Yeah, DH Ichiro so you can get Ibanez’s defense into the game…
Am I the only person who thinks Granderson leading off behind the decrepit OBP the Yankees have at the end of their lineup is sub-optimal?
If I were to describe the Yankees’ recent nine game home stand using one word, it’d start with horse and end with shit. Thankfully, it’s over and now the Yankees get to play seven games on the road against Detroit and Toronto before hosting Texas and Boston for seven games. The Yankees will play 16 straight games without an off day, which doesn’t even factor in the three games they just played. I suppose since that’s the case DHing Ichiro might be a hair more defensible.
Anyway, you generally don’t expect to win a game against Justin Verlander, so I’m not expecting a win. I’m just hoping Ivan Nova pitches better than he has been pitching of late.
Comments
Pretending Ichiro is DH’ing instead of Ibanez is a great example of the subtle humor that brings me back to this site again and again.
No you aren’t alone SG. His OBP and K’s are a great reason for him to be the 5 or 6 hitter IMO. Have to go with Jeter, Swish, Cano, Tex, Granderson,Iguana, Chavez,Martin then Suzuki
This is going to be a real test of a road trip, I fear. Getting two trips into Detroit is another move by the schedulers to screw the team. Why not Cleveland, KC or Minny twice. I suppose Verlander will be vintage. Still can’t believe Yanks beat him last visit.

Agreed with that lineup.
The Suzuki thing is especially weird when you consider that this isn’t a guy who typically NEEDS rest. So to rest him while significantly limiting your outfield defense is an odd move, to say the least. I could see resting Swish, but not Ichiro.

Well, he is one of the oldest players on the team. So even though he hasn’t traditionally needed a lot of rest, it can’t hurt at this point in his career…. especially when you consider he’s a Yankee now making him one bad step away from ending his career.
Well, he is one of the oldest players on the team.
That’s quite an achievement, actually.
[7] Just showing up is 80% of life.
Get em next time, Kurtis.
I’ve got a feeling this is going to be a very long series.
Cano could’ve run that ball over to first and still beat Cabrera.
Teixeira is so dumb: what did he expect on a 0-2 count but a change-up outside of the strike zone?

This is at least a better at-bat than any against Felix this weekend.
23 pitches, half in one at bat?
GD had both pitches to Swish as changeups, one at 91, the other at 85. Possible?
Congrats to Verlander on his 37th no hitter.
Gameday has pitch 11 to Ibanez well outside and low.
So predictable. Ballgame.
Not that Verlander needs help, but tonight we have one of those umpire with a variable strike zone depending on the pedigree of the pitcher: Verlander gets an extra large strike zone (he’s an ace, after all), Nova not so much.
Future Gameday has the recap “Verlander throws gem, stifles Yanks”
HOW I LOOK TODAY
What is a more probable event, the Yankees scoring at least 1 run today or Alex Morgan showing up naked at my door tonight?
Runner on second-just when you want your DH up. Girardi is a genius.
Damn. That would’ve been a really good time for Ichiro’s one hit tonight.
A hit with RISP!
Way to go KKurtis!
RISSP.
Adam Dunn, meet your competition.
we need to start sending any runner on second home on any hit. Even infield singles.
On Intellivision baseball, you could get four outs by making a “double play” at the end of an inning when there were two outs before the play began. I wish opposing teams would do that to Jeter.
That was a legitimately nice play by Jeets.
After watching the sox tag Verlander for a bunch of runs at Fenway, I was sure that he wouldn’t trip against the Yankees. Selig clause, I believe.
I haven’t been watching much baseball the past week. I’ve been watching 8 hours of fencing almost daily. It’s been glorious.
[34] How much of a bummer was the Zagunis meltdown though?
[34] Me either. Blazing through The Sopranos for the first time, on 6B now.
Joke of a ballpark
[37] It’s disgracefully undisgraceful.
I was surprised by the Zagunis thing, but a little less shocked than some. I was actually nervous right away when Kim scored a few touches because she had a VERY similar meltdown at the World Championships against Velikaia in the gold medal bout.
Now, while doing that against the great Velikaia is one thing, I had no expectation that Kim could pull of something similar. But Mariel’s end of things was remarkably similar. Way too much prepping…uncertainty in her attacks, getting out-footworked by a quicker fencer especially on the attack, and a complete inability to parry-riposte (lots of futile counter-attacks).
She should have won, but Kim was much better than I gave her credit for, as she proved by pretty much fileting Velikaia in the gold. Sabre is all about quickness, and Kim looked much quicker on the strip than any of the big 3 of Zagunis, Velikaia, or Kharlan. Mariel on a good day is only a 50/50 bet to beat Kharlan these days, so I pretty much had no doubt she would lose the bronze when I saw her glassy eyed, shell-shocked look before the bout started.
Very upsetting, yes. And surprising. But not an unprecedented shock for those who have been following Mariel’s career since Beijing. The division is SO MUCH BETTER than it was even 4 years ago, and light years ahead of where it was for Athens.
I can’t believe Cano actually stole a base.
He’s up in the zone, he’s up in the zone, hi-ho the derry-o, Nova’s up in the zone.
NOTE: posted before HR
That’s it man, game over man, game over.
If you’re interested in why I started cringing even when Kim had closed even to 12-8, this video is the reason why.

