Angels (63-52) @ Yankees (69-44), Tuesday, August 9, 2011, 7:05pm

LAA: Dan Haren (30, RHP, 12-6, 2.81) vs. NYY: A.J. Burnett (34, RHP, 8-9, 4.54)

There are certain series I dread every year.  Every series in Fenway, and every series against the California Angels.  Luckily, the Yankees have the edge in the pitching matchup as A.J. Burnett makes about $5M more per season than Haren, so he’s clearly the better pitcher.

According to Yankees.com, the Yankees lined up their rotation for this series.  If that’s the case, why is Burnett pitching tonight?

My feelings about baseball, in the aftermath of Sunday’s extravaganza, are summed up perfectly by the following:

Major: (taking the paper) Strike, strike, strike. Why do we bother, Fawlty?
Fawlty: Er, didn’t know you did, Major.

SG, did it specify the outcome pursuant to which the team lined up its rotation?

I have a question: why does the new Yankee Stadium have those massive letters in the outfield that say “YANKEE STADIUM”? Are people having trouble remembering what stadium they’re in?

why does the new Yankee Stadium have those massive letters in the outfield that say “YANKEE STADIUM”?

New York’s a two team baseball town, and let’s just say that people who are slow-witted enough to be fans of the other team in town are possibly slow-witted enough to show up at the wrong stadium.  Think of it as a gentle way to keep the riff-raff out.

Who was that pitching in an A.J. Burnett mask?

Good AJ or early CT?

Ugh, thanks to this being on my9, I’m stuck with grandma and grandpa Yankee.

[4] Plausible. As is my theory that the sign emits brain waves which causes people to empty their pockets faster.

Let me guess, Burnett will pitch his best game of the year and give up one run and final score will be 1-0…

I think it’s now legal in NY for me to marry Granderson.

I think Serling is high today.

Let me guess, Burnett will pitch his best game of the year and give up two runs and final score will be 2-1…

[8]
If they’re there, their pockets are empty already.
[see, all 3 homophones - consecutively! uh-oh…]

Curtis says fie upon the notion of a 1-0 loss!

I like [4].

Was it really Nunez’s fault for not covering third base last game?

Nice clip: Jorge taking it the right way, not sulking, mentoring the young guys in the dugout.
In this case, talking to Gardner.
Probably about baserunning.
Given all his veteran experience, that can only lead to good things, right?

Is it overly cynical to view this start as doing nothing but solidifying Burnett’s spot in the rotation so that he’ll continue to get bombed for the rest of the season without any thought of taking him out of the rotation?

[17] No, but for me this start will be why the Yankees lose the ALDS.

it is high, it is far, it is caught count: 2, unless I missed one.

[19] nope, you’re right.  I really hate listening to games.

but the actual home run was not called.

Bobby Hustle comes back to haunt us

Per Hoch, “In case you were wondering, John Sterling did not think that homer was as sweet as candy.”

[23] My vague memory is that he has in a previous game called Abreu’s home run with the LAAAA as if he were a Yankee, but it’s likely that the Yankees were ahead.

[17]
SG, I think we’re all thinking that.

Is it overly cynical to view this start as doing nothing but solidifying Burnett’s spot in the rotation so that he’ll continue to get bombed for the rest of the season without any thought of taking him out of the rotation?

Or AJ will just be AJ?

[17] Don’t worry fellas. AJ got this.

I love intentional walks…

Has there ever been a Yankees pitcher who retired a slap-hitting Angels non-factor batter in a RISP situation?

Burnett is an asshole.  How’s that for an insightful comment?

[30] Accurate, but not very insightful.

Wild pitch to score another run.  Awesome.

That went to Veras in a hurry.

AJ is a force of nature.  He is quiet, almost invisible, but when he strikes, it is with the suddenness of the lightning.

[33]
Dr Puj,
o paraphrase the movie “Peeping Tom”:
Do you know what the most inevitable thing in the world is?
It is - inevitability.

Serling “there it goes to deep right, it is high, it is foul”  AJ day is always such a joy.  The best #2 in the game.

[36] #2 as in the excretion of feces.

Corey Wade = pitcher

If I hear anything along the lines of “he just had one bad inning” I think my head will explode.  So if I don’t post for a few days figure that’s what happened.

Corey Wade = pitcher

The least you could do is spell his name correctly.

And WTF?  If you don’t think your pitcher can get Maicer F’ing Izturis out, don’t intentionally walk him.  Get a new pitcher…

Turns out the awful tv smoking ad has a radio counterpart; it is not pleasant, but could have been even worse..

*Gameday Audio radio, dunno if its actually the same ads as the station.

[41] Dwyane Wade = pitcher

On the plus side, the Yankees have gotten three hits in six innings, so they should get at least one more in this game.

[45] - 1.5 more hits!

And yes, [42] is probably the 11th Commandment.

I really should go back to Nova Scotia, for the sake of the Yankees and all humanity.  Which of course excludes the TWN.

