MLB.com: Yankees’ bullpen finishes job for Nova

NEW YORK—Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada hit two-run homers to support Ivan Nova’s first start of the year as the Yankees defeated the Twins, 4-3, on Monday at Yankee Stadium.

I thought Nova looked pretty good overall.  His location was great for most of the game.  Even the pitch that Thome hit for a two-run double was good one, a changeup down in the zone.  He could have located it a bit more outside, but it wasn’t a bad spot really; tip your cap to the forty year old on that one.

I’ve been wishcasting all offseason and spring that Posada would have an offensive rebound as full-time DH.  Not to ‘07 numbers but at least ‘09.

Yeah, that Thome hit that pitch is a testament to how awesome Thome is as a hitter. That was a good two strike pitch.

I’m pretty happy that Nova took on a lineup full of lefties and pitched that well. He picked up a few swings and misses too. I think he didn’t throw a lot of strikes with his curve, but he was right around the zone with it and the only time he seemed to really miss was with two strikes when Martin was calling for the ball way down. All in all, there was a lot to be positive about from Nova today.

One thing I was wondering, what happened to Nova’s change? Did he throw it once this game?

[3] The pitch that Thome hit for a 2R double was a change…

[4] Reading comprehension fail. It didn’t seem like he threw a lot of changes though. Especially considering how nasty it appears to be.

I did sleep through much of this game though. I’ve been getting up at 5 AM to get my runs in before work.

With Phil Hughes doing his Javy Vazquez routine at the moment (i.e. trying to fool major league hitters with 87 mph fastballs) Nova may well be the Yanks number three starter for the moment.

I suspect Phil’s phastball will, in fact, return.

LoHud: “That’s how the Yankees drew it up before the season, and after tonight’s game Joe Girardi officially named Joba Chamberlain as his seventh inning reliever.”

Thank heavens, I was starting to lose sleep.

Didn’t they also draw it up that Hughes would pitch like early season 10 and Jeter would hit like 09 and Joba would pitch like 07?  If you’ re gonna draw why not a masterpiece?

[8] If that happens, then they should start a hunger strike in front of the house of Mike Mussina. Yankee season would be effed anyway, but at least Moose getting major leaguers out with an assortment of slop will be entertaining.

Phil Hughes getting two strikes and then a gazillion foul balls followed by a bomb is repetitive, depressing, and frankly, quite boring.

Maybe he should drink tiger blood or something.

[9] How do you officially pronounce someone a seventh inning pitcher?

“By the official powers vested in me as the manager of New York Yankees, I hereby declare Joba Chamberlain teh seventh inning pitcher™ for the foreseeable future. Chamberlain continues in this role until he stays in Brian Cashman’s doghouse, gets a haircut, stops ravaging the post-game spreads and more importantly, stops getting outs.”

-Signed, Joseph E. Girardi, Manager, New York Motherfarnsworthing Yankees.

How many years before Farnsworthy and its variations are in the OED?

[13] I wonder if he knows.

Also, I understand major leaguers get a kick out of getting mail from their young fans.

Dear Kyle,

You are AWESOME ! OMG ! I saw u pitch @ my very first big league game my dad he baught us tix for my birthday when we lived in Kansas City and now I spend summers with my mom and her boyfriend they live in Ft. Lee, NJ. They took me to Yankee stadium and we had hot dogs and nachos they were AWESOME.

I have a question for you some guys in the row behind us kept saying bad words and my mom got mad at them so then they were laughing and stuff and started saying motherfarnsworth and stuff and I didn’t know what that meant but I figured it was coz they were your fans too like me.

Anyway, hope you get to play forever I like baseball alot.

Who is their number two starter?

[16] ManBan

[16] Aceves. He was not considered to be good enough to be a Red Sox ace, so instead, he gets to be a Yankee number 2.

In response to OTF from the last thread:

No, fencing is considered a sport, not a martial art. And do you think you’d last 5 minutes? The USFA doesn’t have an old, unemployed drunks division, you know.

Oops. Can a mod delete that post?  Totally uncalled for. Sorry.

Can I just say how much fun it is to have meaningful baseball games again?

From what I saw of Nova last night, I thought his performance was very good overall as well.  Most of his stuff was down, moving and well controlled, and he was very efficient, tossing 83 pitches in 6 innings.  He’s clearly a work in progress, but he just needs to be solid after all.

In the form of mild complaint, I’d like to see the Yanks rely a little less on the longball for their scoring.

I liked what I saw from Nova too, though I saw more fly balls that I’d consider ideal.  Totally agreed on the pitch Thome hit: that was a solid pitch, and a great hitter went down & got it.

[21] If not for a really nice diving catch by Delmon Young (!), Gardner would’ve driven in two with a double, making the Yankees less reliant on HRs.  Speaking of which, it’s always nice to see the Yanks win a game when they hit into some poor luck.

WJ- I’m employed. Love always, otf.

OTF:
Glad to hear it (not sure why I thought otherwise, anyway. A post from years ago?). I personally think you’d do great in the old drunks division. Sorry for being a dick. Pals?

When CC opts out next season, could the Yankees take a one year vacation from playing in the MLB?

I thought [19] was about me, but I too am employed. 2 outa 3 ain’t bad.

I’m going to start keeping a checklist of the annual complaints. The “The Yankees hit too many homeruns. I wish they’d score more scrappily (i.e. sustainably)” fallacy makes an earlier than expected appearance.

[29] I’m pretty sure that the Yankees hit too many homeruns, etc. complaint came up in game 2.

I used to fence but the swords were short and folded up and the opponent didnt know my name but was so grateful for the competition they gave me money.

[31] The way you write that, sounds like you used to rob people at knife-point.

[31] given what fencing means in portuguese slang, this looks like you used to be a sex worker.
