Aaron Judge has the second highest slugging percentage on the team.

Seems legit.

And K Karter has a worse slugging% than TOE that says it all.  Headley’s even lower but his OBP is 50 points higher and he can field his position or Karter’s.
Meanwhile Choi is slugging 503 which is lower than Austin’s but higher than Clint’s at Scranton.

Ten 1 run losses since June 1st, only the Phillies can match that.

3 9-16

That half way thru a season a supposed contender sends out a 1b with an OPS under 700 indicates a GM who refuses to admit a mistake.

Headley doesn’t totally stink. He’s just not very good and is paid too much for someone who is not very good.

Tonight We really need the Hero Tanaka and not the Zero Tanaka. Has Sterling used that one yet?

The good news is Stroman has a really hard time stringing together multiple good starts, and he just held down Baltimore last out.

Stroman is also a lot worse on the road.

If Andujar is so weak defensively isn’t it just possible that he’d be a better fit at 1B? Worth exploring.

Speaking of 1B and the Yankees need for at least a minimal upgrade
#Yankees GM Brian Cashman said that they could send Greg Bird for exploratory surgery to determine the cause of his pain.—@BryanHoch

Per Bryan Hoch:

•  Cashman said that they could send Bird for exploratory surgery to determine the cause of his pain.

•  Cashman said need better production form 1B (me: No fooling), going with Headley at 3B.

Also “Who do you want me to play there? Headley’s our third baseman. I’m sorry you don’t like it.” - Brian Cashman

I’m sorry I don’t like it, too.

Which is pretty much the same as saying: I’m sorry he doesn’t play good baseball, too.

Because if he did, we’d like it.

TOE buzzkill

We needed Carter up in that situation.

Walk, HBP, walk so of course he swings at the first pitch.

Every time Toe gets a hit the announcers talk about how much he helps them win -doing the little things blah blah blah.  that stupid DP really might cost them.

Any one here think that Judge in the HR derby is a bad idea?

I never want to see one of ours in the HR Derby. It fucks up their swing and approach and head for the rest of the season.

Send Smellsbury. Or Headley.

TOE’s DP gonna cost us the game.

Fortunately, the announcers can’t be talking about that too often.

And yes - however uncertain the posited danger, there’s very little upside to counter it, right?

Stop nibbling.

You can see me? (puts down the bag of chips, nervous)

There’s another thing I never like to see.

Toe passes the baton to Carter.

They’re like a well-oiled machine. Can’t get past the both of them unscathed.

Sign Loney.

This team just can not take advantage. Well done TOE, sacrificing in front of Karter not smart, and Kris you couldn’t at least strike out?

Counterpoint: Judge mashing monster taters during glorified BP will be wildly entertaining. LA Times had a piece debunking the “HR Derby ruins guys” myth that was fairly convincing. I think if there was a genuine risk of it harming players, the teams would put the kibosh on.

[26] Yes, I’m not sure I believe it’s a big danger. But the only upside is the one you cite. So you’d have to really care about that to be in favor of the thing.

I am so happy about Judge but the Bird injury is by far the hardest thing to swallow. Watching Carter night after night just makes it worse.

Not quite sure why Frazier be doesn’t hit 7th.

Isnt’ the point of this entire baseball enterprise to be entertained? I’ll be entertained, at least.

I’d be pretty damned entertained if Sancho hit one out, here.

Put ‘em on, leave ‘em on mode.

what “look” is Steve Pearce going for? Guy who warms his hands around trash barrel fire?

Leading in the 7th a bad sign.

Guzman with a nice outing tonight, and topped out at 102.

Beware the eighth

You mean after they don’t score enough early and then just stop scoring, period? Yes, they should beware.

36-38. Agree.

Is Tanaka back? Looked pretty good , no?

It’s absurd that their best bet is probably to still bring Tanaka out for the 8th.

If you walk Carter, you probably should get DFAed.

