Yankees.com: After honoring Fenway, Yanks pound Sox

Honoring the oldest operating facility in the big leagues, Boston was attired in replicas of what the club would have worn on April 20, 1912, as the gates along Yawkey Way opened, just five days after the sinking of the Titanic.

The Red Sox won that opening game, 7-6, in 11 innings, but behind a 15th consecutive winning decision from right-hander Ivan Nova and the Yankees’ offensive power, New York spoiled any chances of a historic reprisal early.

Dustin Pedroia dropped a Derek Jeter popup that led to an unearned first-inning run before Swisher and Chavez teed off on Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz for solo homers in the second inning.

Chavez added a second homer in the fourth frame off Buchholz, and Rodriguez slugged the 631st of his big league career over the Green Monster in the fifth, passing former Mariners teammate Ken Griffey Jr. for sole possession of fifth place on the all-time list.

I can’t wait to watch the replay of this one.

What a simply magnificent piece of writing! I’m just tearing up here.

EDIT: And more!

Boston was attired in replicas of what the club would have worn on April 20, 1912…

If they had played?  But they did play!  Obviously, back in the day, playing in uniforms or naked was a game-time decision.

I LOVE that the Yankees celebrated Fenway by treating it like the disgraceful bandbox that it is.

I can’t even get into the rest of that quote.  I’m afraid to look at the by-line of this article.

minor complaint… Russell Martin’s home run call. Would it be too much to ask him to change it to Russell Martin graduates! I would love that.

ok, obviously all of the home run calls suck.

[4]
Don’t get it.

Good game.  I had some fun.  We need volunteers for the rest of the weekend…

[7] Never mess with a streak. Sorry ‘bout that. You’re commited.

I know that embracing any uniform alteration is heresy for Yankee fans, but… I really like those 1912 uniforms. I wouldn’t mind the Yankees wearing them on the road, with numbers and possibly a regular navy cap.

[8] Please review all available information before making such a commitment.

[9] Somebody get me a stake.

nice to win at fenway in april….

BTW, how cool is Pedro Martinez?

that Who is Karim Garcia crack was awesome.

“The Red Sox won that opening game, 7-6, in 11 innings, but behind a 15th consecutive winning decision from right-hander Ivan Nova and the Yankees’ offensive power”

This is a terrible way to start a sentence.  “Behind”, “consecutive winning decision”, “offensive power” are awkward, and the arrangement of the clauses tripped me up.

Mad props btw to shaked for the liveblogging.  We had a doctor visit day with about four entirely empty hours and it was nice not to be guessing from gameday what was going on.

If the Angels do what they’re supposed to, we’ll slide into a piece of first place tonite. How cool would that be ?

Also, Nova at the top of the heap in the early CYA running.

Jaysus. A-Rod hit the effen snot outta that ball.

Hey, someone intrepid soul put my favorite baseball moment of all time up on YouTube. i’ll never forget that roar, nor the feeling that the entire stadium was going to collapse, but that I didn’t care because I coudln’t think of a better way to die.

Someone on BTF made a good point: did they play the Jurassic Park score during the ceremonies as a way to honor Carl Everett?

Also, you will never hear a noise like that at Yankee Stadium ever again.

[16] Thanks.  I hope it read well.  Glad to be of service.

[22] I just finished reading it. Well done son. Good stuff.

With Pettitte just finishing 5 IP and Pineda scheduled to pitch 2 shortly who is ready first?

[24] The question is who goes back on the DL first.

Great win, but for me the best part was sterling ranting about the music during the ceremony: “it’s like a harpist at brunch in a really expensive hotel.”. Yup, that’s the class level I associate with the Red Sox.

By the way, what happened tp yup?

Also, I think I’m ready to embrace Nova without reservation.  And I know he’s ready for my tender caresses.

Fredo for Andy. Phil is on the bubble when that pinyata dude drops a stone or 3 and is able to break 92.

the Flyers blowing this series would be awesome.

[27] I imagine so.

[21] This is true. In that regard, I’d like to repost a post that, I think, was lost at the end of a previous thread (so sue me):

If they wanted to preserve any mojo, they should have trucked the topsoil across the street instead of selling it in coke vials.

If they wanted to preserve any mojo, they shouldn’t have reangled the Stadium and introduced a moat to make sure the fans weren’t anywhere near the game.

But my favorite seats—upper deck behind the plate—were GREAT.

I had those seats - RIGHT behind home plate, on the stadium divider, two rows from the front of the upper deck (because view from the seats ahead of us were obstructed by the guard rail.
FGas, you are so right - best seats in the house.  Had them for 20+ years.  Would you think they’d show some loyalty - or screw us out of them when they moved to the new Stadium? Yes, you’re right.  No seats anymore.

And all the recent posts are right - the remodeled version of YS was just a different stadium, with a fraction of the charm and interest, and I had little problem losing it on those grounds. I was at the last game in OYS, 1st in NYS.  But even the remodeled stadium had the key thing - fans on top of the field.  Which is probably the most important thing.

[28] Phuck you my friend.

[30] Phriend? Phine Pheathered?

If they wanted to preserve any mojo, they shouldn’t have reangled the Stadium and introduced a moat to make sure the fans weren’t anywhere near the game.

Yes, anything they could have done to make the opponents feel like they were playing inside a commercial rock crusher should have been done.

I asked about yup a while back. Don and yup- I fear they will never come back.

Arod on Nova:

“He’s a monster,” Alex Rodriguez said. “I don’t know when people are going to realize that. He is a fantastic pitcher. He has four-plus pitches. All four pitches are above major league average. And his velocity, he threw a pitch today that was 96. All he knows how to do is win. He’s very composed. He works extremely hard. And he’s turning the corner, big time.”

Not seeing yup on the member list - I seem to recall him switching to “nope”, or joking about it.  Maybe he’s running silent under a new moniker?

Yup is alive and well. He chose to run a marathon in NJ rather than attend the original Nerdfest. Healthier choice no?  Don is John Heyman.

Thanks for the liveblog, shaked.  I…did not know game was in the afternoon, thus did not keep up.  Would have missed it at work, anyway.  Ah well.  Throwback unis cool?  Uncool?  Meh?

The players were encouraged to actually wear the stirrups, so that was a plus, but the Yankee road uniform wasn’t too different aesthetically. I liked the Red Sox uniforms though, mostly white with red accents.
