NY Daily News: New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada set to return

Posada is slated to be back in the lineup Wednesday after missing the past 15 games with a fractured right foot, but the catcher was visibly irritated that the Yankees had opted not to activate him Tuesday night.

“I’d be happy if (Wednesday) was (Tuesday); I need to play,” Posada said. “I thought I was coming off the DL (Tuesday) and that I would be in there. They say no, so I can’t do nothing about it. Just get ready for (Wednesday).”

Hopefully Jorge picks up where he left off.

Posado has been very angry lately… I noticed that the tv crews are taking great delight in discussing his frustration with not playing, anyway.

I want to see him hurt some baseballs again.

Should Cano stay in the 5th spot?

Should Cano stay in the 5th spot?

as opposed to? He’s hitting better than Tex and ARod. Moving him down isn’t a real option. And the chances of Girardi bumping Tex or Arod for Cano are slim to none.

Ed Price via LoHud:

• An official from another team said word going around is that Roy Oswalt would approve a trade only to the Phillies, Yankees or Cardinals.

I can’t see it happening, but it’s nice that the NYY are now a preferred destination for someone who was supposedly averse to playing in NYC. I guess winning, like money, changes everything.

I wouldn’t mind at all if A-Rod moved to 3 and Cano moved to 4 but I really doubt that will happen.

Random Double Post Eliminated

[4] If Tex is out for a day or two Cano might get a shot in the 3 spot.

[3] Oswalt talked to the Washington Post and (apparently) said he’d accept a trade to the Nats.

Oswalt, who has requested a trade from the 17-34 Astros, said he would be willing to play “anywhere” he can contend. He cited the Nationals’ offensive potential and the ensuing call-up of phenom Stephen Strasburg as reasons for his potential interest in playing in Washington.

...

“They haven’t came to me with anybody,” Oswalt said. “I don’t know who’s interested. They haven’t really approached me about anybody yet. I’m open for whoever. Supposedly, I’ve two or three people called, but nothing more than phone calls.”

[4] I think Cano/Rodriguez/Teixiera might make slightly more sense than Rodriguez/Cano/Teixeira.

So, the other day I noticed that Cano has an OPS+ of 140 over his last 212 games (since the start of ‘09). Does anyone know what would be my best bet for figuring out other ~200 game stretches where 2B have posted OPS+ of ~140 or better?

I can’t see any need for Oswalt. I could see all 5 starters deserving to start in the post season and it being a hard choice about who to put in the pen.

[8] Try Joe Morgan from about ‘72 to ‘76. Dude was a beast.

[8] Sandberg ‘90 to ‘92 might also work.

Yeah, I know about those, but I’m looking to find all stretches of ~200 games where that’s happened for a 2B. Just looking to put Cano’s offensive performance over the last season+ in context.

Oh.. you’re looking for a tool to do it? BR’s search tool is pretty good with that stuff. Subscription required, though.

[8] - Chase Utley had an OPS+ of 146 in 2007, adding games on either side of that might keep him over 140.

[13] as far as I can tell, BR can only find seasons, not stretches of games that are longer than 162 games.

If you already knew the players of interest, you could use the day to day database and then covert their stats to OPS+.

[6][7]  I assumed that every 2-hitter would be a lefty bat and was trying to keep the L-L lineup spot out of the way by batting Cano 4th and A-Rod 3rd.

I was asking if anyone thinks Posada should be slotted in 5th, thereby moving Cano to the 6 spot.  my question had nothing to do with A-Rod & Teix.

(now I sound angry, like Posado)

BTW, I happen to see Bobby Valentine on BBTN last night and he mentioned that NY has Romano in the OF.  I assume he meant Russo?

[18] My original response addressed that, Cano is currently the best hitter on the team. How can you move him down in the order?

[19] I believe he’s referring to the power of urine forcing Canoe out of the 5th spot.

Who is being sent down?  I can’t seem to access the linked article.  Speculation was it would be Miranda which makes sense…

[19 & 20] exactly.  Posado is furious… we don’t want him fracturing a hand punching the line up card. He’s really, really angry.  Don’t go near him.

Since it was mentioned a couple times though, what about moving Teix down? Robbie is posadoing the crap out of the ball right now, maybe he should bat 3rd? Take the pressure off Teix, because every single Yankee announcer said its all “mental” with him?

POSADO IS… THE ANGRIEST CATCHER IN THE WORLD.

