Derek Jeter’s Shot At History

Consider the following list of players:

Omar Moreno, 1980
Frank Taveras, 1979
Horace Clarke, 1970
Juan Samuel, 1984
Jose Reyes, 2005
Omar Moreno, 1979
Sandy Alomar, 1971
Sandy Alomar, 1970
Jimmy ROllins, 2007
Juan Pierre, 2006

So, what’s the point of this list?  It’s a list of the top ten single season total for outs made (AB - H + CS + GDP) since 1969, which is when the mound was lowered to account for pitchers dominating the game in 1968.

So what does this have to do with Derek Jeter?  Jeter’s made 425 outs so far this year.  At his current pace, he’d end the year at 522, which would place him in a tie for 8th place on the list with Sandy Alomar’s 1970.

If he really steps it up, he may be able to get to second place and surpass Frank Taveras’s 535 in 1979.  Unfortunately, it looks like Omar Moreno’s 550 outs made in 1980 is a bit out of his reach.

If this season’s decline in production doesn’t serve to tamp down on the $/years of his next contract, nothing would have.

Good thing the internet and blogs were not yet invented during Lou Gehrig’s last season.

Is it better or worse if we found out he was injured? At least there’d be an expectation of him playing better when he gets his make-me-want-to-puke contract.

Let’s go Yankees.

Win it for Jeter’s re-dead corpse.

Good thing the internet and blogs were not yet invented during Lou Gehrig’s last season.

Gehrig had the good taste to retire in June.

Jimmy Rollins was MVP in 2007.  Not only did he lead the league in outs (which he has done three other times), but it’s the only season of his career when he was as good offensively as Jeter’s average season.  I think people should remember that when they write their Jeter obituaries.

BTW, BB-Ref includes sacrifices (both bunts and flies) in the outs made totals on their leaderboards, which gives a slightly different list than SG’s.  Moreno’s 1980 still leads, but with 560.  And Bobby Richardson’s 1964 ties for fourth.

[7] For context, Rollins only made one-third of Jeter’s salary in 2007.

I think his prospective contract drives most of the commentary.

I would be much less annoyed with Jeter if he were spinning his mediocre OBP fantasias down at the bottom of the lineup. Dude should be hitting 7th, 8th, or 9th most of the time. At base, that’s Girardi’s fault, I guess.

Good thing the internet and blogs were not yet invented during Lou Gehrig’s last season.

I think the issue is that this is NOT Jeter’s last season.  If it was a last hurrah on the end of a Hall of Fame resume, he’d be rightfully getting the credit he’s earned for what he’s done in his career.

Unfortunately, it’s more like a possible preview of three or four years where Jeter is a shell of his former self, drawing too much money and not producing enough while being mocked by all the Yankee haters and us internet dorks too.

That’s interesting, because the BB-Ref play index shows outs made as AB - H + CS + GDP.  I’d prefer to use a list with SH and SF too.

[9] Agree. Jeter’s having a bad season but it’s not his fault tha Girardi is batting him leadoff

[2] Pretty sure going into the season that was a majority desire here.  That Jeter have a down year lowering his contract amount, but Yankees still win WS.  Thought he latter hasn’t happened yet, we seem well on our way…but now nobody likes it.

IDK what Cashman will do with this.  It would help if Nunez plays unsustainably well in September.

Maybe I’m giving Girardi too much credit here, but I’m almost certain the idea has crossed his mind.  But he’s probably not too keen on following through for fear of the backlash he might receive, perhaps inside the clubhouse as well as out.

Gardner
Swisher
Teixeira
Cano
Posada
Thames
Granderson
Jeter
Pena

Jeter is much more acceptable in the 8 or 9 slot (and, yes, I realize that batting order is no big deal, but psychologically, this would help a lot).

That’s what leadership is. Of course, Jeter is El Capitan, so he should be leading by example and asking to be dropped down.

There isn’t really anybody to replace him anyway. He’s going to get a ton of money, but he’s been making a ton of money for a decade. Who could the Yankees have gotten but failed to because of his contract? I don’t think they’re going to suddenly go miser because of Jeter’s next contract. Especially not with the supposed revenue increases.

I don’t care if Jeter is pulling down Lloyd Blankfein money, so long as he isn’t being deployed in a foolish way.

