The Good News Is That Brett Gardner Does, Indeed, Still Have an Elbow…

From Andrew Marchand at ESPN New York:

New York Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner, who has played just nine games all season, won’t return for at least another two-and-a-half weeks, general Brian Cashman told ESPNNewYork.com.

“The earliest you will see him is the 27th of the July at the major league level,” Cashman said Tuesday.

Gardner has been sidelined with a right elbow strain, an injury he suffered while diving for a ball in mid-April. After the initial diagnosis, the Yankees had hoped Gardner would be back in two weeks.

Gardner made it to minor league rehab games before having to be shut down again. After going to see elbow specialists, the hope was that Gardner would return shortly after the All-Star break.

The best-case scenario now is that the speedy Gardner will be in a Yankee uniform toward the end of the month.

“He is swinging off of a tee,” Cashman said. “He’s been fine but as you know, his first two outings that’s what he did. He was fine until he got all the way through a major league rehab. There is going to be a lot of, ‘He’s fine,’ up until he is playing in rehab games.”

The hitting equivalent of the flat mound squad just has to be the tee ball squad, right?

The bad news is that to save it they had to transplant it to his head.

He isn’t coming back, ever, is he?  I mean he may get back to the bigs, but it won’t last.

He’ll be fodder for “what might have been” articles 2, 5, 25, and 50 years from now.

Was that Don, I mean the real Don, posting the other day?  It’s not possible to double up on usernames, right?  Don: Hi.

[4] You can’t double-up on usernames, unless the account is dropped or he changed his username. So, if Don became “El Supremo”, then someone else could become “Don”.

Can I be El Supremo, please, please?

Best case 7/27.  What year?

Crikey - guys like Gardner really get screwed by the system.

Total salary to date $1.4m and more than 10 WAR. If his injury is career threatening its pretty unfair.

So I can be fgasparini?

[8] Most players do.  Look at the NFL - the average career for an NFL running back is a little over 2 1/2 seasons.  These guys get drafted, take a beating for a few years until they can’t run anymore and then they’re cut.  A very small percentage ever make big money.

Under the current CBA, you have to have 4 years in to be an unrestricted free agent.  The average NFL player lasts 3.3 years.  Must just be a coincidence.  And they added a rookie salary cap.  They come in, play for whatever the league gives them, and then they’re replaced by the new cohort of young college players with good knees.  For a $9 billion/year enterprise, the guys that take the biggest beatings typically get the smallest cut of the pie.

Trading for an OF under control for at least 2014 should be the goal of this team in the trade deadline.

And until Gardner steps foot into the batter’s box in the major leagues, The Shockmaster is the LFer of the future.

I wonder if Gardner’s injury does influence the thinking regarding Granderson/Swisher and the next great Yankee OF.  He doesn’t become a FA until 2015, which means that he could be a cheaper replacement for Granderson in CF in 2014 if they can find a LFer.  But if Brett gets an elbow-dectomy, then he won’t be playing any CF.

I saw this too… it doesn’t seem to be anything new, though.  There have been no further “setbacks.”  It’s just Cashman explaining the schedule.

Was that Don, I mean the real Don, posting the other day?

Indeed it was.

And until Gardner steps foot into the batter’s box in the major leagues, The Shockmaster is the LFer of the future.

I think we’re going to be seeing a bit more of Andruw Jones in LF, vs. RHP and LHP.

[11] I think they’d be very happy to do that.  At the same time, most of those players who are available would probably be very, very expensive.  And some of the Yankees’s key chips that they could have used for a trade are either hurt (Banuelos, Romine) or their trade value is almost non-existent (Betances).  So the pieces that have value are far away from majors, and will need to package more than one.  E.g. getting Justin Upton may cost Williams AND Austin AND some other pieces.  Is that worth it?  Maybe, maybe not.  Just don’t be expecting to be able to get cheap, young, and good.

Now, one player who *may* fit that criteria is Dominic Brown.  Phillies seem to not value him.  His numbers have taken a step back but it’s possible it is because the Phillies are jerking him around.  Perhaps they’d be willing to trade him for a modest package - say Adam Warren and maybe David Adams.  He’s higher risk since he hasn’t succeeded in the majors and has taken a step back.  But at only 24, has the upside of being a 3-4 WAR player for several years while very cheap, and the cost may be minimal.

I detect the El Supremo at the room at the top of the stairs.

The only good thing about these off days is that it extends the length of time the Yankees hold the best record in baseball.

Kim Jong Il took El Supremo

[9] That’s really up to you at this point.

[8] That’s what Gardner gets for going all-grit-out on a single play. He needs to pace himself.

[9] Biographers of the future beg you not to.
