Am I crazy for thinking Phil Hughes on the mound plus Raul Ibanez in LF = a bad idea?
I think we tend to judge Hughes a bit too harshly. He’s pitched in portions of 15 innings this year, and the other team has only scored in 8 of those innings. Really, if you take away the 10 runs he’s allowed he’s been as good as any pitcher in baseball this year. With the news about Michael Pineda’s labrum tear, Hughes has a chance to stay in the rotation all year. He won’t do it if he doesn’t start pitching better than he has.
It’s pretty interesting to me how similar Scott Feldman’s 2009 (189.2 IP, 114 ERA+) is to Hughes’s 2010 (176.1 IP, 103 ERA+), mainly because of how crappy they’ve both been (175.2 IP, 88 ERA+ for Feldman, 88 IP of 75 ERA+) since their respective good seasons.
I was primarily hoping the Yankees would just not get swept in this series, so I suppose I should be happy that they won the opener and not really care about what happens tonight. But unfortunately that’s not the way fandom works. Even a win tonight won’t change the fact that I’m really bummed about the Pineda situation, so whatever.

Robbie Ross?
What kind of name is Robbie Ross??
Is this some fucking boy’s adventure novel or some such shit???
(Guy will shut us down, of course…)
Snuggles, can you please liveblog more runs for NYA and fewer for Texas?
Thanks.
[196] Ебля ребенка. I hope the context is clear.
Also, Texas is NOT better than NYA.
It’s all about execution (see YM’s post a while back).
[203]
Gakk!!!

I realize I haven’t posted the score yet. FAIL. it’s 5-2 Rangers. Hughes lasted 2.2 4 runs. The Yankees scored 2 in the 4th and napoli hit a solo shot off of Phelps.
BTW Buchholz sucks too

Phelps gets Cruz swinging.
Nice K of Cruz there. Love how Phelps goes up 0-2 on most of these batters.
Pete tells me no emphatically. It was meant as Eff yeah…Baby.

And quickly gets another batter to 0-2. Phelps takes a liner off the glove. It bounces straight to Cano who barely gets Murphy at 1st. 2 outs.
Judging by reaction of [205], I’m going to assume that [203] is not G-rated turn of phrase.
1-2-3 inning people!!!

A quick grounder for out 3. yay! When does the mercy rule go into effect? The 7th right?

Cano looks at a nice fastball inside for strike 3

Tex…
Is it wrong to be mildly amused by the “get rid of cable” commercials?
Yanks lookin’ good against this Texas bullpen….

Swisher watches what looked like a very hittable strike go by him for strike 3 yo the bottom of the 6th.

Moreland takes Phelps deep. Moreland
When we said page 3 was the rally page we forgot to specify for whom :(

Some dude won 200 dollars for that. So that’s a thing. Kinsler singles to center and the Rangers are looking to further pad their lead.
[216] They went from Hughes to Fuse in a very short time. A few were clever, but most of them now feel forced.
Like the dude in those insurance commercials. You know the one.
Also, please to explain [203]. I would have expected both Pedro and Bubba to be able to splain.
Hey, at least Minnessotta is still hanging in there.

Things are happening. there’s an out and now two men on after an IBB.
[222] Don’t have a son with a dog collar. Solid advice IMO.
Re [203] I believe OTF used a swear word in my mother tongue…but since I never learned *that* sort of language I am not sure exactly - going mostly off ol’ Wombat’s reaction.
Is bloom off the Phelps rose?

Single to left score Kinsler still 1st and 2nd 1 out.
This calls for optimism that I am unable to muster.

[222] I can translate it phoentically, but I remember almost no Russian.
Is bloom off the Phelps rose?
Nah, it’s just that Fuse fucked this game up so bad, ain’t nobody can play it right.

Eppley gets an inning ending DP to end this inning of suffering.
A question for the RLYW hive mind that has nothing to do with this abomination of a game:
Anyone here have really bad eyesight and own an iPad? If yes, do you use it a lot for reading (a la Kindle)?
Bringin’ it back on topic: I thought Feliz was a starter now?

Iguano crushes a pitch from Feliz deep to right for a HR. 7-3
[231 They are skipping a start so he’s available
How many times will Sterling call it Tigers Stadium tonight? More than we score runs? It’s going to be close.
The second word means “child.” It is in the genetive case.
The first word is a non-existent morpheme with an instantly recognizable root. That root has the meaning, more or less, of a contemporary non-standard English lexeme derived, I believe, from an Anglo-Saxon verb meaning “to plough.”
Best I can do for youse.
Eeeewwww

Somehow there are two outs. I wandered away from the TV for a moment gathering more tissues.
(225)Guilty. I’ll stick to Blues and Jazz artists for awhile. In over my head is something I’m quite used to.
[231] My eyes are so bad I wear +4.5 contacts just for walkin’ around vision and still use +1.75 readers to read. I have tried the iPad/kindle fire screens and they’re about like a laptop computer screen for me. I still need the readers.
So I have an e-ink reader which at least has loooong battery life compared to the color reader/tablets.

