Athletics (43-56) @ Yankees (58-39), Saturday, July 23, 2011, 1:05pm
OAK: Rich Harden (29, RHP, 1-1, 5.00) vs. NYY: A.J. Burnett (34, RHP, 8-7, 4.19)
To be honest, yesterday’s game feels like a loss to me. Phil Hughes couldn’t get out of the fifth inning last night after being staked to a 14-2 lead through three innings
against one of the worst offensive teams in baseball.
I was encouraged by his last start, but this one pretty much killed that. Perhaps I’m being impatient, but I’m very doubtful about Hughes being a key contributor for the rest of this season, and the Yankees probably need to start considering giving his spot to one of the candidates who deserve it more.
How do you justify Hughes starting over Ivan Nova or even Hector Noesi at this point?
There’s also the annoyance of the team piling on run after run the night after they couldn’t score two in nine innings.
Anyway, maybe they’ll get a win that feels like a win today and hit the magic 20 games over .500 mark that’s been elusive so far this year.

Not for nothing but:
Pitcher A: 42.0IP 66H 45ER 29K:19BB 9.64 ERA
Pitcher B: 25.2IP 38H 27ER 13K:12BB 9.47 ERA
Nuney at 2b could be an adventure.
I wanted to the comment on the NY Times article from the last thread (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/24/sports/baseball/kei-igawa-the-lost-yankee.html ).
I thought it was a great piece of journalism, one of the best articles I had read in the NY Times in a long time.
I had a very close Japanese friend whose dad died of cancer, and when I heard it was a shock to me. How did I not know my friend’s father had cancer? And he told me, the Japanese have a word for enduring something in silence: gaman. If you’re feeling tasked with something you feel is impossible, you just put your head down and do your best. You don’t feel sorry for yourself, you don’t start a blog, you don’t complain. And my friend admitted that he couldn’t even tell me much anyway, because his father always kept his family in the dark on his medical condition as much as possible because even doing that would be against what his father considered gaman.
That all came to mind as I was reading this article.
Although, letting in set in for a few minutes, I wonder: if Igawa wanted to pitch in the majors so long, couldn’t he work out some sort of buyout with the Yankees? They could both agree to pay him 50% of what’s left on his contract, and then he’s free to break camp with an NL team in a big park and have a legit chance of making a major league roster.
I can’t read that article because I didn’t notice the NYT paywall now includes mobile access and I burned my 20 articles on my phone.
Amy Winehouse, RIP. Don’t know anything about her but I like the horns in that song and the way she sings behind the beat.
[3] I sincerely hope that Igawa makes it back to ML and is successful. It’s really too bad the Yankees have basically locked him out, but understandable. Not trading him to SD in 2007 was a slap in the face to him and Cashman.
[4] Try “In Private” browsing. It seemed to work for me before.
[5] Sad but hardly unexpected. Talented singer. Was just reading about her soon to be released duet with Tony Bennett.
[4] stop the page before it loads entirely. Seriously. It works.
Burnett!
Bad Burnett!
Nuney!
always an adventure.
Cashman also said he was prepared to trade Igawa to the Padres in 2007 after San Diego claimed him off waivers, but “ownership was not willing to let him go yet.”

