If the Yankees needs to free up a 40 man roster spot any time soon, they should just designate Tanaka for assignment.

You’re afraid to show us the WAR anymore, aren’t you ?

Not a fan that their catcher’s OPS is higher than the Yankees’ catcher’s OPS.

By the way, is Romine hurt? I heard that he might be more than just a little banged up, which would be a major problem since Higashioka is on the MiL DL right now.

Our line up beats theirs in 7 out of 9 slots. Release headley!

It is amazing that Headley is out-slugging and getting on base more than the Yankees’ first baseman. Austin can’t get here fast enough. What’s great about the Austin/Ref trade-off is that it doesn’t mess with the roster composition at all.

If the Yankees DFA Tanaka I bet he goes unclaimed.

[4] Since the Yankees chose to send Austin to AAA, I would guess that Ref and Carter will stick around until Bird returns.

I know Bird is rehabbing, but is he really that close to returning? I thought it was just extended rehab.

I shouldn’t, but I like Carter for some reason. I am hoping he heats up and hits a few out.

Carter made a lot of sense for a bench bat, with his salary being so low (and he’s actually still controllable through arbitration next season, right?). Being able to bring him in to pinch-hit if they need a big home run is helpful for the team.

[9] Except when he is only hitting tower pop ups to second, it’s not that helpful.

Doom in the gloom.

[9]  Yes, but he’s likely to get a big arb payday, which is the reason he was released in the first place.

Of course if he keeps up this year’s performance, it’ll lessen the arb award, but if he continues like this he’s destined for the KBO.

ETA, he was non-tendered.

Bird is playing in his sixth rehab game tonight. Have to imagine he’ll be back soon, right?

Isn’t the fact that they haven’t moved Bird past A ball unlike Austin who had no ST and moved to Scranton after only 5 games at AA a sign that they don’t think Bird is near ready?

I dunno, maybe they want to keep him near the training/medical facilities in Tampa just in case?

That was the impression that I was working under, yeah.

I have no idea. I just think it’s weird they sent Austin to AAA (he’s raked in his rehab assignment) when they are playing Carter and Refsnyder at 1B.

Oh no, I believe you’re probably right (that they know Bird is returning soon, so why screw with Austin?), I was just thinking that Bird wasn’t that close. It appears as though I was mistaken. smile

[14] Bird’s rehab is moving to AAA on Thursday.

Vegas has it pick-em Tanaka doesn’t get out of the 3rd.

IMHO Austin is better than Ref.  I am surprised that the team isn’t moving to replace Ref with Austin.

Odds dropping.

What’s on TCM now? HBO?

Should carter have thrown home? I think so

That was a really terrible call for how emphatic it was.

Low strike zone tonight

Given Hixie’s OBP why isn’t he hitting 2nd?

I’m gonna be so tight if Tanak gets rocked by the Sox.

That is all.

Hixie should not be batting 6th given the year he’s having (very much to my astonishment).

Jog it on home, Hixie.

Man on 3rd, 1 out, Chase and Carter up. What’s the odds?

Super-hard trivia question - can you name the 10 catchers who made the All-Star team as Yankees? At least one from each decade except the 1980s (the All-Star Game began in 1933).

At least he’s gotten the pitch count up.

Oh, Chasey Headleyey.

“A very hittable pitch” Paulie says. Hopeless Chase.

Maybe for the time being Chasened needs to platoon with TOE.

Crazy game SWB v. Rochester. Rochester starter has 9 K’s through 3 @59 pitches. Chance Adams has 5 K’s through 3 @44 pitches.  Three innings, combined 14 K’s. Save it for the summer.

I can only imagine how many takes it took just to get Altuve to get out “Extra Strength Five Hour Energy” period.

It’s pretty rough to make guys whose first language is not English be pitch men where they have to say somewhat complicated stuff.

Man, a lot of teams sure do give Judge the royal treatment.

[32]  Berra, Dickey, Posada, Munson, Girardi, Howard…that’s all I got.

Wait who was that guy who was on the Yankees, all hit no catch, ended up on the Red Sox and George traded the farm to get him back for 40 uninspiring games?  That guy.  Matt something?

Johnny Blanchard?

Doom in the gloom.

[42] You forgot Sal Fasano.

WTF is with Tanaka? This is so troubling.

43 Nokes

Mike Stanley.

Have you ever seen a pitcher get this bad so quickly from one year to the next? Even bad CC wasn’t nearly this bad.

Anybody know what pitches those homers were on?

[48]  No, I was thinking of Mike Stanley.

Yankees have some good players but without Tanaka and deadwood at 1B and 3B they’re not going anywhere but home in October.

Meanwhile Bird not exactly dominating A ball.

