NY Times: Gardner’s Setback Leaves Yankees Bracing for Much Longer Wait

Gardner will visit Dr. James Andrews, the noted sports orthopedist, on Monday or Tuesday. Then, at his agent’s request, he will travel to Cincinnati to visit Dr. Timothy Kremchek for a third opinion.

The news was a blow to the Yankees, who were hoping that Gardner could return next week to re-energize the lineup. Gardner has been on the disabled list since April 18 with a bone bruise and a pulled muscle in his elbow.

“He’s had more than enough rest,” General Manager Brian Cashman said. “He should be fine by now. We’ll see what someone else sees.”

Maybe you should have done an exam when he first got hurt instead of resting him on the hope he would get better?

In other great news, the Yankees were outbid for Jorge Soler.  I’m annoyed that I went to the trouble of creating a Jorge Soler tag for a grand total of two posts, but whatever.

At least the days when people would accuse the Yankees of buying a pennant appear to be over.  They’re not buying anything these days.  Seriously, what use could they have had for a 20 year OF prospect with great physical tools?

Gardner will visit Dr. James Andrews

Oh, f*ck me.

It was much better to spend a third of that money on a part-time college pitcher that had a fastball, no control, and a shredded elbow.  And another two thirds and a draft pick on a back-up closer to use in the 7th inning.  $30 million is a lot, but $3.5 mill per season for a kid that could be an AS talent ain’t a bad investment.

Meh.  What are you going to do?

Meh.  What are you going to do?

Complain!

[3]  I want this poster banned.

God bless this forum and all those who travel within it.

2 But he had a great post up move

Offhand, I can’t think of anything more frustrating in sports than seemingly minor injuries that linger for a long time.

Not even the Soriano contract?

[7] Sterling’s HR calls (and miscalls)?

Eh, why pay 30 million for 9 years worth of a 20 year old phenom’s potential, when we can 30 million for 1 year of A-Rod driving in 60 runs and hitting -.500 with RISP?

Not even the Soriano contract?

Not even! Soriano, at least, it is done with. You KNOW you’re stuck with him. Here, you don’t know anything. It just lingers and lingers and lingers and false hope after false hope after false hope. Argh.

Apparently, Soler can opt out during any given year once he hits arbitration. So in reality the cubs are probably paying him 16 million for two years in the minors and 3 years in the majors, and then upwards of that once he becomes arb eligible. That is basically the contract that the number 1 or 2 overall draft pick gets. So it isn’t really much of a bargain, especially since he still gets 3 mil a year for 9 years even if he is a total bust.

Still sucks, but it isn’t like the Cubs got him cheap. If he doesn’t become an above average player in the bigs it is a pretty substantial waste of money. If he does become a star then it works out being equal to getting an extra early draft pick, but not much more than that.

“It just lingers and lingers and lingers and false hope after false hope after false hope.”

Phil Hughes’s entire career

Touche!

Yeah, Hughes’ career has also been pretty frustrating. There, though, lingering injuries are intertwined, so it can still count as “lingering injuries.” Same with Joba.

The TSBGFC is considering a motion to set itself on fire.  Mike K, do you vote “aye” too?

[12] Shouldn’t the Yankees have used their financial leverage one last time to try and get an extra early draft pick? Especially if he it isn’t an ML contract so thus it’s not affecting the big league payroll until he gets to the bigs. (Not sure if he is, anyone know?)

The Yankees have found ways to waste waayyy more money than $30M, but apparently now that they have signed Soriano, reacted to Matzusaka with Igawa, sign countless LOOGYs to above market contracts, and locked up ARod for a billion years all of which are past his prime, now is when they have to draw the line on trying to flex their financial advantage.

Shouldn’t this be the way to utilize deeper pockets? Trying to buy future performance (or at least the potential for HUGE future performance) instead of paying for past performance? Or should I say, instead of paying for players to finish their contracts out on other teams?

[16] pretty much. It’s essentially buying an extra mid-first round draft pick and being able to spread the cost over nearly a decade. Not something a club should do every year maybe, but it’s still worth it when you make a trillion dollars a year.

[15] Sorry, I was at the burn ward in the hospital so couldn’t respond to this.  Um, “aye”.
