Fanhouse: Full Scouting Report: Manny Banuelos

This is where Banuelos’ game has changed the most since the 2009 season. Last season, I had him sitting 90-92 with the fastball, touching 93. In his most recent outing, he sat 93-94 mph, never dipping below 92, and routinely hit 95-96 mph. Banuelos even touched 97 on a couple occasions. At that level of velocity, he has a true plus fastball, particularly for a left-hander.

You’ll want to read the whole thing as Frankie Piliere is even more complimentary of his changeup.  It’s interesting how different (better) the farm looks now compared to the beginning of the season, and Piliere will have a scouting report up of the other pitching prospect as exciting as Banuelos, Betances, this weekend.

I got the sense from reading that report (admittedly in a bit of a hurry) that he’d just seen Banuelos once this year - if so I’m dialing back my hopes.

It’s been a very exciting year down on the farm. I admit I definitely overreacted to Jesus’ slow start this season. But I think it’s a natural reaction when possessing unfairly high expectations for a player. I’m most excited about Betances, personally.

The Killer Bs!!! Betances! Banuelos! Brackman!

I’m confused. I checked the standings just now and the Yankees are alone in first place by a full game over Tampa Bay. That can’t be right, can it? And 6 and 1/2 ahead of third place Boston? I thought that the Yankees sucked. So weird.

Oh, and in case you’re interested, my latest LA Times Sports Legends Revealed piece - it’s about a group of Ukranian football players during World War II and their heroism in the face of some awful Nazi terror.

Here it is.

Should the Yankees consider DHing Swisher and playing Kearsns in right for the time being?

[2] That may be true but the reports of velocity uptick have come from several sources, and the offspeed stuff was always pretty good.

Depends on Alex? And Jorge?

Considering the prognosticating powers of your username, please stop.

Just kidding, I still wish NJ, AS, and DH nothing but the best.

This from Henson’s wiki page:

“Henson made his major league debut with the Yankees in 2002, but played in only three games. He struck out in his only at-bat. In 2003 he played in five games for New York, going one for eight and scoring two runs. He ended his brief major league career with only one hit in nine at bats (a .111 average) before announcing his retirement.”

Sort of remember him playing in the big club, but not really.

Since it’s right around the corner, who will be getting called up in Sept? Is SWB going to be in the playoffs, thus potentially delaying call-ups?

11 - Jim?

[7 & 9] Word is when Alex comes back they’re going to DH him initially.  So in the near-term, assuming Alex can DH soon, against righties Alex DH, Gardner/Granderson/Swisher OF.  Against lefties sit one of Granderson/Gardner, and play Kearns in LF.  If Alex can’t come back soon, sure, DH Swisher and play Kearns in the OF.  The only problem with that is you’re either going to get Thames or Pena in the OF sometimes.

[13] Yes!  6 up with 19 to play.  Don’t be taking our players when we’re trying to get 2 Governer’s Cups in 3 years!

Depending on the dates that things occur, I think the NY Yanks will be activating Aceves, Marte, and Pettitte in September (Pettitte later, obviously), as well as Berkman.  The three pitchers in Scranton on the 40 man (Alby, Nova, and Sanchez) I think will all come up after SWB’s playoffs are over, though they may leave Sanchez down.  Also Miranda, Russo, and Curtis, I would think.  The only others on the 40-man are Golson, Huffman, and Corona.  So that’s 13 players total - would they call them all up at some point?  Minus any new injuries, I doubt it.  But you never know, especially if they can open a big lead on Tampa/Boston.

I’ve been out of the loop.  Working far away here.  But I guess with A-Rod out, the team has stopped waiting around for him to hit home runs.  It’s now scientifically demonstrable that A-Rod makes his team worse.

That scouting report almost qualifies as full-bore stalking man-crush.  I admit it made me a little excited.  Plus, what a name: Mannnnyyyyy Banueeeeelooooooos!

Kearns has been great, hasn’t he?  Get everyone healthy, and you can have:

Jeter
Swisher
Teixeira
A-Rod
Cano
Posada
Granderson
Kearns
Gardner

That ain’t half bad.

Rusty Hardin is HILARIOUS

Mike, since you follow the Scranton’s a lil more closely, what happened in the past?

Alby and Nova seem like the call up priority, but pretty tough minus for Scranton’s post season push. Maybe another of the position player for the match up bat.

Also wondering what’s going to happen with the catcher situation. Some kind of third catcher would be nice. But Scranton only has two catchers on their roster too.

