If David Price was five years older, two inches taller, 80 pounds heavier, threw three mph slower and had an ERA 1.24 runs higher, he’d be almost like CC Sabathia

I got to thinking about this during the rain delay. How about R.A. Dickey? 1 RA in 30.2 innings over his last 4 starts.

Take a look at his BR page sometime. I’d wager he has one of the most unusual career paths ever. Cup of coffee at 26 with the Rangers. Back up at 28. Bounced back and forth with so-so to bad results. Switched to the knuckler at 31 but it didn’t take. A full season in the Brewers system at 32. Signed a minor league deal with the Twins but the Mariners grabbed him as a Rule 5 pick. Still pretty bad, ties the record for most wild pitches in an inning. Goes back to the Twins on a minor league deal at 34, still can’t stick in the majors. Invited to Mets spring training at 35. Throws a one-hitter in the minors, called up a few weeks later. Since then he’s pitched about 464 major league innings of 2.97 ERA ball. He’ll be 38 this year but Wakefield pitched til he was 45.

Cone makes a compelling case for extra rest for SP. At least an extra day. Any team ever try a 6 man rotation? Or better yet, have a swing guy who can be a long man or gets skipped entirely when the extra day of rest comes naturally due to off days/rain outs. Maybe someone who wouldn’t be bothered by it and threw knuckleballs but was under-appreciated league-wide? (cough*R.A.Dickey*cough)

Sabathia had an 8 inning game against TB where he gave up 2 runs (both unearened).  2 runs nonetheless.  That was his best start.  He has two other 8 inning performances where he gave up 2 runs each.

Every other pitcher has one start or more that is better than CC’s best.  Nova last night, 1 run in 8; Pettitte has two starts with 0 runs, 7.1 IP & 8 IP; Kurodo has two starts with 0 runs in 8 IP, and one start with 1 run in 7IP; and freaking Hughes has a CG with 1 run, and a start of 7.2IP with 1 run.

Ipso Facto, CC is the #5 starter.

He deserves a bucket of wings.

Sabathia has been ok tonight. Nix misplayed two line drives and A-Rod made an error. Plus Zobrist’s single was a grounder with eyes. His location hasn’t been great, but bad luck has definitely been a factor.
