Yankees.com: Yanks hammer O’s to end four-game slide

NEW YORK—Robinson Cano hit a grand slam and Derek Jeter drove in three runs as the Yankees snapped their four-game losing streak in convincing fashion, defeating the Orioles, 12-3, on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees erupted for seven runs in the third inning, highlighted by Cano’s ninth career grand slam—and second of the season—a moonshot to right off Baltimore reliever Kevin Gregg. Jeter also ripped a two-run double in the inning, part of a three-hit performance for The Captain.

Behind six strong innings from starter Phil Hughes (11-8), New York peppered Orioles starter Zach Britton (1-1) for seven runs in 2 2/3 innings, powering just its fourth victory in the last 13 games.

Even if you are skeptical about Baltimore maintaining their current pace, the Yankees losing three games off their lead against them in three days would have been brutal.  By salvaging today the Yankees managed to avoid that.

They stopped playing and everyone is going home.  You even made a new thread with the game recap.  How are they going to blow this lead now?

[1] I’m not sure. But I’m pretty sure that it has something to do with the spelling of McGehee’s name. “McGehee?” Why the hell is there an extra ‘e’ in there? WTF!?

[2] I’ve never heard it pronounced.  Is it like McGee or like the Broncos’ running back (McGahee)?

[3]  It’s pronounced McGee.

[2] His whole name is a mess. Extra e’s and h’s galore, all silent. Yet we’re supposed to guess what’s missing betweem the m and the c. Is it “Mack”, “Mick”, “Muck”, “Mock”, “Meck” - no guidance whatever. Very user unfriendly.

Personally, I’m going with “Mook”. Mook-hee he is, and should be.

So opinion on Hughes’s outing? I’m a Phil-natic, but I was a bit disappointed he wasn’t more efficient and getting to later innings in a blow-out.

[6] From the box score he got hit around a bit, but he didn’t give up a HR and was stingy with the runs. Seems like a game where he didn’t have his best stuff (best stuff = HRs) but managed to get through without too much damage.

yeah, the rain can’t have helped, and he was basically throwing nothing but fastballs for a lot of it. even more so than usual that is…

I just checked out mlbtr, because I’m bored at work, and happened upon some great news. Wil Nieves has just been DFA’d by the Rockies. You know Cash is going to be all over that!

.

Afanasyeva, a Russian gymnast, was the reigning world champion for the floor exercise. She delivered a strong performance on Tuesday, until she crashed on her knees on her final pass. The mistake devastated her teammates, who were visibly shocked and upset.

NBC was hit for not airing the routine — a decision that critics said it made to create more suspense around Team USA. The American team was set to perform after the Russians, and was already ahead in the previous events.

They carefully avoided showing the score also.

[10] I really hope NBC fails to get another Olympics contract after this.

Because I choose not to pay for TV, I can’t watch it on the internet without jumping through hoops. The state of media companies is a joke and the fact that they have yet to figure out the internet does not bode well for their futures.

Grab Johnny Damon, now. Matsui, too, if available.

If we can’t field a winning team, at least we can hold a reunion tour.

Edit: And TSCC is now available for a dunk tank gig.

I get diving but synchronized diving.  WTF.

Misty and Keri dropped the first set.  The whole world is upside down.

How do you know someone doesn’t have TV? They’ll tell you.

[15] Only because NBC forces me to.

I also blame Joba.

This thread is confusing. I’m not sure who has TV and who doesn’t.

If you dont have tv you have to read.  Eff that.

Can Tigers hang on to a 2 run lead in the 9th?

It may rain….so….Bud says TWN wins…..

I prefer Texas to lose, but if they’re going to win, at least it was against the Angels.

Anyhow, what a WILD victory for Texas. They tie it in the bottom of the ninth inning. Then LA scores three in the top of the tenth. Then Texas wins it with a bases loaded hit in the bottom of the tenth.

CRAZINESS.

I dream of Profar pushing Andrus into the waiting arms of the Yankees after Jeter retires/becomes at least a part-time DH. Could you imagine Elvis and Robinson turning two?

Andrus is going to be asking for sooooooooo much money.

But yeah, he’d be a great replacement for Jetes.

Haven’t tried it myself. I’m using NBC’s app to stream events during the day at work over my phone with predictably choppy and app-crash-tastic results (Thanks, IT guy, for blocking the NBCOlympics website!) just to be able to see the fencing.

Bad goddamn day for Zagunis, the US’s only real chance of fencing gold (barring some kind of men’s team foil goddamn miracle).

Hughes’ velo was pretty bad yesterday. Generally, it’s been low over the past month+ and the Ks seem to be starting to disappear. Hoping it’s a blip/my mind is playing tricks on me. Though, it would make sense given how few innings he pitched last year.

The new acquisition Casey McGehee- isn’t he really that guy on Pawn Stars? You know the middle generation guy? The good news is he’s not one dimensional- lots of speed, tools ya know.

Fragile Slade Heathcott- back in cf these days and went 3-4 with a HR last night. I’d like to see him make it to the big club. Yanks promoting Melky Mesa to AAA and maybe a couple more guys. Cust released to make room.

Hughes was ok yesterday but he really did have lower velocity all game. I don’t think he got over 92 and with his secondary stuff- he depends more on velocity. He did all right considering everything. At least he didn’t crap his bed after the big inning like someone else the night before.

The Orioles were 0-15 wRISP yesterday. Maybe it’s something in the water at the stadium.

[26] Looks like FG agrees with your memory, unfortunately. Based on the velocity charts his numbers have been down 1-2 mph the last 8 starts or so, and last night may have been his worst average velocity of the year. Earlier in the year he was getting it up to 94-96 on occasion, but lately he’s been topping out around 93.

Then again, he’s also got roughly a 3.21 ERA (4.77 FIP) and 3.4 K/BB over that same time, so who knows. Maybe it’s time to get off the Phranchise wagon again before he gives up 7 ER in 1.2 IP at the Rogers Centre or something.

Here are Hughes’s average fastball velocities by game.

04/08: 91.7
04/14: 92.1
04/19: 91.4
04/25: 92.3
05/01: 93.0
05/06: 93.6
05/12: 92.5
05/17: 92.8
05/22: 92.3
05/28: 92.5
06/03: 92.9
06/09: 92.5
06/15: 93.0
06/20: 91.8
06/26: 92.1
07/01: 91.3
07/07: 92.0
07/16: 92.3
07/21: 91.9
07/27: 92.8
08/01: 91.0

So yeah, yesterday was his worst velocity of the season, but he was pretty good in the previous start.

[30] And unknown also of course is if there is anything intentional in it.  I read somewhere - a Yankee site but can’t remember which one - that aroudn the begining of June Hughes changed his arm slot to a little bit lower.  I think the conclusion was it cost him a bit of velocity but added some movement - including downward movement which can get more GB - and overall the results had been better.  I may not be remembering it 100%.  But though velocity has been down a bit past month or so, it could be a by-product of adding movement.  Velocity loss by itself is bad, but if you trade velocity for movement it can be an overall positive.
