Oh Dear Lord, another Jeff Mathis sighting…

The odds of the worst team in baseball history winning four games in a row are about 0.028%.  Their odds of winning five in a row would be about 0.004%.  Those are roughly the same as the odds that Harry “Phil” Colliflower will not give up a HR in a game.

That’s effectively the same thing as zero, so there’s really no way to imagine a Spiders win today.  Seriously, I’d be shocked if the Spiders won another game over the rest of the season.

If they keep up this win streak, when do we have to start questioning the assumption that the Spiders are a true talent .129 team?

TWN still on pace for 79 wins. If it holds this would be the first time either Yanks or Sox finish below .500 since ‘97, when the Beaneaters went 78-84.

That team featured the pitching/comedy stylings of Steve Avery and his 6.42 ERA in 18 starts. Also 22 starts from Jeff Suppan (5.69), 33 from Aaron Sele (5.38), 8 from Chris Hammond (5.92) 6 from Vaughn Eshelman (6.33) and 6 from Bret Saberhagen (6.58).

I don’t think Lave Cross totally understands how to construct a lineup but maybe Sporty McCallister can keep the hits coming.

edit: looks like I got him confused for Louis Sockalexis.

Harry Colliflower is up there with Ugly Johnny Dickshot

[2] But Selig will remind us that that was in the heart of the steroid era (which he was the one to solve!) and everyone’s ERA was 5+. When the playing field was leveled and EVERYONE was clean, TWN started winning titles.

If this season finishes the way it’s headed, an investigation will clearly be needed to see what teams are cheating TWN out of their mandated playoff spot.

I had a dream I was in Hell. I was in Comerica Park seated next to Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. Phil was pitching to a never-ending lineup of Miggy Cabrera’s. Somehow the bases were always loaded and the count never changed from 3-1. Sounds kinda familiar actually.

[6] Your nightmare is about to get worse, as secret agent implanted by TWN, Derek Lowe, is about to be in the BP.

I really hope Moises Sierra is related to Ruben.

not a home run!

Is it me, or is Nix one of the few utility guys who might actually be average or better at several of the positions he plays? He seems to pass the eye test on the infield positions.

[9] Hughes tried to give up the bomb, but EE hit it TOO hard.

Edit - be was determined to allow that first inning run…

Hughes has graduated from 0-2 hits to two out rallies.

I thought it was 0-2 walks?

good point, walks and home runs.

Michael Kay has a funny definition of a line drive.

[10] by UZR (which doesn’t mean much, it’s also a really small sample), Nix is above average at second, a little below average at third and good in the outfield.  SS numbers are horrible but the sample is really really small.

btw, who else is 90% sure this is going to be a 2-0 game (Phil still needs to give up his HR)?

This game would have a lot more runs if this stadium were a disgrace.

an 0-2 strikeout, weird.

Nice changeup to get the final out of the 3rd.

Calling Dr. Andrews. . .Dr. Andrews to the blue and white pinstriped phone

This has to be a joke. Happ has faced the minimum 12 batters through 4

Andruw Jones is a joke

MATHIS IS A YANKEE KILLER

Its Sunday, we’ve won the series, we’re over the hump of sucking and our next two opponents are quite weak.. Why not take the game off?

Cone has been quite annoying in the booth recently. He’s good in limited duty but appears to be getting exposed.

EDIT: Sorta like Phil Hughes.

This team will not win the division

Send Hughes down to rookie ball.  He can’t get out the Dunedin Jays.

Phil Hughes can’t fool Toronto’s triple-A all-stars.

[28] Can’t agree with you, he is the best in the booth by far

There’s the home run.

[33] Now they can pull him.

With CC and Andy out and Hughes are Nova being mediocre, this team has one good starter in Kuroda and that’s it.

How do you give up seven runs to this lineup?

Don’t worry, we get to watch Phelps become terrible and then we can blame Girardi for not stretching him out when he knew Sabathia might need a rest.

[37] He’ll be terrible and then go down with an arm injury, due to being moved back and forth from starter to reliever.

Kurtis looks horrible

Sure, now that the game is out of reach score a run…

If this team were going to the playoffs—which it isn’t—at least Hughes and Nova could be Kenny Rogersed in the postseason assuming a healthy CC and Pettitte. Which they won’t be attending. But if they were, it’d be OK.

Yay, no more Hughes.

Can we not just forfeit this game?

I never trusted old Harry Cauliflower ears

[43] I believe the pitcher they just brought in is their version of forfeiting. Also, signing Derek Lowe is their version of forfeiting the season.

Jeter taking over the stat padder role.

This game ends 10-9. Book it.

Nix with his second nice play at 2B. Probably time to sell Nun-E’s elbows on the open market.

46 - Maybe, but his year might be my favorite part of this season. And maybe he can go out on a bang?

[50] If by bang, you mean hanging on one season too long (2013), then absolutely.

Sigh…great play by Davis.

Wish the Yanks had a left fielder like that…

Should have been 10-6 right there. Now they have to work extra hard to get to 10-9.

The sad thing is that when it ends 10-9, we’ll know it would have been 11-10 spiders.

[53] I’m voting for 13-11.

Imagine if they had shown up earlier than the seventh.

This is the CT at it’s absolute finest!

imagine if hughes wasn’t the worst pitcher in baseball!

imagine if we weren’t rooting for the cleveland spiders!

Is Fredo our 2nd most reliable pitcher now

Imagine all the pitchers…...  who don’t suck.

The only thing that will kill me about this loss is if Tampa Bay wins and the Yankees go into the week with just a 5 game lead after winning four of five games.

However, Baltimore and Tampa Bay had some shitty opponents and Baltimore, in particular, is about to see its schedule get a lot harder. Tampa Bay is the trickier one.

Six of Tampa Bay’s next 10 games come against Seattle and Kansas City. Annoying!

Tampa Bay does have to face King Felix, at least.

[64] Funny though.  If 6 of the Spiders’ next ten games were against Seattle and Kansas City, I would be very worried.

So naturally, Tampa Bay is about to win. Awesome.

Three against Texas while Tampa Bay plays three against Seattle. Not good.

Missed the game, but looking at gameday, it strikes me there was a coach visit to the mound in the 4th. If they took him out at that point, having given up 5 runs thus far, and 4 in the inning, instead of leaving him in to not only shit the bed but grind it in, this is a tie in regulation and who knows.

Going to Igarashi wasn’t the white flag. Leaving Fuse in was the give-up decision.

Sigh. Spiders had a good run, didn’t they. Alas, all good things much come to an end.

But bad things can linger for a long long time.

[70] That describes the bulk of Hughes career.

Let’s all relax. They’re going to the postseason.

Relax? How do you spell that?
