Doesn’t it feel like CC’s ERA is closer to 5.00 than 3.00?  Anyway, he’s back, hopefully he’ll pitch well.  He’ll have to since the Yankees won’t be scoring off Brett Cecil.

Supposedly CC’s fastball control is off.  Presumably that means he’s less effective, but also less obviously dominating, and of course can’t go as deep into games.  On the other hand his FIP and xFIP and BB/9 and K/9 seem to be in line with his Yankee norms.  Etc etc.  Looks like just his BABIP is a bit higher than usual.

“Doesn’t it feel like CC’s ERA is closer to 5.00 than 3.00?”

I was watching YES lastnight and they put up CC’s ERA and I was shocked to see how low it was.  I really hope he pitches well tonight-I need some good news after the Lin fiasco at the Garden.

Welcome back, fatman.

Infield hits!

Losing McDonald is a stiff price to pay for the return of CC but I suppose it was a move that needed to be made.

[5] It always hurts to lose a True Yankee

[6] Dude cut off his dreads and shaved to be able to play for NY.  Dunno if he was told to expect he’d just spend a day in pinstripes.

CC is fucking cooked.

[8] Meme I missed?

[7]  Perhaps if he hadn’t crossed up Grandy, Dewayne Wise would be packing his bags.  But here we are.

Jonesy!

I love second half Andruw!

Andruw’s had some life in his bat lately.  I thought he was fucking cooked at the start of the season, but it seems I may have been wrong.

Brett who?

“Are we comfortable with a platoon of Andruw Jones/Raul Ibanez and DeWayne Wise on defense for the rest of the year? “

For the moment, I am not uncomfortable.

[0] “the Yankees won’t be scoring ten runs off Brett Cecil.”

Why would Nix steal there?  SO stupid.

[16] “the Yankees won’t be scoring nine runs off Brett Cecil.”

Stewart seems to put a lot of Scott Brosius swings on the ball - where he pulls it with all his might and it seems to jump off his bat. It’s just he has no power, so they’re all weak fly balls to left.

I really don’t understand what Nix was thinking. No outs and you’re already in scoring position and you’re up three runs in the second inning. Why steal there?

And the base-running follies continue.

Is there a record for most outs on the base paths that the Yankees are trying to break?

The Yankees are one lefty hitting OF away from having an amazing team.

Is there a record for most outs on the base paths that the Yankees are trying to break?

I think Jorge Posada’s got the top 10 outs on the bases seasons all by himself.  That’s a pretty high bar to shoot for.

Baseball 101 dont make the first or third out at third.  Jorge 101 if it feels good do it.

It’s really painful when the Yankees send Lonn Trost to shill soccer tickets on the baseball broadcast.

[20] Whenever this happens I always think it’s some kind of blown advance scouting issue. Like, Nix got a tip that in that particular situation (pitcher, catcher, count, etc.) there was such a high percentage of success that it made total sense to steal despite the whole 1st out/3rd out thing. No evidence for this theory of course.

Is CC back?

That steal of third was dumb, too.

Teixeira got lucky that that throw was offline.

I thought Posado appreciation day was on Sunday?

Is CC back?

Is that a fat joke?

What was the story with Rasmus—was he the one LaRussa hated?

Waldling yattering on about Marcus Welby, MD.  It’s like they once heard Vin Scully and are doing the most pathetic imitation of him, ever.

Is CC back?

Seems like he’s got his best fastball velocity of the season so far.

What was the story with Rasmus—was he the one LaRussa hated?

Yeah.  There was a hubbub about him listening to his dad instead the Cards’ hitting coach.  Not sure what other stuff was going on but they seemed anxious to dump him for pennies on the dollar.

[34] I think it was the facial hair.

bunt hits!

Time for the double steal.

What’s gonna happen if like four teams tie for the second wild card?  Oh please, please, please.

[38] The Red Sox win the tie breaker and go on to win the world series.  Obviously.

[38] Selig declares all games to be playoff games.

It’s a little disconcerting that Paulie doesn’t know what Ted Williams hit in 1941.

Youk just lit up the TWN for a 3 run jack.

[41]
You’re kidding.

Come on ball, get up, stretch…you can put it on the board…yes!!

Never thought I’d root for him but GO YOUK.  Have a great 2nd half cept against us.  Piss off the townies.

I’ve never understood the Vin Scully shoe-licking.
The best answer I gives is that he occasionally throws a preternaturally, impossibly appropriate and yet unexpected metaphor about the meteorological conditions or the phase of the moon or something into his game description.
Which sounds annoying to me - I don’t think he’s going to be improvisationally spouting world-class literature, just call the game.
But I don’t even recall too much of that - just consistent melting about how the game has never, ever seen a pitcher anywhere close to the wonderfulness that is Eric Gagne.

