would be!
[51]
Thanks, OTF. Where the hell is everyone?
And - wasn’t that a time for Suzuki to steal 2nd?
And - can you imagine Joe taking a starter out in the 2nd inning when he’s only given up three runs?
[53] I can’t believe this game is only in the third inning. is there some sort of space-time phenomenon in occurrence?
Yeah, holy shit is this game crawling.
(53) Don’t know. Don’t care
Yes. 3 run lead…
Ventura looked like a very pissed off boss. Joe Kool don’t play dat.
(54,55) Aye dudes. I have to watch a film or docu. I can feel myself aging watching this farns.
Chance to break this game open.
I wonder what’s the deal with Cano’s slump. I hope it is JUST a slump.
come on, just put the game away
Posado has his fingerprints all over tonight’s game.
So, acrid-smelling urine stains all over ?
Where the hell is everyone?
Started a new job today. Felt obligated to give them a full 4.5 quality hours.
Too bad they’re not playing in the other Sox ballpark. Cano’s ball would have been at least a double, if not a HR.
Puzzled by Uncle Floyd only going 58 pitches. Injury ?
Predictable.
Congrats Joe De.
Six hits and five walks in four innings should be X # runs?
Predictable.
You mean, I presume:
a full 4.5 quality hours
?
[67] I referrred to the GIDP.
Man, Garcia…
Garcia pulling this Randy Johnson circa 2000-2001 routine has me scracthing my head.
[68]
I did realize that, you know…
ha, foul
What’s the delay?
argument
ugh
Well that sucked. Come on Fredo.
What was the argument, and what’s the Johnsonism you have in mind, WJ?
[67] I spent a few hours looking at the computer screen, spacing out. It looks like I’m working, but I’m really not.
[77] 8 strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
Scalded.
uh oh
Wasted chances-> loss
Enough Joe. Jaysus F.
get. him. out. of. there.
While I obviously hated it, good for Wise.
And yeah, seriously, Fredo?
Fuck Wise. Fuck Girardio. Does this idiot have to get hit in the head to realize a marginal pitcher has gone off the effen rails?
Well, OTF, at least Eppley would be your clear choice for a high leverage situation like this, right?
What a fucking waste of a lead.
The motto is: better to pitch ok throughout than brilliantly and then fall apart. That way they have time to take you out before you ruin the whole damned thing.
Imagine what Sid Fernandez’s record could have been!
(88) Toying with my ire you are. Having any of it I’m not.
I’m surprised he got pulled before the 6 runs or 6 innings rule kicked in.
Oh, goodie. Joba coming in. I feel better now.
Better being defined as…well, you don’t want to know.
meltdown
I’m sure this Joba move will work out well
Sadly enough, this would not even be the top three worst losses against Chicago this year.
This game was lost in the first 4 innings while the Yankees were batting, not here in the 5th.
kill me
I suddenly feel almost happy… thinking the gaping pits of White Sock announcing I have not listened to right here.
[96] Some truth to this.
Interesting that it’s good to have starts that are inconsistent, but better to be consistent within a given start.
Well, that could have been worse.
...
...
...
...it could also have been better, of course.
Wouldn’t this inning have been the reason Lowe is on the team?