That may be the best AB we see out of Carter the rest of the year.

Sigh…this is a logical move, but holy fuck, am I nervous.

One for two so far in locating the curve!

One for three! Ugh.

You know things have gotten dire when you glance at Gameday and see Betances is in and think, oh fuck.

Now imagine if you hadn’t missed with those other curves, Dellin, imagine how much better that at-bat would have gone (and it still went well just by locating even TWO curves for strikes).

Hey, Dellin, please stop sucking.

Judge in the HR Derby is fine.  Batting practice doesn’t hurt players and that’s all the HR Derby is.  Harmless fun.

I’m not convinced by Frazier.  He REALLY seems like a guy pitchers will learn to exploit, and his throws from the OF suck.

Been there done this.

He’s being squeezed a bit, but he’s also not responding to the ump’s strike zone at ALL.

Dellin is going to get punished here.

51 I doubt he’s ready but with Hixie and Fowler out there’s no other options.

That was unbelievably stupid. Donaldson is slow as fuck!

[55]  Come back, Mason Williams!

Come Back, Ben Francisco!

That was a unexpected.

Sweet DP.  Sanchez hasn’t been good at throwing people out this year and Betances is so slow to the plate.

But Donaldson is also slow as fuck!

Time for insurance runs.

[60]  Gift horse, Brian…

So weird for the TV guys to have to decide whether to go to commercial or not, waiting to see if Toronto was going to challenge the call.

[60]  Gift horse, Brian…

Oh, totally, but damn, dudes, they would have had Morales up as the go-ahead run! They totally bailed Betances out.

That said, great pitch by Betances for strike three.

Bad read by Judge.

Holy fucking power by Sanchez! Dude just, like, golfed at it and almost hit it out!

60 And he was just barely out

Morales doesn’t scare me.  Betances pitching to hitters, that scares me.

Let’s fuck this up and then let Chapman blow it.

Man, Judge is just a freaking HUGE man.

[65]  That’s why he’s ALSO in the HR Derby wink

That wasn’t a good idea from the second inning on?

[71]  Jeez Hoss I just tuned in.  Tough crowd!

I don’t like the wave, but I don’t MIND it, either, but in the bottom of the 8th inning with two runners on? People, come on!

Oh no.  Bases loaded no outs for Headley.  Only worse situation would be if Carter was up.

And he was just barely out

Oh yeah, anyone else and it would have been a great idea. They would have stole the base easily.

[73]  I think we have to give up on the wave.  It’s not going away and we have better things to expend energy on, like hating Headley.

Just make contact, Chase! A fucking DP would be okay even!

I’m fine not complaining about the wave in GENERAL, but come on, not at this point in the game!

He made contact. smile

Hey, I was going easy on you - could have said “after one out in the first”!

That “blows the game open”? They JUST blew a 3-run lead TWO GAMES ago!

Man bites dog !!!!

That was unexpected.

[79] This is one of those “cats and dogs, living together” moments.

81 Ha ha

Sanchez is such a shitty baserunner. Didi is a good baserunner. The Yankees could have had three runs there easily.

At least Ellsbury continues to disappoint.

How the fuck do you just give up on the play like the Blue Jays did there? No way that Headley should be able to score there.

Also, Didi, for the love of Aaron Judge, DON’T SLIDE INTO HOME PLATE HEADFIRST YOU FUCKING MORON! I just talked about how good of a baserunner you were.

LOL Brian.

GD says Tepera got an “assist” on the missed catch by the catcher.  How do you get an assist on an out that doesn’t happen?

LOL Carter.

At least Carter continues to disappoint.

Karter learned a new trick.

He’s not alone, isn’t that sweet?

[97]  That’s all we ever want.  Someone to share life experiences with.

Morales doesn’t scare me.  Chapman pitching to hitters, that scares me.

Oh Chapman give up hits if you must but don’t damage the goods.
