NYDN: Yankees GM Brian Cashman overruled by Hank, Hal Steinbrenner in Rafael Soriano signing

Less than a week earlier, GM Brian Cashman had said he wouldn’t give up the first-round draft pick required to ink Soriano. But Hal and Hank Steinbrenner didn’t agree with his game plan - according to a source familiar with the Yankees’ thinking - and overruled him, giving the righthander a deal that could ultimately go to three years and pay him $35 million.

The overwhelming concern among the Yankee brass, the source said, was that the club was going into the season with an uncertain starting rotation and little protection for closer Mariano Rivera. The move leaves the team without the draft pick Cashman coveted, but with one of the best bullpens in baseball.

According to the source, the Steinbrenners were bothered by Cashman’s blueprint. One of the big issues was that Joba Chamberlain, a prized prospect yet to reach an expected high ceiling, was going to be Rivera’s primary set-up man.

So we’ve gone from the scary scenario of a lying GM who overpaid for a relief pitcher to an ownership who doesn’t care what their GM says and will act impetuously and foolishly.

Wonderful.

You know, given the relative magnitude of the contracts, it’s easy to say that this situation with Rodriguez was obviously worse. But at least they were thinking that ARod is a really good player (maybe the best player in the league at the time) and that he should be a career Yankee. There’s a lot of “you don’t get it” for Hank/Hal in that scenario, but I understood it.

‘We need Rafael Soriano’ from Hank/Hal is a different level of this sort of shit and is much, much scarier to me.

If the CAIRO projection recently published, of Soriano increasing the Yankees playoff odds increasing w/some significance, represents reality, then how is it “impetuous and foolish”?

It’s not exactly trading Fred McGriff for Dale Murray.

Anyway, as owners it’s fine for them to give Cashman - not exactly Ed Barrow - some strategic direction.

If the CAIRO projection recently published, of Soriano increasing the Yankees playoff odds increasing w/some significance, represents reality, then how is it “impetuous and foolish”?

Because they could have improved their chances of winning just as much by adding a backup IF like Willy Aybar or a backup OF like Scott Hairston, and it wouldn’t have cost them a draft pick and $36M to do it.

Have Aybar and Hairston signed?  Maybe they’re still in the plans.  I was thinking they could have used some of the $36 to sweeten the offer to Lee, but that’s surely double-counting.

[3]“Because they could have improved their chances of winning just as much by adding a backup IF like Willy Aybar or a backup OF like Scott Hairston, and it wouldn’t have cost them a draft pick and $36M to do it.”

But can’t they still do those things, and improve the chances even more?

I don’t think the argument is one of the three; why shouldn’t they make all three moves?

[5] Because signing Soriano for 36 million and a draft pick is not a good signing.

I guess it’s more defensible if they sign a good back up IF and OF, but it’s still not a good signing.

When they say were concerned about Joba…

is the concern that he’s not good enough to hand the ball to Mo

OR

is the concern that he should be starting?

Also, it’s really never a good idea to give a player leverage, like they did with Soriano. That’s why Cash is the GM, not Levine or anyone else.

I thought Hal was supposed to be the calm and collective brother.  Michael, to Hank’s Sonny.

This should make us all feel better:

an ownership who doesn’t care what their GM says and will act impetuously and foolishly

That’s our birthright.

Because signing Soriano for 36 million and a draft pick is not a good signing

If Soriano is anything less than Burnettesque and they make the playoffs and make a run, we won’t give a damn about whether it was a good signing. Well, some of us will, but Hank and Hal will not be among them.

One of the big issues was that Joba Chamberlain, a prized prospect yet to reach an expected high ceiling, was going to be Rivera’s primary set-up man.

If this is true, it means Joba has to prove himself as a reliever before he ever gets a whiff of starting, at this franchise.

They. Don’t. Trust. Him.

The only thing that will change that is seeing pre-gnat Joba.

[9] Doesn’t that make you feel not better but worse, since you’ll never get within autograph-signing-distance of her or her equivalent?  (Here I’m assuming you haven’t given up already.)

Also, does whoever that is have green eyes along with everything else?

Also, does whoever that is have green eyes along with everything else?

I think the more pressing question is whether she has poor judgement and “daddy issues”.

I’m glad that picture at least cuts off Ms. Fox’s freakishly large thumb.

I can live with the fact that GM Hal or GM Hank wanted Soriano, but I wish they could have reached that decision before their nominal GM publicly staked out a position.

Edit: Thinking about it a little more, if this report is accurate, it could suggest that they may have also been the driving force behind the failed attempt to trade Montero for Lee, and it probably doesn’t bode well for any of their prospects going forward.

They. Don’t. Trust. Him.

Bingo.  Not sure that necessarily means that Joba won’t get a crack at starting though.  After all, anybody can start.  Pitching teh ate, OTOH…

It does make me feel better. I’m on my phone, anyone wanna get Natalie portman

Let’s see if this logic makes sense.

Hal and/or Hank are apparently willing to make decisions for their GM in terms of player additions.

Are they behind Chamberlain not being a starter? I could see that as more plausible than Cashman simply doing a 180. It would also explain Cashman’s seeming unwillingness to talk about it. It further would account for the point in the Post report about their being some in the front office who would like to give Chamberlain another shot in the rotation.

Are they behind Chamberlain not being a starter?

Cashman has been pretty tight lipped about the topic of Joba getting a(-nother) chance as a starter. I think he’s been told they don’t want any more of that discussion, and so he doesn’t want to talk about it and chance a public disagreement with Spanky and Alfalfa.

I think Cashman has probably kept TFC around despite their wishes, and they’re just a coupla of meatballs. They probably won’t use even his name, simply referring to him only as “that chubby hippo” or something pithy.

Hey now, wait just a second…

[18] She’s smiling like she just got back from the dentist.

Why thank you

At least…. he’s not Tony Womack

[8] Fredo and Sonny. There is no Michael in this scenario.