Who is being sent down?  I can’t seem to access the linked article.  Speculation was it would be Miranda which makes sense…

Depends how banged up Teix is? I’m thinking Ramano, with Granderson back? Unless his offense is enough to send Pena down? Which I have a hard time seeing. Or, I don’t know.

By the way, with the rain and traffic (and there was a hella lot of both), I only made it in time for the second game of the past Thursday Scranton doubleheader, no Jesus, no Granderson. But Melancon was his usual AAA dominant self. And beautiful ballpark, with the hill/trees serving as a great backdrop. And my friend’s daughter got a launched t-shirt and a used baseball after the game. So it was all awesome.

Vs. L         Vs. R
Jeter         Jeter
Swisher       Granderson
Cano         A-Rod
A-Rod         Cano
Posado         Posado
Teix         Teix

I kinda prefer to leave Teix where he’s at, and him hitting like the way he should. Probably still suboptimal, but superstitious + don’t fix what ain’t broken.

“Posado is furious”

Maybe he’s got a drinking/attitude problem.

Now I’m wondering about Paul O’Neill.

[10] Morgan was apparently a .182 hitter in the postseason for his career.  So, now when I hear him talk about “clutch hitting” (clutch being one of his favorite words), it will remind me of how I feel whenever I hear John Flaherty talk about hitting period.

[17] Batting Swisher second solves that problem.

[21, 24] Yeah, Miranda isn’t going to SWB if Teixeira needs a day or two off, although Posada has played about a dozen games at 1B in his career.  Has Romano ever played first?  And they’re not going to DFA Moello until they’re sure Posada can catch.

Since we have Romano why not call it quits with Pena?

Romano can’t play SS.  At least, it’s pretty clear that the Yankees don’t want him playing any meaningful innings there.

I know Posado’s anger can level mountains, but I think Girardi will keep Cano batting fifth, unless he ends up batting second or Teixeira is out.

[24] Glad you enjoyed your trip.  The stadium is *much* nicer since the Yankees came in.  The artificial turf when the Red Barons played there was an eyesore, the pavillion in LF was always under construction - literally, for about 15 years - and the interior was in poor repair.  There are definitely NICER AAA stadiums - okay I’ve only been to one, but the new stadium the Iron Pigs play it is fantastic - but it isn’t a bad place to go.

As a side note, we’re looking to take a trip to Reading to see the Thunder when they come to town, next week.  I’ll be sure to give my first ever AA update if that does occur.

[29] IDK, you could put Swisher at first and Russo in RF.  If it’s only a game or two I don’t think that is a bad idea.  You can recall Miranda in 10 days when they are ready to put Moeller on waivers.

[30] 1) there are legitimate questions about his ability to play SS 2) I like the idea of having two backup IF who can also play the OF.  Lessens the chances of Thames playing the OF, also gives more flexibility.

[32] well, hopefully Posado will just go incredible Hulk on opposing pitchers and leave everyone else alone.  That includes the umpires, who as a group seem to have very short fuses these days.

I’m just happy to see Posada back despite his drinking/attitude problem.

[35] Joba has to have somebody to go out with…

LH:

Derek Jeter SS
Nick Swisher RF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Jorge Posada DH
Curtis Granderson CF
Francisco Cervelli C
Brett Gardner LF

Happy Hughes Day!

I wonder is that’s not their best lineup (offense and defense) from this point forward. IOW, are they better with Posada DH, Cervelli C or Posada C, Miranda/Thames DH?

Probably a moot point since Posada would be even angrier if he’s not the #1 C anymore.

May the baserunning school begin again.

The Angry Baserunner.

The Baserunner Witn A Drinking Problem.

Drinking and Baserunning Made Simple.

what’s this Posada drinking problem joke all about?

Dustin Pedroia and I don’t even have to look it up

[42] Wait… you’re calling Posado an elf ???

[39] Even if they are better with Cervelli at C and Posada at DH, Cervelli can’t catch every day and Posada is going to need days completely off even if he’s doing more DHing than catching.

[41] It’s why Po is so angry.

And it may explain some of his bad baserunning. Those hip flasks can be a problem.

[43] Wait, Posada’s an elf, as well as being an angry drinker?

So with the exception of Nick Johnson, this team appears to be about the team that they assembled at the beginning of the year.

Can’t complain much ...

Oh wait, I can. CHoP is still in the roster.

[41] Someone at the end of the Pitch A thread asserted Joba has a drinking/attitude problem.  I took exception.
