With a lefty on the mound, we’re back to Cano #3 and TAFKAAR#4. Let’s see if Phil Hughes can be more efficient today. What will be higher today, the # of innings pitched by Hughes or the # of errors + CS by Nun-E?

So Gardner is sick. When did “the flu” become “flu-like symptoms”? Is someone afraid of a lawsuit by the flu if in fact it was not an influenza virus that caused the symptoms?
Go Yankees! Go Phil!
In other news, Elsbury dislocated his shoulder. Oof. That stinks. I’m firmly in the camp of beat them, but don’t revel in injuries. Elsbury is an exciting player, too. One of their best. Just based on the recap & still picture, it immediately reminded me of that freak play with Jeter & the crappy BUC up in Toronto years ago.
That’s gotta drop their expected record roughly even with the Rays right there (coupled with the teams respective starts to the season).
I’m firmly in the camp of eff the lot of them.
Though Ellsbury falls in the category of non-douche in a douch-ridden douche house. The exception that proves the rule. So I feel bad for him personally. He seems like a decent guy and conducts himself well. He’s the anti-Pedrioa.
I think Hughes is going to have a good game, by which I mean he’s going to go 6 on about 250 pitches.
[4] That’s ridiculous.
250 pitches to get through 6 batters is a lot of foul balls, even for Phil.
I can’t watch this game because selling the rights to every game starting after 1 PM was a good idea to MLB. fucking bullshit.
I’m new here. Wtf does “TAFKAAR#4” mean?
[7] The Artist Formerly Known…
The Argument For Keeping Around Alex Rodriguez, batting 4th.
[6] Snuggles, the game shouldn’t be blacked out as the Saturday rule is games that start after 1:10PM ET and before 8:00PM ET. Today’s scheduled CJ Wilson perfecto starts at 1:05PM ET. Should be watchable via MLB(dot)tv.
But I’ll know for sure in 10 to 15 minutes.

[10] Ah, it’s on FOX, which is showing the Rangers v. Minnesota game in Texas (obviously) black out restrictions really need to be reworked.
[11] Oh, so then they go outside of their actual blackout rules and blackout more games, GREAT!
Farns you, FOX!
They should only be granted a national blackout if the outlet they sold it to broadcasts is nationally.
Motherfarnsers.
Edit: But they’re showing it here on the west coast. Yay FOX !!
Trying to avoid listening to Sterling/Suzin but finding alternative streaming methods since the one I paid for won’t let me watch the game.

I’m shocked that Wilson is both on the Angels and in fact 31 years old.
Go Yankees!!!!!
[13] I have no problem with a blackout as long as I have a way to actually watch the game, if they want to blackout mlb.tv go ahead, I can watch it on a TV somewhere, but it’s ridiculous when there are actually no options for me to catch the game outside of flying to a place that has chosen to air the NYY v. LAA.
[15] Teddy, it’s on Fox in PDX. Where’d you go to ?
And problem solved. Thank you internetz. Oh, but Joe Buck is calling the game.
/Andino face
[18] mlb.tv is blacked out because it’s one of the FOX games.
[18] In Vantucky, but we don’t have cable and OTA doesn’t bring in the FOX.
Granderson !
Hughes looking pretty good, except for the too-many pitches thing.
0-2 count. Here comes a bunch of balls and fouls.
Hughes looking pretty good, except for the too-many pitches thing. Hmm, and the pitching up out of the zone thing.
Death, thy name is Hughes getting ahead of the batter.
Did Pujols just get booed?
His curveball is not good anymore. His cutter and changeup are better right now
No, Buck, They’re saying “Poooooooh….” not booing him.
[28] his cutter is not good.
Nuñez instead of Gardner is the worst move ever
[31] Gardner is out sick.
Buck doing some excellent ball-washing on Scioschias.
Hughes!
Oh, no. 0-2….
Bohica. Optimism !!!!
Huughes!
At this pace, Hughes could go 10 full innings before reaching his 250 pitch count.
Where was that K pitch? I missed it.

