Yankees.com: CC stifles Blue Jays in victorious return from DL

NEW YORK—CC Sabathia seemed like he’d never been away from the Yankees’ rotation, hurling six scoreless innings to lead his club to a 6-1 victory over the Blue Jays on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.

Andruw Jones crushed a three-run homer off Brett Cecil in the second inning, supporting the big lefty’s return from the disabled list and powering New York’s eighth victory in its last 10 games.

Sabathia’s probably the most important player on the Yankees now, so it was nice to see him looking like vintage CC.  He probably could have gone nine if he wasn’t coming off a long layoff, but there was no sense pushing it tonight.  I’ll have to check the velocity numbers, but he seemed to have his best fastball of the year in this game.

Jones and Raul Ibanez appear to be making their case that the Yankees don’t need to get a LF.  I am onboard with that.

Wisey? Really Joe?

CC’s fastball command looked the best it’s been in a while. Hopefully the time off on the DL has set him up nicely for the now-standard-late-summer-stretch-run.

I guess DeWayney would just be silly.

[3]
He should have gone for it.

The standings in the AL East are mighty pleasing to the eye right now.  All complaining aside, it’s a pleasure to root for this team.

[1]
If Girardi played for Girardi would he be Girardie or Girardy?

Joey’s a given.

But if the first two letters are ever the same, I drop them both and saythename like Bob, Bob drop the B’s Bo ob For Fred, Fred drop the F’s Fo red For Mary, Mary drop theM’sMo ary That’s the onlyrule that is contrary

Do you think he called Bernie Williams Bernie-ey?

I think I see a young Torre doing a mean mash potato

What did he call the author of somewhere i have never travelled?

If Stanley Tucci were a Yankee his nickname would be, counter-intuitively, Toocher.

12 Touche`  UJD.  Mad Magazine once wrote if Kitty Kallen married Conway Twitty she would be Kitty Twitty.

I am not onboard with this LF. No one is as good as they look when going well, or as bad as they look when going poorly. Right now Jones is on fire and Raul is not making a fool of himself in the field. But both these may end in August and it will be too late.

Big Fan-ny

Don’t have a problem with Jones, but Ibanez can’t field at all and gets on base less than Russel Martin.

[15, 16] Seriously. This team should have an all star at every position.

[15], [16]

Right there with you.

Ibanez has hit some key dingers, which is great, but he also brings terrible OBP, a fair number of GIDPs, defensive inability.  All in all, I’m not a fan.

It could certainly be worse, I know.  But this is not a strength (which is what happens when your starting LFer, a ~4 win player, gets hurt, I guess).

[15 & 16] As always…where do you see an upgrade and what are you willing to pay for it?  If KC were to offer Alex Gordon for Ramiro Pena I’d do it in a minute…if Gordon costs Banuelos, Williams, and Sanchez then I wouldn’t do it.

Everybody who wants to cut Ibanez loose, ain’t gonna happen,  who should Cash bring in past/future instead?

Ah, there’s the rub.

I don’t know what all is out there, but it doesn’t seem likely to be much (and the cost will likely be jacked up).  Branyan (even if healthy) is likely just wishcasting by me.

So, in the end, all I’m saying it’s a spot that isn’t a strength and I don’t like it (aka complaining).  Much like I could say about the catcher position.  Similiarly, that’s another spot you can look at and say “well, where are you going to find an upgrade, and at what cost?”  And I’ll grant that point as well.

[21] Yeah, I’m certainly not against upgrading LF, especially if that also solves the RF problem for next year (or further).  As long as the cost is appropriate.  E.g. Gordon I’d probably be okay with one of the 3 I mention in [19], plus some other pieces.  KC would probably want more of course.  At the same time, I don’t think LF is a big enough weakness that it NEEDS to be upgraded.

Catcher Martin will likely be better.  But other than that no, aren’t many upgrades available.  Maybe Romine later in year would be an upgrade over Stewart…enough that he could allow Martin more time off which may help improve Martin’s performance as well.
