THT: 10th anniversary: Giambi’s walk-off slam

So far, Giambi had been a complete non-factor. He had an early double and an extra-inning single, but neither safety led to any runs. After 13 frames, he was 2-for-5 on the day. Not bad, but nothing memorable.

The 14th would be very memorable. First, Minnesota broke the deadlock in the top of the inning. Behind four singles, a walk, and an error, Minnesota scored thrice to seemingly ice the game with a 12-9 lead.

However, the Yankees weren’t about to give up. In the bottom of the frame, three of the first four Yankees reached base, loading them up with just one out.

With the bases loaded, Giambi strode to the plate with the game on the line. He didn’t make anyone wait, bashing the first pitch out of the park for a game-winning, walk-off grand slam.

I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since this game, one of the best Yankee games in my memory.

This numbers in the top 3 of games I’ve been lucky enough to be at…my buddies and I were in the upper deck, under the awning to stay out of the rain.  After Minnesota scored all of the runs, we started walking down…each tier down, the Yanks seemed to have another baserunner.  By the time we got all the way downstairs, Bernie was drawing his walk.  We walked out just behind home plate and stood in the aisle.  I remember seeing Giambi in the on-deck circle…holding the bat out in front of him, he took a deep breath and blew it out, walked up to the plate.  I’m pretty sure it was the first pitch he saw…deposited deep to right center.  It was so late…we still went to Stan’s for a couple of beers, we were so giddy.

The other two best games I’ve been at are the 2001 WS game with Tino’s game tying home run off Kim, and Jeter’s walk off homer, and the 2004 extra inning affair against the Sox with Jeter’s face-plant-into-the-seats catch and A-Rod’s incredible force-out throw over the shoulder bases-loaded DP.  Also in consideration is the Clemens/Pedro matchup I saw, I think in ‘99, where Clemens fanned 13 I think, and Pedro 9…except Trot Nixon hit a two run shot off Clemens in the top of the 9th to put them up 2-1, which Pedro made hold up in the bottom.

Hell, I’d take 41 year old Giambi at first this year.

The biggest WPA shift possible in a single AB.

Edit:
[1] - I was there as well.  It was the year before I gave up my seasons tickets in the bleachers.

Wouldn’t it be a hair lower than if there were two outs?

You guys make me feel like such a dilettante.  I didn’t even remember that Vander Wal played for the Yankees.

[4] - I pulled a Pettitte and mis-remembered.  I thought there were two outs.

I was at the game too.  We had great seats, behind first base close to the field, from someone’s banker buddy.  By the 11th we were wet and freezing, so went to Stan’s to drink and stay dry.  So I actually saw Giambi’s home run on TV—but it was still one of the best Yankee moments I “saw in person.”

Ah, the big lug.  I miss the “spavined crab” at this point.  Tex is doing a all-glove, no-hit SS impression over there.

I remember when the Yankees got Vander Wal (cue up that horrible song by the early-90s Beatles imitators).  Because I asked a friend of mine, a Giants fan in San Francisco, whether he could play a decent right field.  My friend looked at me, shrugged, and said, he’s a notch up from Glenallen Hill.  I think I visibly shuddered.

So then I decided that the Yankees absolutely needed to sign Gabe Kapler, who I believe had been DFA.  (I could look this up but that would smack of effort.)  I argued and argued with friends of mine about whey this was important.

The things I do for love.

I was at Game 4 of the 2001 WS, as well as the Pedro-Clemens matchup.  Two of the best games I ever saw at the old stadium. Memories…

That Pedro-Clemens game ended, IIRC, with a Bernie Williams flyball that Nixon caught with his back to the wall in right.  Woulda been a walk-off 3-run job, I think.

That was a great game.

I think the bases were loaded.

EDIT: We were both right, sort of: Bernie did hit a deep fly to right with two on, but it was only the second out.  Then Posada was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Tino grounded out.