BA has Yankee’s 1 and 2 in prospect hot sheet but not any of the B Guys or Montero, rather Adam Warren #1 (who he??) and Nova #2

Yeah, almost every team calls up a third catcher in September and you have to think the Yankees will want to be able to get Posada good and rested up for the playoffs without having to play Cervelli every day.  But there’s no other catchers on the 40-man, so some kind of roster move would be required.

[18] As far as when players are called up?  IIRC, they usually seem to leave important players down as long as possible.  If there is a *need* in NY of course that takes precedence.  E.g. if Posada went on the DL Sept 1st I think they’d make a 40-man move and call Montero up.

Once the playoffs are done at ANY level though, they try to get players onto other teams still going.  E.g. I think Austin Jackson played in AAA after Tampa’s season was done, a few years ago.  Sometimes they’ll even *demote* players, so if Trenton is still going guys like Phelps and Montero may go to AA for the rest of the playoffs.

Basically, right behind winning the Yankees are committed to developing players.  They (rightly, IMHO) believe the players will develop further playing in the minors than sitting in NY.  So unless the need is greater than, “wouldn’t it be nice to be able to pinch run for ARod, AND pinch-hit for Pena when ARod’s spot comes up again, AND have another 3B to put in the field!”, the players will remain in AAA as long as possible.  Once minors are completely done they’ll fill out the ML roster with players.

[20]  Warren K’d 15 in 7 ip in his start this week.  I think that qualifies as hot.  Still seen as mid/back end of rotation starter as far as I know.

But Scranton only has two catchers on their roster too.

Just saw this.  Scranton actually has three catchers right now.  Montero, Moeller, and PJ Pilliterre (unless he got DL’d again for a roster spot).  Plus, Rene Rivera was originally signed to be the veteran backup in Scranton, but he got hurt early on, which is why they signed Moeller.  Rivera is playing in Trenton.  As MC mentions, there would need to be a 40-man roster move, and barring injuries to Posada/Cervelli - or another position player gets a season-ending injury - I don’t see them adding another catcher.

What, Ramiro Pena as the emergency backup doesn’t reassure you?

Jeter
Swisher
Teixeira
A-Rod
Cano
Posada
Granderson
Kearns
Gardner

That ain’t half bad.

Well, except for that automatic out/GIDP machine at the top of the order.

Prove me wrong, Jeter. I. DARE. YOU.

[20] Didn’t we just have a conversation about Warren?

Basically, he’s a college guy who saw an uptick in velocity before the Yankees drafted him. He’s been very good in the minors and reports are that his stuff continues to improve. A year ago he was a back of the rotation arm/reliever. Now he might have upside as a mid rotation guy.

Should the Yankees consider DHing Swisher and playing Kearns in right for the time being?

Where does that leave Nick Johnson? (There is the set. Who has the spike?)

This is a bit old, but has anyone seen this?  How is this okay?

The part about contacts?  Seems annoying but ok I guess - I’m supposed to wear long sleeves and googles when working around cryogens, for example.

This is a bit old, but has anyone seen this?  How is this okay?

It’s the slippery slope of performance enhancing I guess.  I suppose you could say that as long as something is legal, it’s allowable.  It’s not really any different than LASIK, is it?

I guess the class-conscious response is, does he have a union, and if so what protections does that give him in turning down surgery?

[29] But that’s to protect you from potential harm.  I’m not sure what the right analogy would be for you—like if there was a drug that improved math ability and the Uni wanted you to take it?

I do get mandatory job-related training, though again that’s predominantly safety-related.  In other professions people do have to keep their job skills up to date.

Yeah, but you’re still missing the point I think—the kid has 20/20 vision and the Red Sox want it to be *better*.  In essence they do want him to use a performance enhancer.  It seems pretty benign but it does open the philosophical question up—what is okay for an employer to ask of an employee?

“the kid has 20/20 vision”

What’s average in the ML (for hitters)?  He’s strong as an ox compared to the general populace of men his age but they want him to lift weights.

Anyway, sounds like he’s not in a union if he’s not on the 40-man so whatever they ask presumably goes.

[32] There are such drugs, or at the very least Ritalin can make you focus better and have a better production. I don´t think Uni will tell anyone to use it, but some people will, no matter what. But I´d guess this is more like the club requiring ballplayers to juice.

Famously, Erdos was addicted to anphetamines, mostly by design. He is the author of the frase ” A mathematician is a machine that turns coffee into theorems.” Once, on a bet and request for his host (he is said to not have maintained a home, travelling from place to place and being hosted by the people working with him) he quitted greenies for a month. After the time he went to his host and said “see, I can stay a month away from drugs. But since I did not produce anything in this time, all I accomplished is to delay math progress.”
