NY Post: Yankees GM calls Montero ‘best player I’ve traded’

Yankees GM Brian Cashman has traded Alfonso Soriano, Nick Johnson, David Wells and Mike Lowell, but said believes Jesus Montero could be better than all of them.

“He may very well be the best player I’ve traded,” Cashman said of Montero, whom he sent to Seattle in a deal to get right-hander Michael Pineda that was finalized yesterday. “He’s that good. He’s a middle-of-the-lineup type bat.”

That means Cashman expects a lot out of Pineda, the 6-foot-7, 23-year-old who went 9-10 as a rookie last year. Cashman and Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik first discussed Pineda at the Winter Meetings last month.

Let’s hope not.

As long as Pineda is better.

It’s actually probably better for the Yankees if Montero is great.

It would put paid to some of the “OMG Yankee prospects are sooooo overrated… Drew Henson…” nonsense, and might subtly increase the value of future prospects in trades.

Likewise, if Noesi is a league avg. SP, maybe the value of Phelps, Warren, etc. goes up.

And not so subtly increase the income of gastroenterologists treating Yankee fan’s ulcers.

I hope he’s great so we can sign him later on. 28 year old Jesus will be a great holiday present in December 2017

[4] If 28 year old Jesus were on the market now he’d apparently get about 9 years and $200+ million.

[4]Just in time to replace Alex Rodriguez.

I love how headline writers translate “MAY BE the best player I’ve traded” into “best player I’ve traded.”

[5] It’s the least we can do after shipping him off to Overcast City

As long as we’re trading our Drabeks and Buhners for other Drabeks and Buhners, and not Rhodens and Phelpses, I’m cool. It’ll all work out.

Rhoden would have been fine if it had been a number of years earlier in his career.

[9]Did we just trade David Phelps for Kyle Drabek?

[10] Same with Ken Phelps, actually.

Did we just trade David Phelps for Kyle Drabek?

You don’t trade pitching for pitching.  You trade hitting for pitching so that when MLB moves to the 20 man pitching staff you’ll be ready for it.

[13]We should have held on to Josh Phelps.  Then we could make a trade.

I love how headline writers translate “MAY BE the best player I’ve traded” into “best player I’ve traded.”

Over at Knickerblogger, someone linked to a hilarious article about Eddy Curry where the headline is “Curry has a beef with the Knicks” and the article itself has Curry saying he has no beef with the Knicks. Huh??!?!

“Curry has a beef” is a man-bites-dog headline, or v.v.

You don’t trade pitching for pitching.  You trade hitting for pitching so that when MLB moves to the 20 man pitching staff you’ll be ready for it.

As long as there is a plan, I’m happy.

[17] That’s a dangerous philosophy.

“‘Plans are overrated,’ I said.  ‘Let’s just start killing things.  If there’s nothing else around, we can always kill each other.’”

I’m don’t know whether this has any impact on the Yankees plans.  My best guess is no impact.

Alex Cora has announced that he is not, repeat not, retired from MLB.  His retirement announcement only applied to winter ball.

Hey, there aren’t many FAs out there who can play third base.

Rilke, are you quoting something?

[21] S.K.Z. Brust, _Issola_.  From a series that’s a Dumas/Raymond Chandler/Hungarian fairy tale pastiche.

I’m pretty surprised at SG’s growing dislike for this trade.

The thinking behind it seems sound.  Trade high on a positionless hitting prospect coming off a great SSS September audition and acquire one of last year’s top 30 or so pitchers—a possessor of strikeout stuff and good command—who also happens to be young and cost-controlled for 5 years.

It’s a hard trade to evaluate.  IMHO if Montero learns to play catcher adequately, he has a good chance to be a Hall of Famer.  In fact, I think if he just replicates last year’s ML results for 15 years, he might even make the Hall as a DH.

IMHO Pineda has a good chance to be a #1 starter, particularly if he develops an effective changeup. Because of supply-and-demand, maybe a #1 starter is more valuable than a HoF hitter.  I don’t know.

[24]  David, no one’s opinion here is humble.

I love Nick Johnson but… Nick Johnson? He’s on the list?

This is a test.

I traded a Mickey Mantle rookie card for a Stan Bahnsen and a Johnny Blanchard.

Can we get Pavano along with Nick Johnson?

I disagree with 27.

BREAKING NEWS!

The Mariners might move Ichiro out of the leadoff spot!

Seriously, that’s an actual headline on ESPN’s front page. Fuck the heck?

Jesus to leadoff, and bat 2-9?

OTF’s posts aren’t appearing now. Thought that kind of thing was cured about 4 years ago.

Yankees interested in Ibanez.

[32] Maybe he stopped taking his prescription.
