That’s a HOF left side of the infield there…
After Jose Bautista hits his 7th home run of the day today he’ll reach the 50 HR plateau. Congratulations to him.
The fact that the Blue Jays announced they were shutting Morrow down for the season AFTER making this start against the Yankees is pretty annoying. It’d be nice if the Yankees make the Jays regret not shutting him down after his last start.
They won’t, but it’d be nice.
Comments
[98] Yeah kinda forgot about the craptacularness of the M’s offense. I feel like at least the crappy A’s hitters take a walk.
Gardner’s at 2-2. Two called strikes that were balls, one called ball that was a strike, and one correctly called ball.
I guess rumors of TSBG’s demise were greatly exaggerated.
Gardner Power!
That’s a big run from Brett.
That’s a nice start.
[100] That is too dangerously close to being correct for my liking.
[103] It’s just n PAs.
That’s a big run from Curtis.
Not bad for a platoon player.
I like extra base hits from Yankees.
Grandy is more animal than man!
Take it personal, Robbie.
Doesn’t this spot just scream three run jack infield popup for Cano?
What has happened to WOE?
Yay runs!
May Cano punish that insulting walk.
That sucked, Robinson.
That was sub-optimal Robbie.
Oh well the tack-on runs were still quite nice.
Man, what was Kevin Long waiting for, and why is Jeter immune to his charms.
This strikezone is terrible.
I actually like that Girardi got his best middle reliever against the Jays’ best hitters. Unfortunately, Robertson walked them.
I disapprove of this walktastic outing by Robertson.
121- not according to GD on the last AB.
but just checked Bautista & that, yes, to the extent I trust GD for anything.
Remember when Robertson was good, like two weeks ago.
Seems like there have been a lot of crossups with Posada behind the plate this year. That was at least the third one I’ve seen since the ASB.
I’m Brian Fellows!
Gardner could probably be a decent punt returner.
The Kerry Wood era has been pretty thoroughly delightful. A few too many pitches out of the strike zone, but the man is just devilishly hard to square up.
Wood is around low 90s. For the year he is around 94. I assume that he has thrown harder most of the time as a Yankee, right?
Whoa, Wood has 10 BBs over 14 IP as a Yankee?
That is Edwar-esque.
Whoa, Wood has 10 BBs over 14 IP as a Yankee?
But he never gives up any hits and strikes out a lot of guys.
“Gardner could probably be a decent punt returner.”
Generally, or in reference to something on the field?
OT, here’s a link to a video of a bizarre fight between spectators at the US Open.
Generally, or in reference to something on the field?
Gardner made a nice running catch going forward of a wind-blown pop fly.
Generally, or in reference to something on the field?
From what I can tell following the radio, short fly to left, wind doing its tricks, and Gardner made a nice play.
Or it could be that in football, no bases to steal, or pitcher moves to read, so Gardner could actually, you know, do something with that speed. /snark
Radio voices said Nunez made a good play too.
I am really enjoying Kerry Wood.
Called strike one to Gardner was way above the zone plus a bit outside per GD.
[135/6] Ta. Probably he’s too light to survive a hit - those special teams guys get hurt a lot, don’t they?
Suzie and Serling ace meteorologists-“it is dark, the skies are opening and the sun is out.”
Robertson was getting a horseshit strike zone from Cederstrom. He pitched much better than the box score says he did.
So, Granderson is Opsing more than Gardner. How the hell did that happen?
I am really enjoying Kerry Wood.
Me too. All I asked from him was to be better than Chan Ho Park, and I think he’s managed to pull it off.
So, Granderson is Opsing more than Gardner. How the hell did that happen?
He sold his soul to Kevin Long.
[142] OPS weights OBP equally with SLG, so his 0.318 doesn’t hurt. FG has his wRC+ at 111 vs Gardner’s 127 (pre this game).
Mo probably isn’t strictly necessary, but no biggy.
Trying to bunt against Rivera is foolish on many different levels.
Rilke, I know you are right, and I know BG has been more valuable, but I was just pointing out how fast his numbers became respectable. Not ever comment is a jab at Gardner, he is a very good player, looks like an above average starter for a few years if he keeps this up.
I don´t think he will usually be a great player in seasons to come.
Mo is Mo.
That wasn’t even enough for Mo to work up a sweat. Give the Jays another three outs.
“Not ever comment is a jab at Gardner”
Nor did I read yours as such. My point was that you, like other saberminded folks, care more about better stats. Granderson’s #s give pretty different results for older and newer stats.
Yay Mo!
Yay win!
I’m so happy the Blue Jays started Morrow one more time.
Fwiw, see e.g. [36] for a semi-jab at Gardner, and my recent comments about benching him if he doesn’t steal when it’s compulsory.
[145] Should have added that Gardner’s been worse (coincidentally or not) since reinjuring his thumb during the period that Granderson’s being doing better.
In regards to [36], Fangraphs updates UZR once a week, so I wouldn’t check their WAR daily. I think the updates go in Monday morning.
Fwiw, see e.g. [36] for a semi-jab at Gardner
And [136]!
Can Gardner’s UZR have changed enough over a week in LF to add half a win over a season? If so they really should consider regressing it a lot.
I missed 36. It is not a big deal. Sorry if my comment came across as harsh.
Yay Mo, Yay win, Yay 8.5 games up with 27 to play.
“Sorry if my comment came across as harsh.”
Any miscommunication is my fault - we’re using my first language, plus poetic license.
Can Gardner’s UZR have changed enough over a week in LF to add half a win over a season? If so they really should consider regressing it a lot.
In order to pick up five defensive runs over another LF, he’d have to make somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 plays more than an average LF. He’s averaging about 1.8 chances per nine innings, so over seven games, he’d generally see something like 13 chances. The average LF would convert about 11 of those into outs.
He’d have to have seen 34 fieldable plays and made them all for his defense to be five runs better, although with UZR there is extra credit given for difficult chances, so maybe he could pick up five runs over fewer chance.
He did steal four or five bases this week without getting caught, so if they don’t update base running daily that may explain one run.
If the average went down this week on offense or defense that may also give him a bit of a boost over and above the actual value he accrued.
But yeah, it’s tough to see a situation where a player can pick up five runs of value over one week defensively.
Thanks.
It’ll be interesting to see if BBref feels the same way (relatively) after a while.
