WaPo: Boswell: Phillies’ toughest opponent might be Father Time
Baseball must despise a sure thing. The Phils are still a sane pick to be in the World Series. But they also might not even win their own division. With a speed that is chilling, the gap between the Phils and the rest of the NL East — much less all of baseball — has shrunk to the point where this season, or very soon, the young, rising Braves, Nationals and Marlins, or all three of them, may be on the Phils’ aging heels.
I want to take a trip down memory lane.
“Texas probably finished second to be honest with you. Just as far as the quality of the team and the chance to win a World Series ring, I think they’re a better team. That’s just my opinion. The Yankees can do anything at any moment to improve and they’re not afraid to go do things. That was part of the decision making process too,
Durp.
but I felt like with what the Red Sox had done and it seems like some of the Yankee guys are getting older, but I liked the Rangers.”
Double durp.

Quadruple durp.

In reference to the last thread, I’m very annoyed Pettitte is coming back. Not because I don’t believe in the fallacy of “too much pitching.” But because Girardi now has another old dude he played with at his disposal. When it comes to October, I can see Girardi employing some crazy rationale to get Pettitte two starts in a series:
“Well, I was sitting on the bench in 1996 at Fulton County Stadium, you have to remember. And Jimmy Leyritz was calling a heckuva game. But the fire in Pettitte’s eyes, and I come back to that…that fire in his eyes and, uh, just the pure heart. Andy’s a horse who’s a proven winner for almost 20 years in the Major Leagues, and you don’t get that every day. So we think the short rotation again is the way to go.”
Meanwhile Pineda will have an ERA+ miles better and be relegated to Game 4 start (if team is ahead) plus mop-up duty.
If Pettitte’s return is in any appreciable way a bad thing, it almost certainly means this pitching roster will have been largely healthy.
So I don’t see much point in fretting about it.
[3] Not fretting. There are already players on the roster whom I actually loathe (Raul Ibanez). I just see Girardi having a rope that’s way too long with this guy.
[0] Yeah, the Since the CAIRO projections include Cliff Lee for Philly, the gap would probably be even larger if you added him to the other teams. Obviously, roster construction would have wound up different if he had gone to Texas or NY, but for simplicity I’m assuming he projects better than whoever the teams picked up instead of him.
oof. Hall just took one to the dome.
I decided to get drunk before gametime, and since I’m slowing down with age, it took me a little longer and I missed the start. Which is annoying, but not as annoying as coming in to find Nova has already pitched the cycle. Single, double, homer plead down to the lesser charge of triple, homer.
[3] is just batshit crazy. Or not. I’ll wait until SG tells us whether it is or it isn’t.
[1] Is the literarry prowess that is the draw that which is this ehm….
OW ! Buck hates Bill Hall.
Gardner is pretty badass.
[3] is just batshit crazy. Or not. I’ll wait until SG tells us whether it is or it isn’t.
[3] seems very measured and well-reasoned to me. Which probably makes it batshit crazy relative to this site. But I’m guessing you mean [2].
I wouldn’t discount the idea that Girardi will be more likely to trust Pettitte. I do think it’s highly unlikely that you’ll see a scenario where he’s starting over a clearly better option in the postseason.
O’s talking headtard unable to distinguish between “averse” and “adverse”.
Mute point, I guess.
But I’m guessing you mean [2].
Yes, absolutely.
To be honest, I just picked a number at random. But on further review, it seems to me that [2] is batshit crazy on the simple grounds of “Andy’s a horse”, whereas Pettitte is clearly more Caprine than Equine.
[10] Whoever this is in the booth with Thorne is as adroit as Flaherty and as articulate as Stallone.
Why hasn’t Nova been DFA’d yet?
[12] At least he doesn’t have the giggling, squeeky voice of Paulie “My Nards Haven’t Dropped Yet” O’Neill.
Get Betances in to throw some retaliation.
On the bright side, Mason Williams getting caught stealing preserves the ever dangerous Rango The Human Iguana’s plate appearance.
[8] TSBGFC asks, how so?
[17] Threw to first to double up the runner on a charging catch.
I know it’s ST and performance sorta doesn’t mean anything. Players are trying stuff out, getting into shape, etc.
That said, WTF is Rango working on ? Hitting with his eyes shut and using The Force ? He looks completely lost at the plate. Not a good sign from your DH.
[18] Ta.
Not a good sign from your DH.
Maybe Iganez, or I-Gone-yez, is an apt name for him after all. We should have a contest to guess the date of his DFA.
Watching that replay, at one point they had 3 runners on the basepath between 2nd and 3rd.
Maybe Andy did bring Jorge back with him.
[21] When’s the next roster contraction ?
Edit: ‘cause I pick that day.
HARD contact from the DH spot ! At last ! Go Rango !
What ? Gardner ? No he was in Center…oh, GAR-ner. Yeah but, well, did Rango tire himself out walking between home plate and the dugout three times in the same day ? Or is there some sort of matchup thing going on, where he historically owns Hinton ?
Yeah, that must be it. Nothing left to prove.
I think Matt Wieters is going to have a big year.
