Yankees.com: Grandy’s homer fuels Yanks’ sweep at Atlanta

ATLANTA—The Yankees concluded a three-game sweep of the Braves on Wednesday night with a 3-2 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 48,938 at what amounted to Yankee Stadium South: Turner Field.

Hiroki Kuroda pitched six innings of two-run, nine-hit ball for the win, evening his record to 5-5, and Curtis Granderson provided the big blow—a two-run homer in the sixth off Tim Hudson that offset a two-run blast the previous half-inning by Brian McCann.

It was a pretty tense game, with almost every swing having the potential to change the outcome, but the Yankees’ pitchers were able to work their way out of the trouble they put themselves in just about every time to hold on for the win.  Every time McCann came up I was expecting a HR, but thankfully it only happened once.

Yay sweep!

I could get used to this interleague thing.  The Yankees even did one of them double-switch thingys tonight.  What a complex and fascinating aspect to the game….

Yep.  Nothing screams strategy like maneuvering your lineup to get DeWayne Wise to hit before the pitcher.

National League Baseball is great for their souls are tasty to Pinstripe chompers.

Also, do you think Hal is listening to Suzyn talk about how good the bullpen is without joba/robertson/mo? Maybe this will prevent some shitty bullpen deals in the future

Hal is listening ...and thinking: it’s all because I went and got Soriano! I should do that again, and again, and again…

Told you guys.  I said yesterday, I’m a believer now.

Bring the brooms to Washington!

The YANKEE brooms.

We dodge the Nats wunderkind aftef dodging Dickey and Braves two best.  Selig goofed.

ATL is coming to visit next week and whoever beat the Sox will be back there, too.

History should repeat itself, right?

I sure do love it when the Yankees win multiple games in a row!

And yes, it is nice not to have to face Strasburg.

Matt Cain threw a perfect game

Wow.  Year of the pitcher, eh?

I can’t decide if I like the Giants or hate them.

Has there ever been two perfect games in a single season before?

It sort of diminishes the accomplishment the more frequently it occurs.

22 is still pretty rare.  And is an accomplishment that has no comparable at all in other sports.

Five in the last four seasons just seems weird, though, doesn’t it?

But yeah, there’s nothing quite like a perfect game. I certainly do agree with that.

It seemed odd to me that Kay wasn’t sure who would get sent down when Robertson returns. Of course it will be Phelps, right? He never pitches!

It would be funny if Kay were sent down and Phelps took over the booth.

[13]  Sure, but it’s still a crazy anomaly.  Cone and Wells (and Mussina nearly) had them in one of the (THE?) highest scoring eras ever.  Bob Gibson never had a perfect game despite being filthy, and the mound, and the era.  Dallas Braden is a POS and he had one.  It’s 72% luck, 28% talent, but what a 28%.

Also, Kenny Rogers!?, who is is a pustule on the ass of baseball.  But still, I remember him pitching a no-hitter through I think 7 in 1996, and getting jazzed because Doc had already had his, and then he walked about 19 of the other guys.

Five in the last four seasons just seems weird, though, doesn’t it?

Coincides with the end of The Steroid Era.

[11] 2010 had two, and last (and only) time before that was 1880.  But it had been since 2004 before then.  Still very rare, and I think more coincidence than anything.  Though I also looked and there have been 21 no hitters (not all CG by starter, several included bullpen help) since start of 2009, and 21 total the prior 10 years.  So…

[18] I think 2009 forward is more marking when they started testing for amphetemines, no?  My girlfriend and I were talking this morning, and I mentioned there were a number of other factors too.  Pretty sure Tom Tango (and others) have done some research and the biggest factor is still change in strikezone size…but can’t completely rule out stuff like amphetemine use.