Might be time for a PH here
Is everybody out jogging with Snuggles or afraid FGAS is on line or just hate watching AJ and Hughes?
How’s Swamp Turkey looking so far?
The Yankees need to score to make me feel better. Single #3012 for the future hall of famer.
We should be able to hit this feckless Canadian.
Two more strike outs and Tex will be taking the golden shower.
Prediction if Yanks score 2 or 3 to take the lead AJ will give it back the next inning.
[19] One must question the premise.
It was a syllogism-if/then not a prediction of the if part. Of course all may be moot in 5-4-3-2-1 .....
[4] This happened to me too.
[21] The if part will not occur.
I hate it when swamp turkey goes on one of his wildness jags.
Premature meltdown. FU AJ stop bitching. You come up small so consistently.
Fuck this noise.
This inning is interminable.
Swish goes boom!
what the heck are you swinging at, martin?
AJ, Wade and Swisher prempted my prediction
Melvin Laird good defensively, offense not so much?
oh for pete’s sake…
I just got here. My first thought, as Logan came in, was, why on earth would you bring in a lefty to face Matsui?
Logan wears a black robe and carries a scythe versus lefties (more Monte Python then Bergman however)
Lucky hit into the shift. Is it a fact that Tex will never be able to adjust to the shift.
[34] Have you looked at what Matsui wears versus lefties?
Martin, Nuney and Laird coming up.
Why was last night a blip for Hughes instead of the game before?
BUNTING?
Must PH for Laird unless Nuney homers. Drilled Kay? Really!
Michael Kay has a problem with judging fly balls, I guess. Turning into John Sterling.
574 OPS in his last 64 PA. This should turn out beautifully.
Grant “Mel’s job is already done” Balfour
Personal pride also means knowing when it’s time to retire.
The race to .700:
1. Martin .697
2. Nunez .692
3. Jeter .685
4. Posada .681
Things are starting to heat up, folks! And yes…this is 4/9 of the Yankees current regular starting lineup.
On second thought let the kid hit. Jorge last 14 days 148 179 148. We need a DH, sorry Jorge its been great but….“The time has come today”
This is starting to cause resentment. He was a terrific player. He’s a petulant baby. And he’s really reduced to guessing and bailing out at the plate. He needs to be gone yesterday.

The power is less than ideal, but you have to appreciate that he’s taking his walks…right?
Plus we can’t discount that Jorge’s a plus plus base runner.
Gardner installed as leadoff hitter just in time to miss taking advantage of his hot streak.
And Jeter now is going to .....I say strike out, being optimistic
I haven’t been following the game so maybe the zone has been at least consistent, but GD thinks Gardner was very K’d there.
It was close ... reeeeeal close. Bailey was not happy.
CT?
[53] GD thinks ball one was an obvious strike as well.
[52] GD sucks. Welke has been pretty bad, too, though.
CTer
Ultimate CT
CTest?
Too bad Arod isn’t due up. I’d walk Cano in a heartbeat.
WTF Robbie. You don’t have to fucking swing, there’s no such fucking rule. Imagine how good he COULD BE if he didn’t beat himself so often.
Guess that’s why I’m not a manager.
Why walk him, just throw him crap and he’ll probably bail you out. Sure you’re rolling the dice but if I’m Melvin I’d rather have Cano swing at something out of the zone then put the winning run on and pitch to Swisher.
Beckett vs Mariners-I’d say we’re a lock to be 3 behind before tomorrow.
What is CT?
Cock tease
I learned more of interest from the excellent [3] than that article.
Edit: thanks to [8]. Though I’ll go back to being locked out.
[14] I managed to beat the heat and go running this morning. Then I went to go see Harry Potter, which is mediocre at best.
Also, the Yankees suck.
[68] The first half of #7 had some wonderful moments along with the longueurs it inherited from the novel. Except for the musculature of the dragon and the protection spell on the castle, I thought this one was just going through the motions for the most part. The Harry actor not being up to carrying the emotional weight didn’t help.
[69] I’m just really glad it was relatively short. I don’t know if I could have sat through 3 hours of it. IMO, the ending of the book was rather disappointing, the film was even worse.
I just learned that Rowling originally wanted Terry Gilliam to direct the series. Could you imagine that? I think he would have done a spectacular job with the first several films, but I’m not sure he could have managed the darkness needed for the later films. Either way, it would have completely changed the films.
70 Brazil and Twelve Monkeys weren’t dark? I happily missed every Potter movie.
[71] i got sucked into watching the one before the last one and was bored silly. Game of Thrones is more my speed.
Time Bandits scared the shit out of me as a kid.
And I just watched it again last week on Netflix instant.
Fantasy fiction and blockbusters not for me. I do hope Another Earth is good.
[71] Brazil has a strange feel. I wouldn’t call it entirely dark, I totally brain farted 12 Monkeys. I would certainly sign up for a Gilliam Harry Potter series though.
