NYDN: Yankees closer Mariano Rivera says his injured knee has healed, is excited for spring training

Yankee fans who had withdrawal not hearing Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” for most of last season will be happy to hear that the pitcher behind that entrance song is ready to go for 2013.

“I feel great,” Mariano Rivera said Tuesday night.

If Mo feels great, I feel great.  Aside from the fact that the rest of the Yankees are terrible.

In what qualifies as related news at the New York Daily News: Youkilis hasn’t returned Joba’s phone call. Welcome to middle school.

Remember how excited everyone was after the 2008 season because there were a ton of contracts that were expiring and there was just a feeling that if the Yankees spent smarter, they would be even more of a dominant force than the team that made the playoffs for a decade straight?

Well now it feels like 2005 all over again, waiting for a handful of bad contracts to expire a few years down the road and hoping that this time, they will be smarter.

Wow…that is something.

Sort of, except that I thought that the 2007 Yankees were still going to have a realistic shot at winning the World Series (2008 and beyond were a mystery at the time). The 2014 Yankees? Not so much.

I sure hope I’m wrong!

[1] It is truly a shame that they aren’t making Celebrity Deathmatch anymore. Truly.

[5] - Have a trampoline steel cage match.  It practically writes itself.

With the Phils signing Delmon Young to play RF everyday (good luck with that), the Yanks should make a run at Domonic Brown.  Nunez for Brown might get it done.  Neither is going to get a fair chance with their current team and we all know the future replacement for the Captain will be a FA signing (Andrus probably).  Nunez could replace Utley in 2014 and would see legitimate playing time this year as the backup 2B/SS with the Phils while Brown is an ideal buy low candidate who isn’t Arb eligible for 2 years.  A change of scenery / exchange of enigmas might benefit teams and players.

By the way don’t be surprised if the Yanks pursue Utley next year if they lose Cano.  Bad knees yes but perfect swing for stadium (ask Sabathia).  Probably good for 120 games / yr.  Obviously not ideal but much shorter deal (probably 3 yrs).  Also could allow team to break in D Adams or CoJo as utility IF.

[7] I’ve been all for the Yankees acquiring Brown for a few years now…but I don’t think he fits right now.  They’re stocked with lefty swinging OF, and Brown really doesn’t hit lefties.  Also - as Dave Cameron notes - the only way the Phillies’s signing of Young makes sense is if they platoon Brown/Young.  Now, maybe the Phillies aren’t that smart but…I think Nunez’s RH bat fits more with the 2013 Yankees than Brown’s LH bat, personally.  If they could make that swap.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they purse Utley.  However 1) Boras clients usually sign late 2) I think Utley will be off market early.  Utley definitely is one of those guys that - despite popular opinion - is NOT destined to be hurt every year.  I could see 2014-2017 him putting up 12-15 WAR.  Error bars are higher though b/c he has a greater chance of being hurt.  But it isn’t 100%.
