Yankees.com: Hughes’ rise continues as Yanks stay hot

NEW YORK—Phil Hughes pitched eight shutout innings, Curtis Granderson drove in two runs and Alex Rodriguex homered as the Yankees defeated the Indians, 6-4, on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees (45-28) maintained the best record in the Majors, winning their fourth straight game behind the sharp effort from Hughes, who blanked Cleveland on six hits to post his fourth victory in his last five starts.

After his last start I was anxious to see how Hughes would recover.  I can’t help but think that we’re going to see a string of bad starts like we’ve seen so often in his career.  That he rebounded tonight was very encouraging, just as it was when he recovered from his bad start in Anaheim.

Yay Best Record in Baseball !

Hughes ERA back to 4.48. Not bad for a 5th starter. Other starters at 3.29 - 3.40 - 3.45 - 4.25.

Delicious.

Hughes ERA back to 4.48. Not bad for a 5th starter.

Not bad for a 5th starter in the AL East, too.

Hilarious night in baseball. There was Wise, plus, Ardolis Chapman tumbled after making a save! Literally tumbled.

Where does the Chapman tumble rank on the list of dramatic things that you’ve seen?

That he rebounded tonight was very encouraging, just as it was when he recovered from his bad start in Anaheim.

I think a Yankee starter’s bad start in Anaheim is a norm, not an exception. So that rebound doesn’t quite count.

I was at the game in some nice seats (courtesy of a law firm that does business with my wife’s company) and it was definitely a great game to watch. The comped beer helped, too. wink

I’m going to the game today.  What’s the current deal re: bags, food, water and security?  Thanks.

Frog: clear plastic bags, small other bags OK, no backpacks, brief/suitcases or gym bags; no laptops, OK tablets (I think). OK food and water in clear unopened bottles in a see-through-ish plastic bag. No other liquids.

Real nice to see Hughes bounce back.  His velo remains good (93, some 94), and now guys are popping it up instead of hitting it out.  But it was his curve that looked really good last night.  He was dropping it in for strikes at will.

But at this point Cory Wade is useless. and without a good 6th inning guy we are doomed.

But at this point Cory Wade is useless

Sure, but he could turn it around today (literally) and for the next 2 months be the effective pitcher he has been.  That’s the nature of ALL relief pitchers, even the elite ones.

without a good 6th inning guy we are doomed

Think this is tongue in cheek…should add something like /girardi’d to the end if you want to truly convey that though. wink

If we remove Hughes first X terrible starts, what do his numbers look like? Seems to me outside his early struggles he’s pitched much better than a back end guy.

[13] If we throw out April, his last 11 starts he’s pitched 70 1/3 IP (6.4 per start), with 64K/15BB (fantastic!) and a 3.71 ERA.  All those runs were earned so same RA.  His average GS is 55 over that span.  Possibly a bit lucky on BIP with a .273 BABIP, but that isn’t too far out of whack.  Biggest problem is still HR, as he has allowed 14, which is 1.79 per 9IP.  IDK when I look at those numbers sure looks more like a #2 in the AL East, where the only thing keeping him from being a #1 is the HR…but I smoked the objective pipe this morning.

BBREF has him at .8 WAR through 15 starts, which prorates out to 1.7 WAR over 32 starts.  More like a mid-rotation #3/#4 than back of rotation.  And of course if April was the anomoly, we could certainly end up more in the 2.5-3 WAR range, which is #2/#3.

[13] I took out April and he’s pitched to a 4.13 ERA outside of April, albeit with 2 absolutely terrible starts, Atlanta and Anaheim. Those two starts alone account for nearly 1/2 the runs he’s given up since April.

[14] Also, his K/9 has gone down because he’s pitching more innings, but his K% has gone up because he’s facing less batters overall.

as I noted in [15] he’s given up nearly half his non-April runs in two starts, he’s also given up at least half his runs (14 HR against 29 runs, I’d have to check the actual box scores to get finer info) on HRs which isn’t surprising given his HR rate, but still pretty crazy.

Also, given his batted ball profile the .273 BABIP might be reasonable.

[9] Thanks, Bubba!

[15] Well, that’s the way you want to do it.

Concentrate all your suck in a few games.  12-4 losses don’t hurt anymore than 5-4.

“Sure, but he could turn it around today (literally) and for the next 2 months be the effective pitcher he has been.  That’s the nature of ALL relief pitchers, even the elite ones.”

Are you saying we’ve been going through What’s Wrong With Cory Wade Week(WWWCW)?

[14] and [15] can’t both be right (about ERA).

[20] Well, if you’re not an idiot and don’t forget to multiply .413 (R/IP) by 9 you would definitely get 3.717 as an ERA.

5. It’s nothing compared to Roger Clemens standing in George’s box.

[21] I just did the game logs on BBRef and highlighted a group.  Prevents me from making math errors, though obviously if I want to do anything more advanced than BBRef already does I’m on my own.

don’t forget to multiply .413 (R/IP) by 9

Jack Morris used to pitch 10 inning complete games, so everyone should!

[23] I should really learn how to use BBRef.