Actually [44] may be the answer to [46].

Mandy is one of Kay’s favorite songs.  Guess he really is hip.

I like Vin Scully.  But he’s right on the line between genius and awful, mostly on the right side of that line.  Emulating Vin Scully is a path fraught with peril.

CC’s FB command is still a bit off

46 Sixty minutes did an interesting story on Ray Charles and Scully.  Scully does have a great rhythm.  He’s a throwback.  Scully, Red Barber, Mel Allen; Clem McArthy boxing and horse racing.

Ever hear McCarthy’s call of Louis/Schmelling or Citation’s Derby

Hell hath no fury like a Youkilis scorned.

With Vin you either love him or you hate him. I happen to love the guy. In my household instead of counting sheep we fall asleep to Dodger home games on Roku. But, I can see why some people wouldn’t like his style.

Next time you hear him do a game, see if you catch him ever saying uh or um. Unlike just about every other broadcaster he’s got this uncanny ability to say exactly what he wants to say and he hardly ever stumbles.

[51]
I once listed to recorded broadcasts of some of those guys.
Red Barber made everything, no matter how dramatic, sound like nothing had happened.
FGas, what is the “genius” part like? What “sets him apart?”
To me it sound particularly different from most of those drawly older announcers, perhaps except for the attempting a bit more to be gratuitously “poetic.”

[54]
I didn’t love him or hate him when I was in LA, I just didn’t get why he was particularly better or worse than anyone else.
Scooter - now there was a genuinely, demonstrably “different” announcer.
But I appreciate your comment - at least it asserts something clear enough to make sense.

One thing that stuck out to me with Scully was when he was doing one of the Yankees/Dodgers games.  He told a story about how Jorge Posada’s dad made him do a bunch of weird chores throughout his youth with no explanation.  It turns out they were all done with the idea of strengthening his wrists and forearms to help him become a better hitter.  A Mr. Miyagi thing.

It was amazing to me that I’d probably seen Posada bat at least 5000 times and never heard that story.  I found it pretty impressive that a guy like Scully who could surely coast on his laurels was doing research to dig up a factoid like that.

[54] Plus he was great that time hall-of-famer Whitey Ford was bombarded with pretzels.

[57] Exactly.

I remember making fun of that too. He tells a high school or a college story of every player. He is fun to listen.

[57] And yet Scully never told the hands-pissing story.

Why is Chad Qualls warming in a 3-0 game?

Qualls? Why is he even warming up?

Good job pen.

How about some runs so Robertson and Soriano can get the night off?

We need some serious Quallsproofing this inning.

Bad bunts are not Qualls-proofing.

that’s much better.

Yay Stewie!

Still not Quallsproof.

Quallsproof yet?

Who misses Gardner when you can watch Stewart running the bases?

Getting closer.

Still not Quallsproof.

This team is really ruining their RISP average.

a 3 run HR should give Quallsproof

Is it too early to start booing?

Still not Quallsproof.

That shift is going to kill Arod, as it takes him away the approach to go up the middle which is his best approach, I think

I just hope we can avoid getting swept at home.

Michael Kay needs therapy.

Michael Kay needs to not have airtime to discuss his food phobias.

[78,79] Explanation?

I think I have a Chad Qualls phobia.

80 Kay never ate a condiment in his life

Or a banana, apparently.

among other things, like bananas eggs.

[82] Yes, but where does he stand on the subject of bananas ?

So Sabathia was all right tonight?

Why not use Rapada vs Lind? He hasn’t pitched after the break.

Man, I remember lusting after Qualls back to his Houston days. Now he’s just horrible.

Chad Qualls is BP management strategy, right?
Unless he gives us a “lightning in a bottle” thing, he’ll absorb as many innings (low-leverage ones, we hope) as possible (we can call it “maximal proctoring”) and then be jettisoned when someone like Pin’s favorite baseball player is ready to take his place.
Resting the pitchers upon whom they actually anticipate relying when it counts, right?

Rapader time.

Chad Qualls is BP management strategy, right?

Yes.  You hope he can get six outs before allowing six runs.  So far we’re at four outs and one run with two more on the bases.

I think Rapada needs more fielding drills.

So much for that night off.  I really don’t feel like kneeling tonight…

Rapada is an idiot.  Get the sure out.  He took his sweet time.

Should of kept CC in there. Can’t anyone else gets outs around here?

Kneel bitches.

[97] You mean on defense, right ? ‘cause…
