So who gets hurt today?  Cano or Granderson?

Apparently McGehee is under team control through 2014. That’s cool, at least.

Wait, what? Some GM actually decided to TRADE FOR Chad Qualls? WTF? Don’t they know he was probably going to be DFA when Joba comes back any way?

[4] AND, Brackman was apparently DFA’d by the Reds today!

“Brackman has spent the 2012 season in the Reds’ minor league system, posting a combined 6.80 ERA with 6.8 K/9 and 6.1 BB/9 in 49 innings at Class A and Triple-A.”

With those numbers, how can we resist? Go Cash go!

Having control over a player who stinks for three years isn’t really a selling point.

Some GM actually decided to TRADE FOR Chad Qualls?

Didn’t our GM do that this year also?

[4]Is he starting?

[6] Want to make sure I understand this: you think the return on Chad Qualls was too low?

I think they also got $250k for him.

[4]Is he starting?

Don’t start.

Is McGehee even going to be on the roster?  If so, who else do they send down to make room for him and Joba?

Good question. I guess they can send Eppley down tonight and then bring him up in a few days and send Pena down.

I think McGehee isn’t going to report until tomorrow so Joba takes Qualls place, and McGehee takes (I’m guessing) Pena’s place tomorrow.

Is it so certain that McGhee is on the ML roster?

[6] Want to make sure I understand this: you think the return on Chad Qualls was too low?

I would rather have an empty roster space for Qualls than a player with negative value.

I think McGehee isn’t going to report until tomorrow so Joba takes Qualls place, and McGehee takes (I’m guessing) Pena’s place tomorrow.

Oh, if they don’t have to make a move until tomorrow, then yeah, that’s definitely what will happen then.

[16] Does he really have negative value? I thought he’d be better than Pena to fill in for ARod. They can always non-tender him if he’s awful.

[19] - Yeah, he can’t be worse than Pena… can he?

[20] Runs Above Pena Level, which is better than Runs Above Nunez Level, I guess.

McGhee is going to start at first base tomorrow. Oh boy!

I would imagine that that is SG’s concern. Pena sucks, but he also is not someone that Girardi feels tempted to play every day. I think McGhee might be. I mean, again, the dude is starting at first base tomorrow!

By the way, I am totally pumped about Joba’s return tonight.

[Sound Lurch makes.]

[16] Well, BR has him at 0.1 WAR. Decent offensives splits against RHP, very limited sample. 1.5 seasons removed from a very productive year. We got that for Qualls. And $250k. I just don’t see the reason to complain. But, hey, I’m used to it.

[22] Sure until the secret plan to start Joba kicks in (the secret part is that he’ll be starting at 1B).

maybe With Joba back and Tex/Arod out (and Cano/Grandy slumping) we can lose some 1-0 games. We’ve lost enough 3-2 and 5-4 games recently; time to move the pain up a level.

[22] - Because Teix is hurt.

What’s the point of us having Cust/Branyan in AAA?

[30] Teix isn’t going on the DL, Branyan is injured, and Cust can’t play 1B or 3B.  I’m not sure how he would help.

They should be using Swish as the back up 1B anyway.

Is McGehee even going to be on the roster?  If so, who else do they send down to make room for him and Joba?

You’d have to get rid of like, 5, Penas to make room for just Joba. On the bench I mean. Dude’s ass is wide.

Roster wise I think it’s still one-for-one, tho.

[30] Prevents Boston from acquiring them to use against us.

Plus, when rosters expand and Grandy gets hurt, we’ll have an OF depth chart over 35 years old, three deep at every position.

Why is no one discussing how Boston got King Felix and Doc Halladay for Melancon?

Is Melancon going to be partitioned between the two teams, or are there organs to be named later in the deal?

[34] This…this is a joke, right ? Because it’s all too believable. That makes it cruel.

I think fangraphs nailed it with their analysis of the Qualls deal:

New York Yankees send RP Chad Qualls to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 3B Casey McGehee.

Yay early runs!

It’s my theory that Dumpster going to Texas has relaxed Cano so he can now knock runs in with RISP.
And Kruk and I are sticking to it.

Very nice start for a slumping offense.

That was one of the most crushed home runs by a Yankee batter that I have seen in some time. I mean, that went into the seats in like a few seconds. A rocket blast.

Vintage A-Rod, though, that dude crushed home runs every other game.

I love the famed Ichrio crouch. That dude is crazy nimble.

A surprising number of runs have been scored this inning game.

