The Rays enjoyed their temporary home at Citi Field on Tuesday night, even if most of the fans were rooting against them.
And even though most of those fans were hoping the Yankees would take another step toward the postseason, the Rays turned the energy in their favor in a 2-1 win. Five Rays pitchers combined on a three-hitter, and Adeiny Hechavarria hit a tie-breaking home run in the eighth inning, ruining Sonny Gray’s best start as a Yankee and giving the Rays what they hope will be an important win.
Steve Cishek seemed to believe this was a much bigger win for the Rays than it really was. They’re, what, at .500, six back of the Wild Card with, like, 21 teams between them and the second Wild Card. They’re d-u-n done.
Anyhow, shitty loss, although I continue to love the Sonny Gray Experience. Talent well spent, Cash! This guy is really good.
Tough game later today, with Jaime Garcia matched up against Chris Archer. That’s a very bad matchup for the Yankees, especially since they struggled (well, to be precise, Judge REALLY struggles) against power-throwing righties.
