Yankees.com: Power, patience and pitching lead Yanks

NEW YORK—Manager Joe Girardi was not willing to call Tuesday’s eked-out victory the end of a slump at the plate, but the Yankees appeared to be cured of whatever ailed them during Wednesday’s 8-3 win over the Royals.

Girardi spent much of his pregame news conference defending Alex Rodriguez, who suddenly began facing questions about his age in the midst of a power slump.

Yes, Girardi said, Rodriguez can still carry a team with his bat.

Maybe A-Rod’s power isn’t quite all gone yet.

I’d have been happy if Andy Pettitte pitched at the level of a fourth starter after a year off and given his age.  So far he’s been a lot better than that.  I wouldn’t bet on him maintaining an ERA in the mid 2s all year, but he’s come up big twice for a team that needed it pretty badly.

Derek Jeter’s three hits moved him into a tie for 16th place on the all-time hit list, and he’s now two hits behind George Brett for 15th.

The team still stinks though.

Has any Yankee starter this year NOT given up a home-run in a start?

Well, Pettitte just tossed 8 innings of shutout against Cincy five days ago ...

Think theyll offer Andy 8 years at 15 per?

[3] The flat ground all-stars do need a starter.

Speaking of which what ever happened to Marte a/o Jose Feliciano(hard to pitch wo eyesight )

[5] I’m not sure, but it’s a bad sign when your Fangraphs search says you’ve played up to 2010

I was thinking of Giradi’s good attributes last night, and while I do not know if this has any actual impact on the Yankees’ performance, I think it is interesting to note that he seems to be one of those rare managers who gets behind all of his guys evenly. Girardi is going to support you whoever you are. Torre could be one of the most supportive dudes in the world…unless you weren’t one of his guys. Girardi seems freer with who he supports.

Where’s the daily rant about Teixeira? If you say nice things about A-Rod, doesn’t “Fair and Balanced” demand we savage Teix?

I think it is interesting to note that he seems to be one of those rare managers who gets behind all of his guys evenly.

Jorge Posada may quibble with that.

I think far and away Girardi’s best attribute is how judicious he is with intentional walks.  Actually, no.  Bullpen management.

Oh yeah, he did screw up with Jorge. That had to be a weird situation, though, as they played together and were in competition for the catching job for a couple of years.

But yeah, that is a fair point, he did not handle Jorge well.

And yes, I think bullpen management is definitely his BEST skill. I was trying to think of skills beyond that while I was on the train coming home last night and it was getting kind of difficult. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think the Yankees would be better off with another manager, really, but trying to think of things Girardi is specifically GOOD at is tough. I think interpersonal skills is one of them.

I think Girardi does a good job of resting the regulars and I like the fact that he changes the lineup vs. LHP and RHP.  I know a lot of people don’t like the constant platoon matching up he does with the pitching staff, but statistically it’s logical and he does a good job with that as well.

I can’t believe how good Pettitte has been.

Yay win!

Just seeing a crooked number on the scoreboard after three innings was pretty satisfying.  I haven’t been a Battlecat hater, but I didn’t expect this out of him.  We’ll see how it shakes out going forward, though, for now I’m happy one of my favorite Yankees is back and doing well.

Former Yankee Zach McAllister had a nice outing last night for the Tribe against the Tiggers.  Zach, a big 24 yo righty, was sent to the Indians in 2010 for Austin Kearns.  Kearns provided a well-needed .668 OPS in 36 games for the Yankees with a 3.2 K:BB ratio. And zero ABs in the post-season.  Unfortunately for Zach, looks like CLV will be sending him back to AAA where he’s compiled some really nice numbers since his first year in AAA as a 22 year old.  Zach was the Yankees 3rd best prospect at the end of 2009.

Looking back at that list, yikes.
1. Jesus Montero - Gone, traded for a guy Cashman scouted on FanGraphs.
2. Austin Romine - DL, back injury.
3. Zach McAllister - Gone, traded for a back-up OFer that couldn’t hit.
4. Arodys Vizcaino - Gone, traded for Javy Vazquez Take II and Boone Logan (nice, a guy that has actually contributed).
5. Manny Banuelos - AAA, struggling a bit and dealing with elbow stiffness.
6. Michael Dunn- Gone, traded for Javy Vazquez Take II and Boone Logan.
7. Mark Melancon - Gone, traded for Lance Berkman.
8. Corban Joseph - Raking at AA, coming off a pretty nasty ankle injury, added to the 40-man last winter.  Could be at AAA this summer.
9. Kevin De Leon - repeating low A as a 21 yo and continuing to struggle with the strike zone, and hitting, and base running, and fielding.
10. Andrew Brackman - - Gone, option declined after providing nothing of value for 5 years and ~$6 million.

[13] Must… Keep… Prospects… must not trade for veteran players…

[14] Not so much keep every prospect until they’re old, grizzled and/or exposed, but make a better effort at getting something of value.  Or at least keeping some depth in AAA instead of having to run out and kick over rocks looking for a replacement part every June.

McAllister is a bit of a bitter pill to swallow in particular. He breezed through most levels, scouts projected him as an innings eating #3 starter, encountered some trouble as a 22 yo in AAA and then got put on a bus to Cleveland for a guy the Yankees didn’t need.

[15] In what world was McAllister going to be a #3?

Also, I believe you are confusing Joseph and Adams in regards to the ankle.

I actually don’t see many faults in Girardi besides the bullpen by numbers approach.  And really, that isn’t a fault you can fault him for since anyone you would replace him with would do the exact same thing.

Overall he is great at bullpen management and getting people days off.  I think he could do a better job at getting guys like Jeter and maybe A-Rod a few more days off but since you actually have to chain them to the bench as it.

I know I disagree with most on the situational aspects of his management but I have a feeling that all that binder stuff comes from the top.  And really, no matter who is right it really isn’t a big deal either way.  Kind of like lineup order.

As for how he handled Posada, are we talking about the dropping him to 9th causing Jorge to quit?  Because I wouldn’t put that on Joe.  He was absolutely horrible at that point.  He probably should have been benched.

[16] You’re right on David Adams. I was looking at CoJo’s minor league numbers he only had 31 games at AA in 2010, but that was because he was in high A earlier in the year and not injured.

I should say McAllister was projected as a back of the rotation guy with potential to be a #3 starter (much like Ivan Nova).  His fastball velocity is really his limiting factor.

[17] And really, no matter who is right it really isn’t a big deal either way

I’ve long believed that managers don’t make a team much better, but they can certainly make it worse.  Dusty Baker could be managing the Yankees.

[19] - Dusty Baker couldn’t destroy any of our pitcher prospects because they are all destroyed by the time they get to the MLB level anyway.  IT’S A PERFECT FIT!

As for how he handled Posada, are we talking about the dropping him to 9th causing Jorge to quit?  Because I wouldn’t put that on Joe.  He was absolutely horrible at that point.  He probably should have been benched.

Dropping him to ninth would be one thing.  Dropping him to ninth without talking to him first in a nationally televised game against Boston seemed a bit much.  Maybe Girardi was oblivious to the increased scrutiny at the time he decided to do it, but I don’t think he’s that out of touch.  I doubt he did it to explicitly embarrass Posada, but it came off that way.

[21] - I can see that.