Berra, Dickey, Posada, Munson, Girardi, Howard

Yes to all of them except for Girardi.

And yes to Stanley. No to Blanchard.

I pinch hit for Headley here.

Two on, one out Chaste and Carter up.

56 Yep.

The Yankees have the distinction of being the only team (I don’t know if this is necessarily true that they were the only one that this happened to, but come on, it HAS to be true) of having TWO catchers make the All-Star Game…in a single year! Yes, one year, the AL managers decided to take the Yankee BACK-UP catcher over every other starting catcher in the American League. So that’s a hint as to who one of the guys is.

Headley, I’ve had enough.

Cone and Paulie are my favorite team.  Paulie know hitting.

God that was so fucking predictable.  The Yanks would do better with Tanaka at 3rd and Headley pitching.

Yogi, Elston.

Brutal. It was so predictable I kind of didn’t expect it.

Brutal. It was so predictable I kind of didn’t expect it.

[64]  Yeah, but I already said Berra and Howard.  The Yankees carried three catchers in those days, thinking one of them must have had a great year?  I’m assuming Howard went after Berra was gone.

It’s past time for Binder to at least sit Chastened against LHP or make a trade. Gleyber’s not close to ready.

[64]  Yeah, but I already said Berra and Howard.  The Yankees carried three catchers in those days, thinking one of them must have had a great year?  I’m assuming Howard went after Berra was gone.

Oh, never mind, I guess it happened more often than I thought, because I wasn’t referring to Berra/Howard. So I guess it happens a few times when teams had two good catchers.

Beatles trivia name the 3 musicians who’s wax likenesses are on the cover of Sargeant Pepper.

Tanaka, I’ve had enough.

Batting practice Tanaka.

I was about to say that this was starting to look like a reasonably encouraging start by Tanaka. Not dominant, but at least passable. But no. He’s broken as hell.

Only our old friend Bart has a worse era than Tanaka.

Tanaka’s eclipsing bad Moose and bad CC in awfulness.

Woulda been nice to still have 2 on for that Chaste.

The really annoying thing is that Pomeranz has not been good at all and will be out of the game after just five innings. So this game was right there for the taking.

Bidding war between Yankees and townies for Moustakas?

Pomeranz over 120 pitches.  Sox must really fear their middle relief.

Carter now with a higher OPS than Chaste who has a 404! OPS against LHP. TOE needs those ABs for the time being.

A performance change this stark has to have a concrete reason, right?
And how long are they going to pretend it’s just a flesh wound and just keep trotting him out there to get pummelled?

A performance change this stark has to have a concrete reason, right?

I THINK so, but maybe not. I really dunno.

He still throws hard enough, and a drop in velocity is a really strong indicator of injury.  Maybe he’s just got a mild case of the yips.

I’d say it’s about time for a great comeback win

[82] His curious sprinkling of the occasional great start into the mix makes me think it’s mechanical and not health-related. Like he’s sometimes tipping pitches, or just somehow getting his command all wrong and leaving tons of splitters in the middle.

I mean, I don’t believe he’s just bad now, or that the league suddenly figured him out. It seems like he has to be able to sort it out eventually.

It’s ridiculous how they’re clustering the scoring opportunities for Headley.

I was thinking tipping pitches.

Something’s wrong with my mouseboard, apparently.

It’s got the Tanakas

They shoot Tanaka’s, don’t they?

Chance Adams 6 IP 3 H 3 ER 4 BB 7 K.

Sanchez being an average hitter is not funny

Honestly, besides Tanaka’s shittiness, this game hasn’t been all that bad. They’re really a scrappy team. I like that they don’t give up. Tanaka’s shittiness IS a real pain in the ass, of course, don’t get me wrong. Just saying that these series aren’t as depressing as they used to be.

And of course Tanaka is just ruining everything for this team. They should just take an MRI and DL him for 10 days even if he is perfect. He needs a break of sucking this hard, he is used to dominate and win most of the games he has started in his career, this must be a real shocker for him.

[93] Two HR’s, next day three lines drives, at least 2 caught, then Girardo sits him the next day, instead of using him at DH. Sometimes that plays with a young players mind.

They should take this as a chance to stretch Green and make him Tanaka’s replacement next time up. Even if I am positive that he is a bullpen arm he has been too good not to try him as a starter instead of the struggling Tanaka

OTOH losing to the Townies is just different, it’s always depressing and more now that the games are meaningful again. Here comes the 8th and then Kimbrel and game over.

94Besides Tanaka’s extreme shitiness and Chaste’s failure to handle eminently hittable pitches the game was so so.  Goodbye first place festival 6/8/17.  It was fun.

I’m sure Headley will come through this time.

Clutch Didi! He knew that would happen.