Anyone know how to get mlb audio to work on a cell phone? I bought the gameday audio thing last year to listen on the go through the browser (which they billed me for automatically in 2012), and it seems like mlb has done a “good” job redirecting mobile browsers to buy the android/iphone app.
Two consecutive SWINGING strikeouts.
[38] High heat.
That Jeter hit brought to you by the Fried Chicken I’m eating for 2nd breakfast.
Congrats to CJ Wilson on his first career victory against the Yankees!
Also, I think Buck/Carver want to date CJ.
[39] You call someone who’s watching the game at home and have them put the phone down by the speaker.
[39] If you subscription auto renewed, the apps are free this year. Built into the cost of the subscriptions. At least that’s what it told me when I purchased the tv one.
[41] I dub Hughes “High Heat Hughes” until he sucks (next inning).
So far, this is an excellent way to capitalize on 2 on, no one out.
Fox apparently just shifted everyone getting the Cards game to this one, due to a rain delay in St.L.
wait so FOX has 3 games today…
[47] huzzah.
Huuughes!
that change is money for Hughes
Hughes gets the K after walking Calaspo - robots…
3 consecutive swinging strike-outs.
Who is this and what have they done with Phil Hughes and how can we keep him from returning?
That’s our boy.
DNYS.
blah.
Can’t blame Hughes for allowing a pop-up.
tough break for Hughes there.
Hughes’ curveball hangs everytime he throws it
“Only in Yankee stadium…”
Yes, our own Pesky pole.
Douche.
Huuuughes!
I’m choosing to ignore the HR.
46 pitches for Hughes is the only thing I don’t like about him so far
I’m choosing to ignore the 2-run, game winning HR.
FTFY
CJ scared of Babe Martin.
Martin can’t swing on 3-0
Make ‘em pay, Nooney. Make them pay.
It isn’t Scully that makes you and Tim look like hacks, Buck. The object in the mirror is much closer than you think.
Oh Buck, you don’t need to compare yourself to another announcer to look like a hack.
Buck couldnt be happier with this Angels lead.
[67]
Very nice work.
Hughes being Hughes. He just sucks.
If Burnett was pitching like this we’d be all over him. What I hear is an inefficient pitcher giving up runs. I know this was endlessly discussed, but I forget—does Hughes have options?
So, in today’s narrative, we’ve established that velocity is not Hughes’ problem.
But we’re still on pitch counts, control, secondary pitches, and executing your plan of not serving up grapefruits for dangerous hitters.
I like to call this a hughesplosion.
Hughes is bullpen bound when Pettitte and Piñata come back
[75] Seems like it. At least he’s great in the BP.
I see a bunch of positives for Hughes so far. He’s hitting that inside strike to righties fairly well.
Hughes’ stuff is better than last year. It’s too early to write him off, but I have less hope each time I see him pitch
[72] After 5 years at the ML level, I think we have to give up on the idea that Hughes hasn’t been given a fair chance. Yeah, he’s been a victim of injuries, but we’re seeing why it isn’t such an aggregious thing to view him as a good pitcher with better prospects as a reliever than a starter. Starters have to be efficient, consistent, and have reliable control and secondary pitches. He doesn’t have those.
I was going to ask how long til BattleCat takes Fuse spot in the rotation, but Phelps will likely be taking it first.
[77] same as his last start. He’s still thrown 68 pitches through 3 innings. The Ks are nice, but he has to get through batters in less than 5 pitches every once in a while.
CJ Wilson was the best contract in the offseason by far
I guess the question is Hughes so inconsistent that he will steadily maintain a terrible hit rate alongside a great K rate?
If Burnett was pitching like this we’d be all over him. What I hear is an inefficient pitcher giving up runs.
THIS. I would be completely fine with moving Fuse to the BP and getting dominate BP Fuse back while moving Phelps to the rotation for a couple starts to see what he can do until BattleCat is ready.

Hughes has great stuff today. Been a bit unlucky. If he throws like this consistently, he’ll have a very good year. Some well placed bingles, a 315 foot homer, a double to Pujols. No shame there.
EVERY player wearing 42 in mandatory fashion seems like waayyy less of a tribute than certain players (like say Cano) choosing to do it on that day. Did Jackie Robinson really pave the wave for Kevin Gregg?
[85] I agree, but he still has to be more efficient with his pitches in order to pitch 6 or 7 innings consistently.
[85] The point being argued is that even when he has great stuff as a starter, he is still amazingly inefficient and gives up runs.
If this is Hughes with great stuff, how many runs will he give up when he is off his game?
walking batter from 0-2 is endlessly frustrating.
[85] I’m not watching so you know better than me. But I feel like every time we talk about Hughes it’s “Yes, but…”
I love that cutter
As frustrating as the walk was after an 0-2 count, that was a nice backwards K.
[90] It’s not the case that every time we talk about Hughes we’re saying, “He’s got excellent stuff today”.
Phil has 2.4 WAR in the last two seasons. Jeff Karstens has 3.9.
Gold Glove !
Tex is the worst player in baseball right now. That’s a play he should make
Hughes had some velo - not his old velo, not 95-96, but 93-94 (where to tops out, of course, not avg) in the 1st two innings. Not in this one. Have to check the previous one.
But he’s being more aggressive. It looks like a different approach, and I think it’s promising. He may build up some velo and he may recover some of his curve. (Or not, of course).
Ugh.
If the Yankees weren’t trying to win the division, Hughes might get a longer leash, but if he doesn’t put everything together by the end of this month at least once, he’s the obvious candidate to be turfed to the BP. He clearly has the requisite tools to start but hasn’t shown the ability to utilize them well in the starter’s role.
Ok, he sucks.