On the plus side, the Yankees have gotten three hits in six innings, so they should get at least one more in this game.

My amazement never ceases at what you can learn from statistics.

At least Swisher and Chavez made Haren throw 12 pitches to get them out.

[49] a morale booster

Nuney!  He’s gotta know that if he wants to stay a Yankee, he needs to get hung up between first and second while Martin scores.

We’ve exceeded our allotment of hits and runs.

According to Yankees.com, the Yankees lined up their rotation for this series. If that’s the case, why is Burnett pitching tonight?

Where AJ is concerned, the only “lined up” that makes sense is “line up against a wall and shot”

[53] agreed

Leaving someone in for 120 pitches is not optimal strategy. But then again, so is playing Mathis.

Captain CT er Clutch yeah that’s what I meant Captain Clutch that’s it.

A disturbing number of runs have been scored with two outs.

That was unexpected.

Poor management taketh, poor management giveth away.

something is wrong with SG’s program

Wasn’t Smokahashi supposed to start tomorrow?

Whatever.

[61] I’m pretty sure a crazy person is managing the Angels at this moment. More crazy than even Scioscia

[61] I’m pretty sure a crazy person is managing the Angels at this moment. More crazy than even Scioscia

It’s Bizzaro Binder.

Schteeve is managing the Angels for the benefit of the Yankees.

Yeah, I’m currently stuck with the riff-raff…..

What would you name a dog if you had one?

Way to go Robertson!  He got out the extremely dangerous Izturis.

Wow, Robertson retired teh dangerous Maicer Izturis.

edit: dapuj, get out of my head!

Well, I had him pegged as extremely dangerous, you as only dangerous.

I’m obviously more paranoid than you.

[68] Humpty Hump.

Just got in. As usual, a pitcher was overachieving and we pressed our luck.

I realize saying that we always wait until a pitcher runs out of gas before going to the pen is a bit like saying you always find your keys in the last place you look, but can’t we see the pattern ? Pitching AJ is like handling a “hot” snake. The longer you press your luck, it’s only a matter of time.

I really do think we need to consider shortening up starters and throwing wave after wave of RP at teams. We’re certainly carrying enough of them, and it isn’t like our bench players are so fucking splendid that we’d miss any two of them anyway.

[68] Mathis

Now, more than ever, I am very glad not to be SicSemper’s dog.

[73] - No whammy, no whammy, no whammy….STOP!

Dammit.

In other news, Chien-Ming Wang just threw a 6 inning shutout with a 11-4 GB-FB ratio… his first good start in like 2.5 years….

grante it was against the pathetic Cubs but still it’s good to see him back in the Bigs.

[77] When do we start getting mad at Cashman for letting him go?  I vote for now.

[75] Fine. See if I scratch YOUR belly.

[77] - I saw him in his first start in DC a few weeks ago.  It was sad to watch how hard he was being hit by the Nats.  He was one of my favorite players in the years he was on the Yanks.

Mo loves getting the lead runner on bunts…

Edit: I mean how hard he was hit by the Mets.  Duh.

[80] I was a big fan his myself.  He was such a unique pitcher.  It’s great to hear he pitched well tonight.

[81] - Agreed.  And I just liked his demeanor in everything I read about him.  Seemed like a good guy.

Ughh.  WWWMW?

Welcome to WWWMW.

It was sad to watch how hard he was being hit by the Nats.

His own team was hitting him?  Ouch.

Good for Wang.  I wish him nothing but the best, as long as his interests don’t conflict with our interests.

I hate WWWMW…

Oh my Mo…..

Wow. Po cooked. Mo falling off a cliff.

Good thing Jeter’s still got it.

Kind of had a feeling I wanted to see Sori, sorry.  Abreu with 4 hrs all year.

Mo hasn’t blown six in a season since ‘03.

Nunez is starting to grow on me.  As long as he’s not throwing, he’s a decent ballplayer.

Why did he run?!?

Not Mo’s best year.  I hope this is an August glitch leading to lights out PS Mo.

Every year, I have a friend who panics after Mo blows a save or two early on.  Every year, I tell him I don’t see anything wrong with Mo.

This year, I did not wait for my friend to bring it up… I thought something just looked different to me.  Help me out… am I crazy?

Tell me I am crazy please.

So after playing their best ball of the season, the yanks are on the verge to lose 3 in a row against their division’s and wild card’s rivals. The sad thing: Mo and CC were the ones to blame.

Didn’t Mo have a bad August a few years back.  Blew a couple against the Os.  He’ll get it together….I hope.

Tell me I am crazy please.

I haven’t looked at the numbers in much detail, but yeah, this year he hasn’t seemed quite as dominant on a pitch-by-pitch basis.  Complaining about his results would have seemed crazy since he was still effective, but I agree, there’s something off.

Whewwwwww.  Way to bust it down the line.

Oh yay, Teixeira as the last hope.  I bet he flies out.

[99] Game over. I’m not even going to wait for it.