By the way, I’m the “Dan Salerno” whose analysis the color guy mentions in the beginning.
Nova’s on ace for a QS…
[43] Wow! One of us is famous! Nice going.
[39] No, there was definitely no way she was going to win the bronze after that. But just giving it up like that after 8-2, 12-5 ... I was cringing watching it. I mean, good job by Kim to just own the distance like that, landing those counters every time Mariel ended short. Shocked she didn’t do anything but make those halfassed attacks that weren’t working.
Thought men’s saber was great this year. Too bad none of our guys made much noise. That Italy-Japan team foil final was great, great stuff.
We need 8 more Chavezes
16 Chavezes. That way 4 of them could play.
Deererson is not going to get it done.
[45] Hey, we had Morehouse and Homer both in the Top 8! That’s definitely “making noise” by US fencing standards. Homer beating Yakimienko was a nice moment.
My biggest disappointment was Imboden in men’s foil. I had hoped to see him make top 4, maybe medal…but drawing a ridiculously under-ranked Baldini in the Round of 16 was tough luck and Baldini was fencing like the old days. Still, Imboden and Massialas are both under 20 and Meinhardt at 22 is the real deal (just look at how he demolished Sintes in the team bout with France). This foil team could be good in Rio.

What an arm..woof! I thought Damon left Detroit.
Verlander just owns Teix.
[50] Massialas and Meinhardt were both very impressive in the bronze medal match, fencing from way behind against Germany.
You know what, I could have done at least as well as Teixeira in his last at-bat. Can I get his contract?
When did Delmon Young trade bodies with David Ortiz?
Wow, Fencers in here? I didn’t catch too much of it but I did see the men’s sabre semis and finals. Totally a different level than I’m used to watching. That Hungarian was a machine.
Gennelmen it’s a new game and Novers effin it up already.
:sigh: Speaking of meltdowns ...
Is this just a requirement now for Nova? Every game has to have an inning where he just completely shits the bed?
Dude gave up FIVE HITS this inning, and it is not even over yet!
I’d love for the Yankees to trade for Cabrera just so he could proceed to disappoint as soon as he joined the team. The dude is so consistently good it would be fascinating to see him join the Yanks to see just how he would regress.
But he’s pitching more efficiently that Verlander…
By the way, what was the asking price for Cabrera again? Could the Yankees seriously have acquired him for Hughes and Jackson? Or was it Hughes and Melky? I think they could have. Blech.
Suzyn pointed out earlier that Nova has been almost as bad as Hughes. I guess she meant April Hughes.
Chavez really has Verlander figured out. Can’t he share with the rest of the team?
Ichiro setting up the drama in the ninth to see if he extends his weird streak.
Scranton just called. They want their # 4 starter back.
Not that we were going to come back on Verlander, but that last run or two should not have happened- at least the way it did. No idea what took Joe so long to remove him.
Just tuned in sorry to see those of us who felt squeamish about Nova proved correct. Right now who I have less confidence in Fredo or Nova
Yes, six yankee losses in his last eight starts. Including those disastrous outings where he earned one run, two runs and three runs.
When do we play Seattle next?
(69) Jobber.
Nova’s era now 4.81 and headed in the wrong direction. One of those where he only gavd up 2 runs he walked 6 in 5, two others he gave up 9 hits lasting 6 and 6.1.
I wish Jeter would play a wee bit harder.
This team stinks.
Is it my imagination or does Flaherty do more games than anyone else except Kay
The fencing sounds cool, too bad I haven’t a clue what to look for. The badminton final cool, seriously, who knew the game was so fast paced. Sort of like all net play tennis.
I hope he gets Santana’d by pitching this inning.
Coned not Santana’d. I can’t root for an injury.
Wow, the ninth inning is going to be quite a comeback so that Ichiro extends his streak.
Jimmy “British” Leyland needs a piss test after allowing Verlander to stay in for that many pitches.
Great now this jerkoff gets to do his little dance
Ahh great, now this fucktard.
Come on Kurtis, cut into Adam Dunn’s lead.
I’d prefer a one run loss with a decent Nova to this debacle.
Any chance they get to play the Mariners if they make the post season?
Bring on the Mariners they don’t scare me.
Not including today, I think, Nova last 28 days OBP against 370, OPS against 920.
This second half collapse to miss the postseason is going to hurt more than 2004.

89. Objective pipe. Just won a series. Lost a game to Verlander. Granderson will break out soon.
(89) My dear friend… nothing could ever hurt that much. 1976 World Series and listening to Sparky Anderson diss Thurman paled. 2004 was the worst evah.
This kid from Granada seems pretty cool and fast.
Ichiro 0 walks in 53 PAs. I just don’t get why he refused to cultivate that skill.
[91] I remember that WS, and had become a full-blown Yankee fan by that point in time. I still hate Sparky, and Pete Rose. I could never bring myself to hate Johnny Bench. Joe Morgan, OTOH….actually, I liked a lot of Reds from that era. Ken Griffey, Foster, Concepcion, and you gotta love anyone named either Cesar or Geronimo. Yeah, Pete Rose was pretty much the main douche on that roster, and he carried enough for the rest.
Most of that was formed based on the baseball cards that came my way. We used to play some sort of trading game during recess. For the life of me I can’t remember the rules.

OTF, 2001 felt much, much worse. To me, anyway.
[95] I’m with you. 2001 felt worse than 2004 to me by a great margin. I was emotionally invested in the outcome of that series like I’d never been before or since. It wasn’t the most rational time for me, on a personal level.
Being the oldest 1960 was brutal and hurt the most considering our pythag was off the charts. 1955 was bad since it was my first experience with losing. In 04 I felt uncomfortable after game 4 by game 6 I had fully accepted the inevitable. Game 7 I went to a movie.
And 2001 was way worse then 2004. Last inning lead game 7, Mo error, bloop hit.
Surrounded by Townies as I was in 2004, nothing was worse for me. I was working in Billerica MA. Spoon fed shit for weeks. Being a Jets fan also made it even worse.
Being a Jets fan also made it even worse.
Doesn’t being a Jets fan always make it worse?
