It’s not a question of if the Yankees will lose this game, because they will never win another game road game against the Rays again. It’s just a question of which of their ridiculously overpaid players will be the most to blame for the loss. I don’t feel like doing the actual math, but I’m pretty sure this Rays starting nine is making less than the Yankees’ usual starting first baseman this year. I am certain they’re making less than the combined salaries of the usual starting 1B and 3B. Actually, their whole payroll might be less than that.
Comments
for a team with the second best record in the AL, they stink

A-Rod gets it going tonight. No, seriously.
Isn’t it strange that the NYY game is never the MLB.TV free game?
I wonder why?
[3] There are always a couple early in the season. After that, no.
The most annoying thing about the free mlb.tv game is that they’re blacked out in NY. If I could watch the game on my tv at home I wouldn’t be trying to watch it on my computer at work, now would I, mlb?
Jeter’s gotten his hit for the day. They should pull him now, ‘cause 1 is his limit.
Two hits with RISP?? Who are these guys?
So, uhh, Wise?
Dewayne Wise-hitting machine
Nothing prettier than watching a left-handed batter pulling an inside fastball from a righty for a homer
I got my eye on you, Waters.
[11] Seriously. Alex is on pace for the Waters sombrero.
Jorge Cervelli.
I cannot believe the TV d-bags are blaming Wise for the run.
You suck Martin. I couldn’t think of anything witty to type.
I have tickets for their series against the Rays in September. Thinking about selling them to save me an afternoon of agony.
Fucking Jeter
WHO ARE THESE OLD GUYS
It’s like the Yankees hate freedom.
[19] But George Steinbrenner was born on the fourth of July!
If you can’t hit Russell make the effing plays
Ibanez won’t score here
EDIT: Ibanez will score here, but the Yanks will give back the run soon so it won’t matter.
I’d walk Chavez here if I were Shields.
Ibanez and Chavez. I just love those guys.
See what happens when you don’t listen to dred, James?
The whole season does not constitute “a slump.”
Viva Chavez y Ibanez
Jinkies. This is going to be another bullpen-burner.
I prefer the “good” Nova.
Ruh roh. DJ Mitchell time?
So much fun getting beat by these crumb hitters
Is there a astronomical phenomenon that’s the opposite of a super nova?
[22]
Jon, forgive me, but - kiss off, why don’t you?
[32] Black hole? Maybe white dwarf.
Seems like this team plays down to the competition. The Rays could barely put up 5 runs against Stony Brook.
What is the difference between a red, brown, and white dwarf star? I could use wiki but fingers…so…tired…
[33] Turns out I was being too optimistic. I should’ve said “multiple runs” and “this inning”
Wise is LOCKED IN.
Wise looks a bit like Strawberry, no?
Good thing Jeter bunted!
Sucked.
When Arod starts being Arod watch out.
jeter should never be allowed to bunt on his own.
[39]
Except he’s already reached his potential.
Listening to Piniella and Flaherty makes it crystal clear why baseball is often played in such a dumb way.
I wish Singleton would ask Piniella about the game he gave away against the Yanks because he got mad at his relief pitcher—a Japanese guy—and left him in to allow like 8 runs.
Piniella is probably drunk. Flaherty is just the worst.
Flaherty is the worst.
Cano should always lead off.
All they need is Lorenz instead of Singleton. And how do Flaherty or Lorenz have jobs? And how did Lorenz ever win an emmy?
Is there a standard calculation for run support?
If so, is it runs scored by the team in games started by X, or is it runs scored by the team while X is pitching?
I’m worried that A-Rod will be A-Rod again just as soon as Gardner comes back to play for the Yankees.
Now that was a bad send.
Sending him when Zobrist has the ball before he was even rounding third.
[49] Anyone can win an Emmy. They hand out the local ones like candy. Same statue and everything.
Players, coaches, everyone firing on all cylinders.
That was an atrocious send in a one run ballgame. This team is killing themselves nightly.
Players, coaches, everyone firing on all cylinders.
Fans?
Nearly impossible to see in live time, and when the ball beats the runner it’s called an out 99% of the time, but quite a slide there. Looked safe on the slow-mo.
The Yankees are pathetic on the base paths, just pathetic. I think Jorge permanently infected the team with bad base running before he left.
I’m irked that [43] went unappreciated.
It’s just a question of which of their ridiculously overpaid players will be the most to blame for the loss.
Cano gets the nod.
Ralph Woodson is not a DB but he has pretty good coverage. Hate this game.
[43, 59] Well done, WP.
[60] No, it’s Jeter.
[62]
Flaherty is the worst.
But FGas is the best!
So, Boston will be a half game back after this weekend, right?
This is so lame.
Thank G-d I am sharing this experience with you guys. If I didn’t have you I would probably kick my dog…even harder.
[65] Best case scenario
Oh goody-Chad Qualls time.
Qualls is nails. That’s why they call him Quails.
Spent time with Cheney? You want to kick your dog? Redirect your frustration good sir.
The horror.
[71] Well, you should meet my dog.
This game is already out of reach. No damage done there.
Hey, don’t worry everyone. Pedro Feliciano had an impressive bullpen session today.
[75] - How long till his setback?
Burke Badenhop? Is this a joke?
[75] Pitching from the trench?
When do we play interleague again? I hate the rules…but I likes me the winnings….games like these just make me sad and/or drunker
Move NYY to the NL East, add a Brooklyn AL team
It’s fitting that Russel will make the last out tonight. Not to complain, but I’m pretty sick of him at this point. He’s a disembodied batting eye at this point. Walks are nice, but what else is he giving us?
81- dred…please complain.
Russell, showing the athleticism of a mussel!

I keep hearing the opening credits theme to “Casino” during A-Rod at-bats. This downfall is going to be brutal. It already is.
81 didn’t one of the announcers refer to it as a slump earlier?
Is the complaint thread back?
[86] It never left.
Just noticed that A’s with 2 in the bottom of the 9th beat Townies and Aceves who is now 0-6
Happy Independence Day to all! In honor of this patriotic occasion let’s send Russell Martin back to Canada, no?
Since it would be unseemly to complain on a day such as this, I will be getting drunk outside instead of watching this pack of overpaid, geriatric, communist losers get swept inside a baseball stadium that stands as a monumental insult to everything that makes this country great.
I think complaining is the raison d’être of Independence Day.
[91] The Declaration was something of a complaint thread, wasn’t it?
[92] And just try the Constitution. Unreasonable search and seizure! If the Founding Fathers were so innocent, what did they have to fear from the cops?
Plus, the right to free speech is obviously meant to refer to the RLYW.
Wasn’t it actually declared (read from the steps of Independence Hall) several days later?
[94] Now that is a complaint.
Who needs a Declaration of Independence when you’ve got such a genius Chief Justice protecting Liberty?
Happy Independence Day! Just that we are all more dependent than ever.
Now that’s the Don I remember.
EDIT: Two comments in a row started with “Now”. Today I am liberated from the rules of good writing.
Don! Is that really Don?
Who is this “Don” character?
Darnell McDonald? I’d rather keep Dewayne Wise.