I think Jeter should still leadoff against lefties.  He’s hitting .318/.378/.500 against them.  Unfortunately, that means he’s hitting .243/.312/.320 against righties.

I’d prefer to use a list with SH and SF too.

Rank   Player (age that year)    Outs Made   Year   Bats
1.  Omar Moreno (27)  560   1980   L
2.  Frank Taveras (29)  545   1979   R
3.  Horace Clarke (30)  542   1970   B
4.  Sandy Alomar (27)  536   1971   B
    Jose Reyes (22)  536   2005   B

7.  Sandy Alomar (26)  535   1970   B
    Omar Moreno (26)  535   1979   L
    Omar Moreno (29)  535   1982   L
10.  Alfredo Griffin (22)  532   1980   B

Jeter’s at 428.  Obviously not hitting enough sac flies.  Surprisingly not bunting enough, either.

[16]

Who could the Yankees have gotten but failed to because of his contract?

I don’t think anyone is complaining about Jeter’s present contract.

I think Jeter should still leadoff against lefties.  He’s hitting against .318/.378/.500 them.  Unfortunately, that means he’s hitting .243/.312/.320 against righties.

I approve this proposal. Draft a memo.

He’s hitting against .318/.378/.500 them.

You know, I hadn’t looked at Jeter’s splits in a while.  Would not have guessed that he’s basically the same hitter he’s always been against LHP (.335/.407/.500 career).

You know, I hadn’t looked at Jeter’s splits in a while.

His splits are pretty crazy this year.

vs. LHP: .318/.378/.500
vs. RHP: .243/.312/.320

Home: .306/.373/.449
Away: .230/.294/.307

First Half: .274/.340/.392
Second Half: .251/.317/.344

With a man on first: .186/.250/.229

vs. fly ball pitchers: .315/.375/.457
vs. ground ball pitchers (aka The Perfect Storm): .208/.299/.277

So basically, Jeter should lead off every home game against a lefty ground ball pitcher.  Otherwise, bench him.

So basically, Jeter should lead off every home game against a lefty ground ball pitcher.

Dallas Braden, you are screwed.

They way you guys post, sheesh, you think the Yankees play in the East River.

I can’t imagine what it’s like to root for the Pirates or the Orioles or the Royals. There are irritating things about the Yankees, but this is the defending champion, rolling toward the playoffs with the best record in the game. It’s a pretty sweet life.

[12]

Pretty sure going into the season that was a majority desire here.  That Jeter have a down year lowering his contract amount, but Yankees still win WS.  Thought he latter hasn’t happened yet, we seem well on our way…but now nobody likes it.

If Jeter’s new contract is for three years or less, and his stats return to being closer to his career norms, I would be thrilled.

[27] Since I responded directly to your post, it must have appeared I was criticizing you, but I wasn’t.  Your post was just a perfect opening for me to complain.  And that’s the main purpose of this site, is it not?

I think both of your conditions are likely to be met.  Though depends on how close “closer” needs to be and if you are okay putting a “guaranteed” qualifier on the length of the contract, as I expect an option year or two.

“Good thing the internet and blogs were not yet invented during Lou Gehrig’s last season.”

I wrote that to remind myself that Jeter a year ago had arguably his 3rd best year of his career. Add to that he was an integral component in helping win Yankee fans a fresh new World Championship.  I also wrote that to remind myself that his next contract and all the conversation about that is mere speculation to this point. To my knowledge he hasn’t commented on next year since spring training. Has he been terrible? Absolutely, almost as bad as his first month or so of 2004.  I think confidence is still a big part of the problem as it was then, though he is six years older. I think he still has some good baseball in him though it may be next year before it re-surfaces.

...a perfect opening for me to complain.  And that’s the main purpose of this site, is it not?

Don’t forget the business side.

Lefty fly-ball pitchers, you mean, right SG?

Anyway, I too hadn’t realized his platoon split had gone nutzo this year.

“vs. ground ball pitchers (aka The Perfect Storm): .208/.299/.277”

Eek.

Lefty fly-ball pitchers, you mean, right SG?

Yeah, dropped the ball on that one.

I just took the MCAT.  This thread reminds me of it
