Can the old and tired Yankees do the unimaginable and sweep the young and energetic Angels? It won’t be easy with Jered Weaver on the mound for California Anaheim Los Angeles. Weaver’s having a great year so far, although his velocity is down a bit from the last few seasons. He’s got a .223 BABIP against (vs. .271 career) and a HR/FB rate of 4.5%(vs. 7.4% career). It’d be cool if those two numbers corrected a bit today and moved him closer to his 3.94 xFIP.
Comments
Pitcher with an unsustainably low BABIP? Sounds like a good time to help him out by stranding runners on base.

Proof that the Yankees could lose a game in an even more horrifying manner than we’ve seen so far. Can they do it today? Tune in and find out!
[2] Not sure what is more horrifying, losing a game like that or that ump somehow missing that call.
Halos Heaven is a special place, sort of like the reverse, Angels version of WW.
Threadjumping…
Stewart hasn’t been so bad this year. He can’t really hit, but his BA is decent, and putting the ball in play is nice—maximizes the OBP of the batters before you. Still he’s nowhere near Cervelli or even this year’s Martin as a hitter. If Martin is hurting, he should go on the DL and Cervelli should start. Or if Martin would be okay with more rest, then Stewart should go. I really can’t figure Cervelli in the minors unless Girardi really wanted a defense-first catcher as backup. I know some like Cervelli’s defense, but, with the caveat that I never know what I’m talking about, I don’t think he’s that good and maybe Girardi doesn’t either.
[5] Cervelli isn’t exactly lighting up AAA, I’m not so sure he’d be better than Stewart.
[4] It’s “special,” all right. Oof.
[6] Look at his ML numbers though. Did he take a step back, or is he having a down year because he’s pissed and has to ride the bus every day?
I glanced at HH—it didn’t seem so bad. Not GOOD, but not WW level. What did I miss?

Oh. Thanks.
Aybar… Really?
Welp, this is starting swimmingly.
I can see Pujols, but still… Aybar?
Aybar had two HR entering the series.
Snark backfire.
The Knicks are fucking morons. It’s really nice to be able to root for one team not owned by an idiot.
ARod!
Alex is done, stick a fork in ‘im.
Boom goes the A-bomb! Suck it, hippie
I know it’s statpadding, but I’ll take it.
That was an old and tired HR.
Why are they showing 09 highlights?
I’m gonna continue to take credit for the resurgence of A-Rod.
The comments to the HH post seemed to treat it right.
haha. Spike Lee caught a bat. Who could have predicted that?
Weaver just destroyed Tex in that AB.
7 twos is the kind of poker hand that gets you beat up, Michael.
NOT A DOUBLE PLAY!
Martin for DH.
Some solid base-ruining there.
And now, today’s moment of DERP.
That would have been better if Jeter didn’t fluff it. But I’ll take three runs in the first two innings against Weaver.
I know Jorge is your BFF but still the homage is uncalled for.
What did the Knicks do?
Hell of a catch.
Grandy out-Trouts Trout.
Gardner would have caught that
That range.
But damn, why play Trout so shallow?
Suck it, Trout.
Yeah, I’m not sure why Granderson was so shallow. Hell of a catch though.
How often do you see it happen—a guy makes a great defensive play one inning, then leads off the next with a weak popup.
There’s that singles hitter.
A single? Whoop de damn do.
This team does not respect scoreless inning streaks. Shameful.
A single? Whoop de damn do.
Granderson always plays shallow…
Please give Cano money to stay here.
I don’t think that 2-0 pitch was a strike.
Today is Posado appreciation day.
And now, today’s moment of double DERP.
To echo Tree, Yanks are Posadoing the hell out of this game.
Cano and Arod making Jeter look good.
You gotta be kidding me.
At this point it’s not surprising.
Horrible on both ends.
Once picked off, you gotta stay alive for the runner on third.
Runner on third needs to either park his ass on the base and accept RC being dumb, or race for home.
I think most of us knew a DP was coming there. I just…why did it have to be that way?
[54] see [49]
Somewhere, Jorge Posada nods his head approvingly.
The most pathetic baserunning ever! Cano’s an idiot, that was the first time I’ve ever seen that work. I dont blame Arod as much. Was a double steal called?
Yankees’ goal today must be to get everyone in the lineup thrown out on the bases at least once.
[56] The Yankees will be announcing that they hired him as a special advisor later this evening.
Guess I really don’t want to know what happened. Probably would have to see a replay anyway. Happy thoughts…
So wait. Cano and ARod derp it up on the basepaths, so Weaver gets credit for two outs and his ERA goes down slightly despite throwing no pitch on the play. Yet when a pitcher makes a fielding error that leads to a run, it’s counted as unearned.
Baseball is silly.
Aha! Cone says Nova needs consistency.
I thought for sure Ibanez was going to muff that one.
[63] Seriously…what was Jeter doing on that one? I thought for sure that was his ball and he just slowed down to let Iganez take it. Weird.
What he needs, of course, is girl on his side.
Or, perhaps more girl on his side.
[60] A-Rod on third, Cano on first, Weaver bluffed (not very hard) to third but Cano bought it and started to go. Cano picked off, A-Rod thrown out at the plate.
The horrible thing is that next year that move will be called a balk.
[64] Probably thinking that Gardner would already be standing there.
They really blew a chance to at least get Weaver’s pitch count up with that horrendous base running. Now he’s got a nice manageable pitch count.
what was that you were saying about pitch count?
O’Neil cracking himself up with fond memories of the Great Gazoo.
Ibanez actually looks like a fielder. Pretty good for someone signed to play DH.
Is Cano not too bright (see Swisher eg) or simply in need of Ritalin?
Let’s not forget he’s had some horrible misplays—balls over the head etc. But he’s looked better recently, and his arm is okay.
Why does Pujols get to bat in every inning?
[72] I dunno, but A-Rod muffed that play too and he seems pretty smart.
I’m not really digging all these Yankee fielders letting Ibanez call them off for balls.
Michael Kay’s stories are riveting in their banality.
You ever get the feeling that your team is hitting really well and then you look up and you’ve only got 3 runs?
mwhahahahahahaha
Wow. Just wow.
I love bunting.
That’s 4 baserunning DERPs, by 4 different baserunners. Amazing.
Arod at least made them execute a play.
They really deserve to lose this ballgame. What a truly disgraceful display of baserunning.
You gotta be fucking kidding me.
The Yankees really want to keep Weaver in this game as long as possible.
Ok, so that’s 4/9 starters…
[82] Can’t blame Chavez for Martin’s terrible bunt.
Oh WTF.
I wonder how far this Trumbo homer is going to go?
Why doesn’t Nova pick off both guys now?
YES needs a new show Yankee Suckography and this game will be the premier
I love Cone in the booth, but his tendency to repeat a point over and over every so often annoys the shit outta me.
That was an awesome catch
What a catch!
Grandy’s got some wheels.
Saving them out there.
Until he is next one to make a base running error.
You know which team would not have scored a run in that situation? Spoiler alert: The Yankees.
Nova has an awesome sneer.
ugh.