Jeter strikes out. Feliz looked really good there.
They have this wacky technology that displays letters without backlighting on one-use flexible materials… oh, forget it.

[240] e-ink. also some OLEDS.
Ah missed the 1 use…
Yesss!!! FU Boston.
[238] Yeah, I had a Kindle, was just wondering whether it is worth it to upgrade to an iPad now that it has crapped out. Maybe I’ll just get the little cheap one as replacement.
[240] Do go on…
Washington Ovechkins win in OT to eliminate TWN!

I believe I will have to give up the live blog. my body craves sleep. Next time I won’t feel like I’m dying and hopefully Hughes won’t be driving the nails in to his coffin and mine.
If the Yankees continue to respond to each Rangers run scoring inning by scoring one less run, the Yankees should tie the gae in the 219th inning, if my calculations are correct*.
*(my calculations aren’t correct)
What happened to your Kindle? Considering one myself.
Boston bullpen about to pull off one of its funny tricks?
[245] It’s like some cruel fibonacci thing they’ve got running.
Two game losing streak and Verlander upcoming, not optimal
Mourneau?
Let’s go Twins!
Laptops’ current ERA: 8.87
Minny showing signs of life.
[246] I am not sure, I have to send it in to get checked out, it appears that the battery died but my warranty has expired and I"m not sure how much the repair will cost if repair is even possible. I loved it though, definitely a fan of e-ink.
Great .711 OPS there, Alex.
edit: thanks, ym.
Albers in to face the immortal Trevor Plouffe with the bases loaded.
Boston pen, the gift that keeps on giving.
[253] My understanding is the battery is only factory replaceable, and that the cost to do so is conveniently the same as what they ask you to pay towards a trade-in of your old kindle towards a new one. But the last time I looked was before the 2011 price crash on readers, so… yeah plan on dropping $150 for a new one and moving all your content over.
God dammit, Burroughs you fucking piece of shit.
It took the Twins to deliver on it, but we finally got our CT for the night.
Holy shit, that ball kid is sitting next to a couple of fucking sociopaths.
If you’re the Twins, how do you not send that runner? Jeez, you’re afraid of Marlon Byrd’s cannon?
[260] Let’s see…make a kid happy, or get laid tonite…hmmmmm…..
Where the eff are you guys watching the Sawx? I have the Bruins postgame laments on NESN.
MLB.tv
See, if getting laid is contingent on not giving a ball to a crying kid, then we know that the woman is a sociopath, at least.
Also they just looked way too happy juxtaposed to a crying kid; of course it’s not big deal and the kid’s parents were having a laugh. At the game I wouldn’t have a problem with it at all, but on TV it looked terrible. Like Nixon in 1960.
Also a sociopath…
Is this the worst rally page ever?
Ha ! Now they’re showing the dude talking to his neighbor and the kid. And the broad is looking daggers that way because she’s no longer the center of his attention. Classic. He’s gonna get the silent treatment all the way home and then nothing.
[266] In so many ways.
The Teixeira contract is going to be excruciating to watch play out, isn’t it?
Well, just as something nice to think about, Jeter’s two singles in 4 PAs today lowers his OPS.
[269] It isn’t already?
Whatever Swisher.
Swisher is awesome.
[269] It isn’t already?
Oh, it is. But it’s going to get even worse.
[266] Our liveblogger lost interest, man. We’ve devolved into home electronics, psychoanalysis of the crowd, and hockey results. It’s the worst gamechatter ever.
We need to go back to complaint threads. Optimism is not our true medium.
[264]Go raibh maith agat. That I can do properly.
[266] It’s gotta be pretty close. When I give up in the 4th inning It’s pretty much a Farnshow.
Is Parmalee OK? Shit. That sucked.
Boston’s relievers have hardly struck anyone out.
Their stuff wasn’t very good. Which is more important than the fact that they haven’t allowed any runs over what, six innings?
Timely article about e-readers:

Twins showed us how a CT is done. Bravo.
I see I wasn’t really alone in abandoning ship tonight. Just too depressing a night to deal. Single malt to drown the sorrows. Sigh…