Ichiro tried to ground into a double play, but it did not work out.

Ichiro should have tried to score on the rundown. Pena isn’t driving him in.

“Pena doesn’t have an attitude about things.” Why the fuck would he have an attitude about things, Paulie?

I don’t suppose these jackasses could have done a bit of this yesterday?

[46] I thought Pena DID have an attitude about things, cocky with a greased-up hairdo, no? Not that I care…

I would imagine that that is SG’s concern. Pena sucks, but he also is not someone that Girardi feels tempted to play every day.

Right.  You know Pena can’t play so you avoid playing him as much as you can, which minimizes his impact.  You may think McGehee can play because he had a good year a few years ago, which means he’ll probably play a lot more than he deserves to if his performance over the last two years is more indicative of his talent level.

Do this exercise.  Look at the offensive numbers for the 2012 Pirates, and then realize that they willingly traded this guy.

I thought Pena DID have an attitude about things, cocky with a greased-up hairdo, no? Not that I care…

I don’t get the joke!

If it is not a joke, then no, Pena has always been a really quiet, humble guy who has been awful in the Majors, so the idea that we should be impressed that he doesn’t pull an attitude about being up for just a short period is bizarre to me.

By the way, since I’ve been spelling it wrong all day, it is McGehee. What an odd spelling.

Carlos Lee turned down trade here/NBC

What? What a tool.

Not cool Ivan.

We may be looking at a worst loss of the season candidate here.

Seriously, Nova? SERIOUSLY?

Can they just pull Nova and pitch Phelps the rest of the game until Joba comes in to pitch two innings?

I’m just happy Carlos Lee is saving the Yankees from their own stupidity.

Sure would have liked Nova to come out sharp tonight

I’m just happy Carlos Lee is saving the Yankees from their own stupidity.

Right? It is like the Dempster situation. The Rangers saved the Yankees from their own stupidity.

Last game I saw Nova pitch, he got rocked by Baltimore. Why the heck is he owned by Baltimore of all teams?

He looked so good in the first too.  WTF?

oh, Nova.

Yep, worst loss of the season. In-fucking-sanity.

Uhm, holy crap.

This is all SG’s fault.

...too late for Dempster?

under .500 by September

It’s cool, you guys. Chris McGehee will make all this right.

I know you have to preserve your bullpen, but occasionally your starters are just going to pitch like dogshit and not have it. I don’t like sticking with them on these occasions. Nova clearly doesn’t have anything this inning. Having him just plug away is just asking for trouble. Why not just pull him?

Fuck Nova.

Dumpster going to Texas made the offense relax, so it can hit now.
It apparently made Nova really, really nervous. “Why didn’t he want to come here and pitch with me?”

So how many innings can Phelps go tonight?  Has he been contracted back to two innings again?

My only solace is that I miscounted the score, so I thought that it was 8-5.

Effing Nova has turned into an effing pumpkin and Serling blew that call terribly never even an it is high.  Sounded like a long fly ball likely to be caught.  Get Dempster here now.

You know the Yanks aren’t scoring the rest of the game either and it’s gonna finish 7-5.

Except for giving up 7 runs last inning I thought Nova pitched pretty well tonight.

Yeah, time to panic?

What’s next in this progression:
0, 5, 7, ???

Dempster going to Texas has apparently relaxed Davis, as well.

If we win this game, it will be with a football score. Maybe a basketball score.

77 Wrong 7-6 or more likely 111-10.  Now I know why Padres sent Nova back.

I fucking hate fucking two out runs anyway. But fucking 7 of them? FUCK

If Cano can hit another 3-run HR here, we’ll be in the lead again.

Jon, I imagine Cano just made you feel a bit better there, then.

This officially blows

Seems our pitchers have specialized in giving up two out runs recently.

Nova quickly expunges my satisfaction at not getting Dempster…

On the plus side, at least there’s no way Lew Ford hits a double here.

... wait.

There is a lot of reasons to panic right now

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCc-RWIp7XU

How about a mound visit?  How about pulling him?  Are we leaving him in until Balti hits double digits?  Gah.

Seriously, why stick with Nova?

How many innings can Ramiro Pena give us tonight?

Sometimes pitchers just have a bad game. Whatever. It doesn’t do Nova any good to just let him get his ass kicked.

[96] It ain’t doing wonders for me, neither.

Please. This team can make up this deficit.
Not the one they’ll be facing in a few innings, but this deficit? Please.

Well, it’s a good thing Swish is back

Iguana may be here until next ASB.
