Yankees.com: Sabathia heads to disabled list with groin strain
Yankees ace CC Sabathia is heading to the 15-day disabled list with a Grade 1 groin strain.
Manager Joe Girardi said Sabathia is expected to miss only two starts and should return to the rotation after the All-Star break. The club will announce a corresponding roster move Thursday, but right-hander Freddy Garcia will take Sabathia’s place in the rotation.
“I think you can tell by the way he’s moving around more than anything. He doesn’t like to come out,” Girardi said. “I’m sure we’ll be a little bit cautious when he comes back, and we’ll ask him. [The doctor said if] you give him the 10-15 days, that [injury is] going to heal and it should not be an issue.”
Anyone who thinks CC will miss only two starts…well, I presume you just started following the Yankees this afternoon.
Still, it says a lot about how well the team has played as of late that I find myself not nearly as worried as I normally would at the loss of the Yankees’ best pitcher. Heal up soon, CC!

isn’t there someone other than Freddy who can fill the slot in the rotation? Anyone?
Cliff Lee?

Eh. No other reliever currently on the roster would really be expected to go more than 2 innings. DJ Mitchell just pitched so he’s out. Phelps just pitched 2 days ago; he’s only worked up to 3.1IP so I supposed they could call him up, but he’d only be on 3 days rest. I can see them not wanting to push him and he’d probably be limited to 3IP.
Warren pitched on the 24th, so he’d actually be on 4 days rest. But, Warren isn’t on the 40 man roster, so they’d need to make a move to bring him on. IDK if they’re ready to do that at this point if CC is only going to miss 2 starts. Especially as they’re also going to need to start freeing up roster spots soon. CC is the only one on the 15 day DL. Gardner, Aardsma, and Joba could all be ready to come off the DL before August 1st. Some of those guys may force a DFA (e.g. Wise DFA’d for Gardner). But they may be running out of “easy” spots to free up. And also they may look at add a major-leaguer or two at the deadline.
Basically, I think Freddy gets the Friday start. If he does well he gets another one next week. CC is hopefully back after that. If Freddy fails they either call up Phelps for the next start, or possibly DFA Freddy and call up Warren.
The only reason the Yankees are keeping Garcia around is for a case like this. He’s probably pitching for his roster spot on Friday. If his upside is long reliever that you can use in blowouts then he’s probably going to lose his spot should Aardsma or Joba show that they’re ready to pitch in the second half.
I think Garcia pitched in bad luck to start the year and I think he’d pitch pretty well as a starter now if given a chance. Doesn’t mean he’ll be good on Friday, but we’ll see how it goes.
