WSJ: Triple-A Scranton Yankees will wander without home
The Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees will play all 144 games of their International League season on the road, forced out of PNC Field because of a stadium renovation. Instead, they’ll have 37 “home” games in Rochester, N.Y., with the rest scattered about in Batavia, Buffalo and Syracuse, N.Y., along with Allentown, Pa., and Pawtucket, R.I.
They’re even adopting a temporary name, the Empire State Yankees. Might as well call them the Boys of Somewhere.
“Every baseball team has a home base. It’s going to be a little weird just not having one,” said 27-year-old infielder Kevin Russo, embarking on his fourth season with the team. “Friends, family, girlfriend, they all don’t really understand. Even I don’t understand it.”
I wonder how this situation might impact the players. With guys like Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances likely on the team I suppose it gives Yankee fans scattered around New York State more chances to see them.

Now they will know how the Jews felt for 2000 years.
And how the Roma still feel.

[2] The AAA team is going to be stealing and eating babies too?
Tune in on the MLB network to watch the Red Sox expand their Grapefruit League lead.
You can predict baseball?
[1, 3]
Q. Why did the Scranton Yankees wander for an entire season?
A. Someone dropped a quarter.
Taking care of babies has driven Frog quite insane.
[6] What’s your excuse?
Playing for the late 80s/early 90s Yankees, I assume.
[2] My glancing familiarity with the Roma philosophy suggests they wouldn’t want a home.
[5] Someone dropped a quarter at the corner but there’s light under the moon.

[9] Some of that may be due to centuries of persecution, varying from mere exclusion to focused violence and, at times, genocide.
You think it’s tough being a Jew or Roma, try being a Spiders fan. Not only don’t we have a homeland, we don’t have a team and all our players are long dead. Persecuted to this day, if not this thread.
I’m not complaining.
And if you haven’t heard, next year could be in danger too. It’s all politics, and part of it is because some current county councilors don’t like the (retired) councilor that negotiated the deal to bring the Yankees here, and are trying to show how tough they are.
Essentially, the Yankees want to buy the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre franchise from Luzerne/Lackawana counties. The purchase price would be roughly $20M I believe. That and $15M in federal funds earmarked for the stadium renovation - if I understand correctly, used for the stadium or returned to Washington - will pay for the $35M in renovations. Which is probably more now since they haven’t actually started yet (my girlfriend’s office overlooks the stadium). In exchange for the sale, the Yankees will also sign a 30-year lease starting in 2015.
The Lackawanna council - also illegally excluding the Luzerne council who own 50% of the team - feels they should still own the Yankees, are questioning the wisdom of using the funds for stadium renovation (though they can’t be used anywhere else), and also feel that they should pick the team name, not the Yankees. They are refusing to start the renovations until they come to a deal with the Yankees. IDK what kind of deal they’re looking for at this point…but if they don’t start the renovations soon, 2013 is in danger. Current agreement expires after 2014.
So right now, I may be getting Yankee games in a modern AAA stadium from 2013-2044. Or I may never see a SWB Yankee game again. /endrant
[9] You’re sure you’re not thinking of the Romanichal, the Kale, the Travelers, or the Pavees?
I don’t know anything about the pikeys, but I do not think playing a whole season on the road is going to be good for the team or the development of the players.
Maybe their road splits will improve.
I’m stuck going to Mets spring training this weekend for what might be the worst bachelor party of all time. I wonder how many guys on the Mets could play for the Upstate Wanderers.

[15] Away and “sort of home” splits will get confusing.
[16] It actually will be interesting to see if there’s a difference between the two.
[13] Do you have a particular bit of info in mind? I’ve simply not heard of any Roma interest in fixed domiciles in a fixed homeland made up of Romani - exactly the opposite - but, like I said, glancing.
